    Introduction

    This report contains information on the quality of cotton on hand in the United States on August

    1, 1961, and on the quality of cotton in the crop, supply, and disappearance during the 1960-61

    season. To facilitate comparison certain data for previous years are included.

    Quality estimates for the carry-over include statistics on the grade and staple of upland and

    American-Egyptian cotton and on the staple of cotton of foreign growth in the United States on

    August 1, 1961. Estimates on the quality of cotton in the 1961 carry-over are based on actual

    re-sampling and classification of a representative proportion of the cotton stored in mills and in public storage, including CCC stocks. Sample data were compiled for each State and for the

    principal types of storage and were raised to the total number of bales in the carry-over as

    reported by the Bureau of the Census for upland, American-Egyptian and foreign growths.

    Data on the crop, supply and disappearance of upland cotton by qualities for the 1960-61 season,

    and comparative data for preceding years are also included in this report.

    Upland cotton in the United States carry-over on August 1, 1961 contained the smallest proportion

    of Middling and higher White grades in end-season stocks since 1958. The proportion of Strict

    Low Middling and lower White grades was the smallest since 1953. Light Spotted cotton accounted for a much larger proportion of the total carry-over than in either of the two preceding years. In terms of "grade cotton in the 1961 carry-over was down slightly from that of a year

    earlier but was well above the grade index for the 1960-61 upland supply. This is the third successive year in which the grade index for end-season stocks was higher than that of the 55fl5

    supply.

    Nearly 80 percent of the Upland carry-over on August 1, 1961 was in the lengths 1-1/32" through 1-3/32". This is the largest proportion of these lengths in end-season stocks on record. Cotton

    stapling 1-1/16" accounted for 40 percent of the upland cotton in the 1961 carry-over. Cotton shorter than one inch comprised less than nine percent of the total, the smallest proportion of

    these lengths on record. The average staple length of upland cotton in the 1961 carry-over was the second longest on record.

    American-Egyptian cotton on hand in the United States on August 1, 1961 averaged somewhat' lower

    in grade than a year earlier. End-season stocks of this cotton contained proportionately more

    1-7/16" and longer staples than a year ago.

    Cotton tenderable in settlement of futures in the 1961 carry-over totaled about 6,499,000 bales,

    equivalent to 92 percent of the total. This is based on the quantity of cotton tenderable with

    respect to grade and staple only, and does not take Into consideration cotton reduced for cause

    nor cotton below minimum micronaire requirements.

    The United States carry-over of all kinds of cotton totaled 7, 164,000 bales on August 1, 1961, according to the Bureau of the Census. This 'compares with 7,560,000 bales a year earlier and 8,885,000 two years ago. Stocks of upland cotton in the 1961 carry-over totaled 7,017,000 bales, American-Egyptian stocks were about 107,000 bales, and foreign growths totaled about 40,000 bales.
