THE CRUSADERS OF MOELLER HIGH SCHOOL
PROUDLY PRESENT THIS BOOKLET ON THE
OCCASION OF THE DEDICATION OF OUR SCHOOL
opt "It® ett ^t^t^ct*-
Dear Brother Lawrence:
On the happy occasion of the dedication of Moeller High School, I offer my greetings and my blessing to you and all the members of the Faculty, to the students, and to the friends of the school.
We humbly dedicate this beautiful new building, and all that w i l l be accomplished within its walls throughout the years, to the greater glory of God. We pray that this school wi l l ever be an effective instrument in preparing our young men to be good citizens of this land we love, and fellow citizens •with the saints in the kingdom of heaven.
Moeller High School w i l l be a living tribute to a revered former Archbishop of Cincinnati, who pioneered in the development of our high school system. I t w i l l also testify to the apostolic spirit of the Society of Mary, which has committed itself to serve here the Christian education of our youth. And i t w i l l memorialize the magnificent response of the Catholic people of Cincinnati to the Archbishop's High School Fund Campaign which made this institution possible.
May the Lord, in the words of the liturgy, visit this building! May His angels dwell here, to guard in peace all who assemble, teach, and study here, and may His blessing be always upon themI
HIS GRACE T H E MOST REVEREND KARL J. ALTER, D.D., L .L .D.
Faithfully yours in Christ,
Archbishop of Cincinnati
VERY R E V E R E N D FATHER WILLIAM F E R R E E , S.M. Second Assistant to the Superior General Society of Mary
We are privileged to have one of the major superiors of the Society of Mary in attendance at
the dedication of Moeller High School. Very Rev. Will iam Ferree, S.M. is the second assistant of the
Superior General and directs the Office of Instruction in the Marianist Society from its headquarters
in Rome, Italy. A past president of the University of Puerto Rico and former director of the Marianist
College at Mount St. John in Dayton, Ohio, Fr. Ferree is responsible for the guidance and direction of all
Marianist teachers and administrators throughout the world. Father is presently engaged in a tour of
all the Marianist schools in the United States as the personal representative of the Superior General,
the Very Rev. Paul Joseph Hoffer, S.M.
VERY REVEREND JAMES M. DARBY, S.M. Provincial Superior of the
Cincinnati Province Society of Mary
My dear Friends:
Sincerest congratulations on the dedication of this beautiful new facility for the education of our CathoHc youth here in Cincinnati, Moeller High School. Surely it stands as a testimony of your generosity and charity no less than your sense of responsibility to the Church, present and future.
We Marianists are very grateful and deeply pleased to have been chosen to conduct the school for your sons. We have striven to serve the Church devotedly and effectively in the Queen City for the past one hundred and twelve years. A good number of our religious are native Cincinnatians. I n a very real sense our roots are here.
May God bless all of us in this great new undertaking and may Our Lady guide us on the paths of truth and justice.
Respectfully yours in J. M . J.
Very Rev. James M . Darby, S.M. Provincial of the Marianists
PLANNING Moeller High School, as an intangible idea, had its beginnings back in the fall of 1958 when
Monsignor Edward A. McCarthy and Bro. Paul Sibbing, S.M., were appointed to supervise the planning
and construction of the building. Through their efforts our new school, destined to serve fifteen
parishes in the northeastern part of the city, began to rise on an eleven acre site just fifteen miles
from the center of Cincinnati.
The building stands now, the sum of all its parts; parts which grew on the architect's drawing
board, parts which grew with the turn of earth before the bulldozer's blade, parts which grew with the
sweep of the plasterer's trowel, parts which grew w i th the carpenter's hammer, and most important, be
fore these could exist, parts which grew from the hearts of the people of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati
called upon to build this monument to Catholic Education.

