The New Testament bears witness to Jesus as a Good Shepherd who takes care of the flock entrusted to his care. So thoroughgoing is his care that he is even willing to leave the ninety-nine sheep in the sheepfold while going in search for a single lost sheep. The plan of salvation which Jesus revealed involved calling, equipping, and empowering disciples who could in turn shepherd flocks of his followers in all the nations to which they would bring God’s Good News of mercy and redemption. That was the plan. But human nature beings as weak as it is reared its ugly head in the betrayal of Judas, the denial of Peter, the doubt of Thomas, and the hiding of the disciples while he suffered and died on the cross. It’s a wonder the church ever got off the ground and it wouldn’t have had Jesus not fulfilled his promise of sending the Holy Spirit upon those he called to carry on the mission which he began. They received power and strength so they could serve humbly as Good Shepherds who bore witness by the way they lived the Way of Life that Christ had shown them.
Over the last 2000 years many good shepherds, many of whom were called to lay down their lives for their flock have given honor and glory to God by the way they lived their lives: Mary Magdelene, Joanna, Martha & Mary of Bethany, Irenaeus, John Crysostom, Ignatius of Antioch, Augustine, Patrick, Francis of Assissi, Dominic, Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure, Benedict, Anselm, Bede, Charles Borromeo, Alphonsus Liguori, just to name a tiny fraction of Martyrs and Saints. There have also been many Popes whose imitation of Jesus distinguished them as truly good and faithful shepherds including John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. In recent years the church in Oklahoma and beyond has been built up by the witness of Blessed Stanley Rother and countless others who have been the victims of persecution around the world. How Blessed have we been.
But there have also been many Bad Shepherds as well. These are individuals who abused the power and authority that was entrusted to them as priests, bishops, cardinals, and even popes. Last week 87 year old Theodore McCarrick resigned his position as a member of the College of Cardinals because of credible and substantiated allegations of improper sexual conduct with at least two minors and with seminarians and priests. These revelations, along with many others in recent years, have left our bishops with the prospect of losing the confidence of their flocks. How did Cardinal McCarrick rise to the highest levels of church office when numerous of his contemporaries apparently knew of some of these charges? This short column cannot possibly do justice to this important matter, but we need to brace ourselves for further fallout with regard to the manner in which church leaders chose covering up to bringing things into the light. We may all have to choose between “casting stones” and personal repentance of our own sins.

REAL – Alpha presents the reality of who Jesus is. Those that lead Alpha are real and authentic and this allows the guests to be real themselves. People are welcome to ask questions and look for answers, with no pressure to contribute and no follow up if they don’t come back.
RELATIONAL –Alpha is based on genuine friendships that are built up over a few weeks and often last for years afterwards.
RELIANT – On Alpha we are reliant on the Holy Spirit because we realize that it is only God who changes people’s lives; we just introduce Him. No one can force anyone to believe anything. What we’ve found over the years is that if we allow people to be themselves and ask their questions, focus on building relationships and rely on the Holy Spirit, lives are changed.

PREPARING FOR BAPTISM CLASS
SUNDAY AUGUST 19th
1pm in Room 4
We conduct this one session program for members of our parish who are planning to baptize a child for the very first time. First time godparents are also welcome, but participation is optional. There are other expectations of parents who are going to promise to raise their child in the faith of the Church. Following this class, parents must contact Father Jack at least 30 days before the date you are requesting to see if there may be any special circumstances in scheduling the actual baptism. Child care is available upon request during the session.

TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY
There are many people in the community who work very hard to support themselves and their families but have no or very unreliable transportation. It is very difficult to land a good paying job without a car that can get you back and forth to work. Do you have an old car that still runs well that you are willing to donate to the parish? We can give you a letter attesting to your in kind contribution to make a valid tax deduction. Don’t have a car but willing to donate some cash to this new ministry? Contact Fr. Jack.
