In turning the pages of the 1958 ERINNERUNGEN, the German word for “memories”

the observer will find a unique record of American youth in an unusual situation. These

young citizens far from home preserve their native customs and traditions but are also

influenced by the international atmosphere in which they live.

This tenth edition of the yearbook, which records the activities of students from fifteen

American high schools in Germany and France — whereas the first edition in

1949 recorded only seven schools — is a bridge between two continents and

two ways of life — the European and the American. Although the ERINNERUNGEN

is a composite of the different experiences of students throughout Europe, it has the

common bond of being proof that friendship and harmony between nations is

possible in today’s world.

HEADQUARTERSU.S. ARMY, EUROPE

Office of the Commander in Chief

To the 1958 high school graduateYour graduation from the High Schools of the US Army, Europe, marks a definite step in your development as young men and women, and in your maturity and acceptance of the responsibility of adultcitizenship. It is no small achievement to carry out a significant program ofwork over a period of 12 to 13 years. For most of you, this workhas been further complicated by the frequent moves associated withthe military profession. In many cases, it has been necessary foryou to become acquainted with new languages and new customswhile adjusting at the same time to more advanced studies, newteachers, and different school systems. However, here in Europeyou have had the privilege of traveling in different countries, learningEuropean history, customs and traditions first hand and at the sametime acquiring an American-type education.Of all the citizens of our nation, none accept their responsibilitiesmore fully than those whose lives are dedicated to the defense of ourcountry. You have lived constantly in an environment of devotion toduty and of service to our nation. These unusual circumstances, added to your American-type education with its emphasis on theideals of liberty and freedom, have prepared you to assume your fullshare in the responsibilities facing our country in its role of worldleadership.

Congratulations on your graduation and best wishes for success. Sincerely,

Nineteen fifty-eight is a year for celebration.

Gathering supplies for the valiant rebels;Futile, because the odds were insurmountable.

1957 . . . nearer and nearer moved the unrest and fear.Russian satellites circling the earth,Riots in the South,And concern on the face of America.

And at last, 1958 . . .Has a brighter outlook.America now has her own satellites. In this age when science is supreme,This seems a sign of greater things to come,Awaited with hope.

We of the 1958 ERINNERUNGEN staff ask youTo remember that ERINNERUNGEN hasWitnessed history in the making. As we present to you the TENTH ANNIVERSARYEDITION of our book; we hope you will recallAnd recognize how closely integrated has been the storyOf our schools and of their students,With the story of the world.

ERINNERUNGEN has completed 10 successful years —Years that formed a crucial decade in theHistory of our world.

ERINNERUNGEN has grown and improved throughThe years, by faithfully recording our personal history,As other books, elsewhere, have recorded the progressOf the world.

From out of the mists of the past come memories . . .From out of the chapters of history we bringForth scenes of great importance. To us and to our world.

1949 . . . the first ERINNERUNGEN was publishedBy seven schools. The North Atlantic Treaty was ratified,And the NATO forces came to Europe,Bringing a flood of dependents to people our high schools.

1951 . . . from the haze comes the rumble of guns; Korea! We waited amid shattered remnants of false security,Watched the hatred and chaos boil beneath the surface.

1952 . . . a pleasanter scene comes to mind.Dwight Eisenhower retired from the field of warTo assume our highest office.American school children went in buses to see and hearThe man who was to lead our country throughA precarious time, the end of which is still not in sight.

1953 . . . with the roar of rushing watersAnd the desolation of a flood-torn street,Tenacious little Holland clung to the small marginLeft her by the greedy sea.American students went all-out in their drivesFor food and clothing.

1954 . . . the end of an era, the beginning of an era;Joseph Stalin dies, and a new regime was begun; What was to come next?

1955 . . .advances in science; the U.S. launchedThe first atomic-powered submarine.Dr. Jonas Salk perfected his life-saving polio vaccine.

1956 . . .as the years draw nearer out of the mist,The image becomes clearer, and more terrible.Scant miles to the east a brave people engaged in aStruggle against the combined forces of oppression.Incensed high school students spent futile hours

1957-58 Index of School PersonnelClassifications are indicated by sr for senior, jr for junior, soph for sophomore, fr for freshman. A question mark after a nameindicates unknown grade level. “Tr in” means transferred in. “Tr out” means transferred out. Seniors who did not graduate withtheir class because they were transferred out are so marked. DNG stands for “Did Not Graduate.” Some people in this index are notnamed in the class pictures, but appear in the yearbook as members of an activity, and are so marked. Most of these peopleprobably transferred in sometime during the school year. – Archivist

The senior class of 1958 began an illustrious and worthwhile year when it met for the first time under thesponsorship of Mr. Rosin. The seniors carried out the first business of the year — initiating the freshmen—very thoroughly, as any “froshie” can testify. Class officers were elected and a bustle of activity wassoon seen around Room 212 as the seniors started their money-making program for the senior trip.

Dances were held, cakes, beanies, and stationery were sold in the common effort for the senior trip tothe World’s Fair in Brussels. The class of ’58 was well-represented in all school activities and its memberswere leaders on the sports field, in classrooms, in clubs, and in Student Council and the National HonorSociety.

The three main highlights of the senior year — the trip, the prom, and graduation — seemed to fly by.Now the members of the class of ’58 face uncertain futures. However the knowledge that they completedtwelve years of education, and at least one of these at Nürnberg High, has given them a security they willnever lose and memories they will never forget.

Kicking around at the Kickoff Dance

The junior class began their money-making year with the KickoffDance, which included junior talent and the introduction of thefootball team. During home games they sold pompons andrefreshments. The Slave Sale and the Sadie Hawkins Day danceadded to the coffers. A fifty dollar prize for selling the most activityraffle tickets boosted the balance. While struggling throughsemester exams, they sold refreshments. Refreshments, saucer -toss and cake - walk were carnival projects. Then came thehighlight of the year, the prom, under the supervision of the class’two wonderful sponsors, Mrs. Rosin and Mr. Minasian.

In the beginning were the sophomores! The sophomores arehappy to say that the year of ’58 has been a fulfilling one. After the assemblage of the mighty congregation and electionof class officers, the walk up the pathway to the garden ofseniors was started.A successful cake sale, which made possible the sophomoreValentine’s Dance, began paving the way. The sophomoreswere well represented in the school carnival with four booths. These and other activities made the way up the long andoften difficult path to graduation. Now one of the biggestturns along the way has been rounded and the last bell ofthe school year is awaited to declare the promotion to juniors.