A D M I The Society of Mary is happy to be entrusted w i t h the care and direction of Moeller High
School by His Grace, the Most Reverend Karl J. Alter, Archbishop of Cincinnati. After more than 110 years of participation in Catholic educational endeavors in the city of Cincinnati - over thirty of which were exclusively devoted to high school work - we feel that our preparation and experience in this field w i l l result in more efficient use of this school and more solid scholastic achievement.
Our thanks go to all those Catholics of the Cincinnati area whose unstinted contributions made the building of Moeller High possible. Particularly are we grateful to the parents of our first students who have uncomplainingly shouldered the burden of making the school more and more complete in its material resources. Also we wish to pay tribute to our first students, those pioneer Crusaders, who have shown respect and care for this great gift of the Catholics of the diocese, and have striven might and main toward the four-fold aim of CathoHc education - spiritual, intellectual, cultural, and physical development. May they continue to seek these higher values under the guidance and inspiration of the Blessed Virgin, our Mother.
May future generations of Crusaders continue to show their appreciation for the sacrifice of their forbears by foUov^ing the example of the first students of Moeller; and may every Crusader always remain aware of the privilege of bearing the name of the founder of the diocesan high school system in Cincinnati - Archbishop Henry Moeller (1910-1925).

FACULTY Six members of the Society of Mary and two Catholic laymen constitute the present faculty
of Moeller High School. Dedicated to the christian training of youth, these Catholic educators strive
each day to develop the talents and abilities of their charges. They never forget that moral,
intellectual, physical and social advancement go to make up the "whole man."
I t is wi th this thought in mind that each member of the Moeller faculty tries, under the
inspiration of a fil ial devotedness to Mary, to develop in himself and in others the fullness of Christian
life while engaged in the various occupations of the ordinary day.
I t is, therefore, the sincere desire of the faculty that all future graduates of Moeller High
School, grounded on the solid foundation of correct moral principles, schooled in self-discipline, invig
orated by the consciousness of a healthy, progressive spiritual life within them, can assume the burden
of guiding their own world through a peaceful and happy life to a blissful eternity wi th God.

Bicentennial
of
Father William Joseph
Chaminade
Founder
of the
Society of
Mary
1 7 6 1 - 1 9 6 1
On the eight of A p r i l , 1961, the Society of Mary celebrated the bicentennial anniversary of the b i r th of its founder, Fr. W i l l i a m Joseph Chaminade. Fr. Chaminade was b o m in Perigueux, a small town of France about sixty miles northeast of Bordeaux. Inspired by pious parents, the future priest learned to lean heavily on the protection of Mary. Dur ing his schooldays at the College of Mussidan she had miraculously cured his right foot which had been crushed in an accident in a stone quarry. I n later years she protected her chosen apostle from the guillotine of war-torn France and inspired h im to found two religious societies, the Daughters of Mary Immaculate and the Society of Mary.
To appreciate the life and work of Fr. Chaminade i t is necessary to understand the times in which he labored. I n 1791 France was in an upheaval. The terrors of the persecution began to spread throughout the country, and al l priests were forbidden to exercise their ministry, under pain of death. Every day for the ten months of the Terror
of Bordeaux, Fr. Chaminade, under various disgiiises, faced the gravest dangers. His life of alarms and uncertainty continued to last for more than three years during which time twenty of the forty priests i n Bordeaux met death by the guillotine.
D u r i n g a short l u l l i n the revolution, Fr. Chaminade moved to the center of the city and openly began work among the young. However, he was soon summoned by the authorities and served w i t h a passport to Spain. Providence led h im to the city of Saragossa where there is a national shrine of Our Lady of the Pillar. I t was here that the august Virg in inspired the exiled priest w i t h a plan of apostolate. I t was here that Fr. Chaminade waited for three years unt i l Bonaparte assumed control in France and he could return to his beloved Bordeaux.
By 1800, thousands of young men and women in Bordeaux came under the direction of Fr. Chaminade as he organized the sodality and began training apostles in the fundamentals of mult ip ly ing christians. I n a few years
these activities were so f ru i t fu l that Cardinal Donnet could justly say that " i f any work of piety or charity were traced to its origin the name of Fr. Chaminade would be found at its source."
Not content w i t h making Mary loved through his personal efforts, Fr. Chaminade embodied his ideal to propagate the name of Mary when he founded the Daughters of Mary in 1816 and the Society of Mary in the fol lowing year. After a life of eighty-nine years, Fr .
Chaminade passed to his reward on January 22, 1850, leaving behind h im a trai l of shining achievements.
I n 1817 one man offered himself to Fr. Chaminade. I n 1961 there are: 2,956 Marianist Brothers and priests; 165 Marianist houses; 77,538 students in Marianist primary schools, high schools, and universities; 10 provinces working in 21 nations. Thus i t is that there extends down to our own day the spirit of Father Chaminade, founder of the Marianists.

