NEW IRS RULING ENCOURAGES CONTINUING EDUCATION - A new ruling by the Internal Revenue Service states that expenditures incurred by an individual for education to maintain or improve skills which are required by his present employer as a condition of reten-tion are deductible regardless of whether or not a degree is involved. This permits deductions for refresher courses as well as academic and vocational courses and includes travel expenses necessary to obtain this education.

4 PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER A. F. S. FEBRUARY, 19

We are very sorry to announce the death of MR. ROBERT "BOB" ANSON, who was for many years connected with the Steel Foundries and was a member of the A.F.S. Mr. Anson died on October 24, 1967.

THE CHESTER V. NASS

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Friends and Family, along with the Trustees of the

Foundry Educational Foundation, have established the

Chester V. Nass Scholarship Program to provide a lasting

memorial to Mr. Nass, eleventh president of the FEF. Mr.

Nass died in Oak Park, Illinois, on August 17, 1967. The

Award will assist and encourage capable and deserving stu -

dents interested in careers in the cast metals industry. At

the suggestion of Mrs. Nass, voluntary contributions were

made to the FEF by many of his friends and bUSIneSS

associates. These funds, along with subsequent contributions

made for this purpose will be held by the Foundation in a

separate endowment account. Earnings will he used each

year to provide a scholarship award in the amount of $500.

The C. V. Nass Scholarship will he awarded each year

at the Annual Meeting of the Foundation to the FEF regis-

trant judged to be the most distinguished student enrolled

in the FEF program in that school year. Selection will he

made by the FEF's Board of Awards on the basis or recoin-

mendations from each professor in charge of the cast metals

program at SChOOlS affiliated with the Foundation. The

Board of Awards will also consider each candidate's

academic performance, extracurricular achievements, and

summer or co-op employment record.

An appropriate citation will he presented along with the $500.00 cash award.

Beginning in September 1968, our monthly meetings

will be held in the Sheraton-Penn Pike Motor Inn, at the

Fort Washington Interchange of the Pa. Turnpike. For

many of our members this location should he a more readily

accessible meeting place, and we will enjoy free, ample

4 PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER A. F. S. MARCH, 1968

We are very sorry to announce the recent death of GEORGE F. PETTINOS JR., Pres., Geo. F. Pet-tinos Inc., Bala-Cynwyd, Pa., and THEODORE SCHWERTZLER, recently retired from Dodge Steel Co., Phila., Pa.

For the convenience of our members and non-members alike, we respectfully request the return of the DINNER RESERVATION CARDS for our monthly meetings, list-ing the number of persons planning to attend. At the February meeting, we had 65 reservations but served 88 dinners and this caused some delay. Please therefore mail in your reservation cards as soon as possible, so that we can better serve you.

It was recently announced that the PALMYRA FOUND-RY CO., Palmyra, N. J., has placed into operation a 600 KW, 15 ton Electric Induction Furnace, which replaces their cupola operation that has been in existence since the plant's founding in 1920. The 15 ton Furnace will be supplemented by a 5000 lb. Corless Furnace eliminat-ing the cupola as a stand-by unit. Special metal require-ments will be available from the use of this equipment. The company has also added larger laboratory facilities.

The CONESTOGA FOUNDRYMEN'S ASSOCIATION and READING FOUNDRYMEN'S ASSOCIATION are hav-ing a joint meeting on March 20th, at Overlook Country Club, Lancaster, Pa., a talk on "Preventive Maintenance" will be given by Mr. R. C. Howell, Chief Works Engr., American Steel Foundries, Chicago, Ill. The Technical Chairman for the talk will be Mr. Charles Locke, Donegal Steel Foundry Co., Marietta, Pa.

The METROPOLITAN BRASS FOUNDER'S ASSOC., has announced a "Mulling, Molding and Control of Sand" Seminar, to be held March 6-8, at the Military Park Hotel, Newark, New Jersey. Mixing, molding and control of sands will be emphasized. Mold wall movement, hot deformation, hot properties, creep, mold atmosphere, heat transfer are studied in relation to molding and casting quality. Students bring "case problems" to class for discussion. For molding foremen, technicians and supervisors responsible for sand testing, mixing and control.

Beginning in September 1968, our monthly meetings will be held in the Sheraton-Penn Pike Motor Inn, at the Fort Washington Interchange of the Pa. Turnpike. For many of our members this location should be a more readily accessible meeting place, and we will enjoy free, ample parking. Please make a note of this important change for the future!!

Our ANNUAL GOLF OUTING, PICNIC & DINNER, again will be held at the Warrington Country Club, on Friday, June 21, 1968 and is but a few short months away. Members of course, will be given preference.

The sale of all Picnic Tickets will be made in advance and therefore no tickets will be sold nor exchanged at the Club.
