OUR BUSINESS IS PERFORMING RECOGNIZING THE ECONOMIC challenges being faced by Fairbanksans, the Fairbanks Concert Association made the decision to lower ticket prices and make attending a show more affordable. The results were unexpected—on average, each show’s attendance was increased by 200 individuals. Three shows—Martin Short, Manhattan Transfer, and Chick Corea & Béla Fleck—had an audience of over 1,000! Two more shows—Lunasa and Quixotic Fusion—almost hit that mark. Although the shift in ticket prices created a budget with only 37% of projected income being received from tickets sales, purchases increased for the season allowing FCA to reach a broader audience and fulfill our mission. Audience engagement led to success in a big way this season with a contest to see who would join Martin Short on stage for one of his sketches. The Fairbanks Concert Association received national attention, as the field reduced to two locals vying to share the stage with the comedic great. Through online and event-based marketing, FCA garnered 3,000 website votes to see local talent on their hometown stage. This type of audience engagement continued throughout the season resulting in active and engaged audiences. During the 2013 – 2014 season there were 13,343 performance attendees, 5,770 people reached from outreach efforts, and 4,453 through education initiatives. Overall, 13,394 people experienced a performance or event put on by the Fairbanks Concert Association. Because of this increased community engagement, the Fairbanks Concert Association is solidly established in the Fairbanks area and dependent on financial support. To achieve similar attendance and expand the audience even further, FCA looks forward to seeing increased donor participation in support of their mission. 2013- 2014 SEASON BOARDToni AbbeyCori AnthonySuzanne BishopDoug BraddockBarb HameisterCeleste HansenJeremy JohnsonPaul KrejciBill KunerthChuck LemkeSherry ModrowMike PowersNicole StewartAnnie Wenstrup

FOR THIS SEASON, the Fairbanks Concert Association experienced a lot of firsts. Going bigger, doing better, and seeing more people experience a FCA show were all part of making this season one of FCA’s best. But the significance of these firsts is in the details.

The diversity in artist choice is a part of what defines the Fairbanks Concert Association as an organization. We were pleased to see the extraordinary reception of not only our big name performers, but for artists and groups that were not as well known. Several months

after the California Guitar Trio and the Montreal Guitar Trio performed in Fairbanks, FCA is still receiving comments on their outstanding performance. Along with that outstanding performance came a first for the Guitar Trios—they sold more CDs in Fairbanks than they’ve sold in any other venue they’ve played! And a first for the Fairbanks Concert Association— a record number of CD sales during the Lunasa performance. These CD sales ensure a lasting impression of the performers on the Fairbanks community.

SHOW STORIES

THE FAIRBANKS CONCERT ASSOCIATION received a generous donation to create a living document that would firmly align FCA with the needs and interests of the Fairbanks community and Interior Alaska in regards to performing arts available throughout the region. This donation was matched by Strategic Growth Systems, a professional management consulting firm and the Fairbanks Concert Association now has a dynamic strategic plan to serve the organization’s vision in planning for future capacity and success.

The Fairbanks Concert Association uses the dynamic plan to ensure a steady course in providing the Interior and partnering communities with performances that enhance the quality of life in the region and meet the goals of FCA’s mission. Through audience development, education and community outreach, and fiscal stability, the Fairbanks Concert Association can accurately plan for future success.

The Fairbanks Concert Association was able

to bring over 30 events to Interior Alaska for the 2013 – 2014 season. These included 10 concerts, 9 guest artists, 5 rural outreach performances, 4 school performances, and 2 workshops. Fully committed to enhancing and increasing the experiences that the community has available, FCA also coordinated and oversaw residencies at West Valley High School and the Fairbanks Youth Facility, performances at the Pioneer Home and Denali Center, and a series of concerts made available to bush communities through public radio.

The plan is a living document, used on a daily basis which allows for a targeted and feasible approach to serving our patrons both on and off stage. The initiatives and improvement projects in the plan insure that FCA plans for the future and continues to make a difference in the community we serve.

DYNAMIC PLAN

The Fairbanks Concert Association has a dedicated and enthusiastic audience for their rural run out programs. Among this group are the residents of Healy, Alaska. This year, Healy had reason to celebrate—the hard work of the Healy Tech Team garnered award recognition and enhanced learning opportunities for the young team.

Throughout the season, the Healy Tech Team was able to learn new skills being part of large productions with intense and diverse logistics. For their efforts the team was awarded a Mayor’s

Award and will now receive school credit for participating on the team. The Fairbanks Concert Association is extremely proud to be a part of facilitating education opportunities within the performing arts for the community’s youth. (The Healy Tech Team not only contributed to the success of 2013—2014 Fairbanks Concert Association season—they donated 80 hours of time to the 2014 Arctic Winter Games.)