1849 - 1925
It is a generally conceded fact that Archbishop Henry Moeller was one of the outstanding figures in the Hierarchy of the United States. His prudence of judgment and counsel were sought by all. His learning and wisdom were attested to, while his piety and sanctity could never be questioned.
Endowed naturally with great intellectual capabilities, it was by close application to study that the revered Archbishop, a native of Cincinnati, brought upon himself the great honors he merited at the North American College in Rome. Winning the highest honors in the history of this great university, he carried off the first three prizes in theology, was awarded the gold medal for excellence and given the degree of doctor of divinity. This achievement of learning he carried through life; he appreciated the great
depth of wisdom and knowledge hidden in the mysteries of our religion, and the more he studied and meditated, the more did he value the great gift of our faith.
Coupled, however, with his great learning was a solid and deep-rooted piety. This was evidenced in a great measure when he stood at the altar offering the Holy Sacrifice. His very attitude was a silent and unobtrusive revelation to all, that there in truest reality stood the anointed of the Lord , a priest of God, one whose life revealed His very presence, to an extent that his whole being seemed permeated with a heavenly atmosphere.
Not withstanding his great cares, he showed almost a super-human kindness and angeHc patience. No tale was too long and no task too great, for he was a good hstener, a willing helper, a true friend, and a prudent adviser. F i r m in his laws and decisions, yet he seasoned his determination with kind consideration for the weakness of human nature.
Great indeed in every sense of the word was the Most Rev. Henry Moeller. May the students who enter the halls of this building, dedicated in his honor, find in Archbishop Moeller a model and guide to intellectual achievement. May he lead them to become true Sons of God and Our Blessed Lady , an inspiration to their fellow men, and apostolic Crusaders of Moeller High School.

1 - A With the guidance and hard work of
Bro. Binder, 1-A has been very spirited and successful in the past year. Winners of the Marianist Drive and the Clothing Drive, the members of 1-A set out to do their share in every drive sponsored by the school. They placed four boys on the has ketball team, twelve more on the footbal' squad, and they won the intramural basket ball title with an 8-1 record. They had rep resentatives in the sodality, the glee club the service club, and the tennis team; sev eral members were always on the honor roll, The record speaks for itself; 1-A can be justly proud of the accomphshments of the first year at Moeller.
Bro. Binder shows his students the art project for the day.
I B All must concentrate as Mr. Daily conducts a lesson in his Guided Reading class.
Sparked by the efforts of Mr. Daily, 1-B can boast of a long list of achievements to support the claim of being the best homeroom in the school. As many as sixteen members of this class have merited scholastic distinction on the Honor R o l l . I n addition, the class has more representatives on the football team and in the glee club than any other homeroom. Three boys of 1-B are Sodality captains, and seven others are hsted on the tennis team. In the various drives 1-B can point to a first place finish in the Ad Drive, a tie for first in a 50-50 Drive, second place in the Book Drive, and top positions in all other drives. 1-B salutes the other homerooms but claims to be the most spirited homeroom at MoUer High School.

