The Story of

THE WHITE HORSE INN

The celebrated" White Horse Inn," overlooking one of the many lovely lakesin the Austrian Tyrol, is bathed in the sunshine of a radiant summer's morning.Visitors from England are expected to arrive by the lake steamer, and pretty JosephaVogelhuber, proprietress of the Inn, is giving last-minute instructions to Leopold,her head waiter, who professes a deep but apparently hopeless passion for hismistress.

Shortly after, the lake steamer arrives at the landing-stage and discharges itscargo of sightseers and guests, prominent among whom are John Ebenezer Grinkle,a:self-made manufacturer, and his daughter, Ottoline.

Mr. Grinkle has come to the Tyrol for a holiday against his personal inclinations,which lie in the humbler direction of Morecambe, but he proceeds to make thebest of things by taking possession of the best bedroom, from which he is swiftlyejected by order of Josepha, who has reserved the room for a young English solicitor,Valentine Sutton.

The latter, it appears, is acting for Mr. Grlnkle in a lawsuit with a rival firm ofmanufacturers, and when he meets Ottollne, it is a case of love at first sight. Inspite of this, Leopold's jealousy remains at fever-heat, and after a passage of armswith Josepha, he is dismissed from her service. His loyalty to the" White HorseInn," though suffering a temporary check, revives when he learns that the Emperoris coming to stay for the opening of the shooting season.

Elaborate preparations are made for the Imperial reception, the villagers turnout en fete and Leopold is deputed to make a speech of welcome. But his carefullyrehearsed phrases are forgotten in a sudden access of rage at seeing Josepha andSutton together, and the official reception nearly ends in disaster.

In the last act, however, the aged Emperor, in a charming little scene, givesJosepha some valuable advice regarding marrying in her proper station. Leopoldis retored to favour and his beloved mistress's arms, with a prospect of a half sharein the" White Horse Inn," while Mr. Grinkle, his business affairs brought to a satis-factory conclusion, gives his consent to Ottoline's marriage to Sutton.
