No confirmed identification has been made for this person. She may be the Catherine Hayes who died Geelong West 1919 aged 84 and who is buried alone in the Methodist section of Western Cemetery. Both her parents are listed as unknown.

A John Hayes who died 1873 aged 71 born LIVE [Liverpool?] could be her father. He is buried in a public grave in the Methodist section of Eastern Cemetery. This is the only other Methodist burial recorded in Geelong for a Hayes.

There is another Catherine Hayes born Warrnambool 1859 who died Geelong 1914 [d/o James/Ann Dean]. Her mother died CAVA [?Cavendish] 1868 and Kate could have come to Geelong after that.

Sister of Isaac HEBB, bootmaker, listed in 1904 Directory, Colac

1903 Electoral Roll: Mary HEBB, home duties, and Isaac HEBB, bootmaker, Colac

From Colac group: Born in England. Mary Hebb migrated with her parents and siblings in 1853. In 1891 she was caring for her widowed blind mother, and her only male relative in Colac was her brother Isaac, a boot maker listed in the 1904 Directory, Colac. He was eighteen years younger than her and preoccupied with his historical research. Remembered in the family for her gentle, caring ways and ‘healing hands’, she was still enough of her own person to hold office in the Methodist Church and place her name at the top of one list on one of the petition cloths.

Joan Hunt's g-grandmotherCatherine "Kate" Clark was one of nine children born to Michael Clark (1809-1876) and Mary Ann Grogan (1818-1899) who married in 1838 in Kinsale, Ireland. Kate was born on 27 April 1848 on Norfolk Island, where her father was a sergeant in the 11th Regiment of Foot (the North Devonshire regiment). The other children who survived to adulthood were Elizabeth (1843-1915 unmarried), Margaret (1850-1931 m. Daniel Arthur Cronin), Sarah Ann (b.1854 Geelong), and Cecily (1860-1838 unmarried teacher). On 30 November 1852 Michael Clark was discharged from the Army, at Melbourne, suffering from severe bronchitis. His family had settled in Geelong by May 1855, where they lived at Myers Street, and Michael set up business as a bootmaker. Kate married Alfred Percival Hitchins on 10 February 1870 at St Mary’s Catholic Church Geelong. She and Alfred (he was born in Geelong in 1848) had ten children, and she would have been 43 years old when she signed the petition, when living at Lot 16 Gertrude Street, Geelong. Kate’s mother, Mary Ann Clark, died at the home of her widowed daughter Margaret Cronin at 2 Bourke Crescent, Geelong in 1899. Kate Hitchins died on 28 August 1917 at 5 Mary Street, St Kilda, and is buried in the Coburg Cemetery with two of her unmarried daughters, Stella and Ethel.

Emma Humble was a woman who used her capabilities, skills and influence in many fields. A comprehensive biography is included on pages 77-78 of 'For God, Home and Humanity: a history of the Geelong City Union of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union 1888-1988' by Judith Pargeter. Her photograph is also in this book. Some of her contributions to Geelong and the wider community include:* Organist, choir member and Sunday school teacher from her teenage years.* Marriage to William Humble a partner in the Vulcan Foundry business who served as a councillor for 20 years and was Mayor of Geelong 1888/9. Emma assisted him as Mayoress and was also supportive in his other community activities which included the Geelong Hospital, the Free Library and The Gordon College.* A very active member and Foundation President 1888-1892 of the Geelong WCTU. In all she had eighteen years as President over a 36 year span. She also held numerous other roles during her many years involvement including Superintendent of Suffrage.* Other community organisations such as YWCA, Australian Women's National League, Women's Auxiliary for Foreign Missions and the Female Refuge [later Bethany Babies Home].* Mother of one daughter and four surviving sons who used her home 'Richmond House' in Ryrie St as a haven of hospitality and welcome.

Times of sadness in Emma's life would include her only daughter moving to South Australia and the loss of a son 1914 in a foundry accident. She appears a woman not just 'strong' by name but also by nature and had wide and positive influence in the Geelong community. The huge support for the Women's Suffrage Petition in Geelong is largely attributable to her.

Moses married Elizabeth Cocking [b Cornwall d/o Joseph Cocking/Elizabeth Allen] 1855. She died 1858 and he then married Eliza Cocking 1859 presumably a younger sister [aged 17] to Elizabeth. No issue found for either marriage. The signature is for Elizabeth Hyatt and Eliza had perhaps chosen to call herself that.