THE SODALITY PROMOTES:
LEADERSHIP — Dan Niehaus, Dennis Cronin, John Haverkamp, Mike Rice, and John Rivers present their views to the sodalists at a Study Day attended by students from Purcell, Hamilton Catholic, St. Xavier, and Moeller.
SPIRITUALITY - Through the efforts of the sodahsts, the students of Moeller are encouraged to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
LOVE OF GOD - Marianist Sodalists realize the necessity of frequent reception of the Sacraments.
Mr. Faust tells his students how to make their first million. Could it really be that easy$$$$ I - C
1-C has been a top challenger in all of the drives sponsored by Moeller High School. Under the able guidance of Mr. Faust, the members of this class have made excellent showings in the Book Drive, the A d Drive, the Bishop's Rehef Fund, 50-50 Drives and the Clothing Drive. The students of 1-C are especially proud to have seven representatives in the SodaHty, two on the basketball team, six on the football team, seven in the Service Club and others in every major activity of the school. Scho-lastically, several members of this group are tops. Everyone in 1-C feels that he belongs to the best homeroom in Moeller High School.

I - D This homeroom has comphed more rec
ord highs in drives, raffles, and other activities than any other homeroom. This is the feeling of the members of 1-D. Let's look at the record. I n the second 50-50 Drive, 1-D established an all-time high with almost two hundred dollars worth of tickets sold. First place in the Bishop's Relief F u n d goes to this class, and a fine contribution was made to the l i b r a r y in the Book D r i v e . These boys are known likewise for their scholastic, spiritual , and athletic accomplishments. They are credited with fifteen lonor r o l l students, seventeen sodality
members, and three basketball players. The drive and determination of Bro. Keyes has been a big factor in the winning ways of this class. Never, under his supervision, has the class come in last. A great achievement for his class and Moeller High School.
A bird can be a complicated animal. R. Osner with the help of Bro. Keyes explains the various parts to his classmates.
More books for the Moeller Library. Jerry Flaig picks up his stack of books under the watchful eyes of his amused companions.
BOOK DRIVE SHOWS SCHOOL SPIRIT Jerry Flaig and Bill Taphom survey some of the 8000 books collected by the Moeller students from their relatives, neighbors, and friends.
Fr. Middendorf explains a fine point in Latin to Don Bohn and his fellow Roman scholars.
When school first started, it was Fr. Middendorf who first gave this class the title, the Great 1-E. In their efforts to live up to that title the members of his class captured the first drive of the school by bringing in an overwhelming nxraiber of books to fill the shelves of the Moeller Librar)'. They then turned their attention to the 50-50 drives and can now be credited with five wins in these drives. The homeroom consists of thirty-eight pupils with plenty of school spirit and the desire to help make Moeller High School the best in the area.

FUTURE
Though hampered by injuries and other difficulties, Moeller's first basketball team had a very successful season under the expert direction of Mr. William Daily. The Crusaders, like most basketball teams, had their good games and also their poor ones. A couple of their victories deserve special mention.
Perhaps the best game of the season was a 42-40 victory over highly rated Norwood. Another f i n e g a m e was the v i c t o r y over powerful Roger Bacon. Playing host in this G . C . L . league game, the Crusaders played a possession-tj'pe game taking only the best shots to defeat the Spartans by the slim margin of 17-15. Crusader fans can look forward to some exciting games and Moeller's first championship in the very near future.
Whether right or left, Denny Buchert get his share of important points.
STARS
Under the driving force of Mr. Faust, the fighting Crusaders compiled a respectable 4-4 record in their first season on the gridiron. The spirit and determination exhibited by the team throughout the season should indicate the beginning of a long history of football supremacy.

Another substantial gain for the Crusaders against Purcell.
A clipping penalty brings more yardage for the surging Crusaders.
The Knights of Columbus escort Archbishop Alter in the procession to the auditoriiun.
His Grace leaves the auditoritun to bless the exterior of the school.
After blessing the exterior of the school. Archbishop Alter starts to return to the auditorium for the final part of the program.
