Frankston Clean Up At Area Contests
Results for Frankston at the Area B1 ContestsFirst up came the Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contests for Area B1 hosted by Frankston.Funny Speeches and excellent evaluations. The scene was set, a full house, and not a chair tospare. Frankston's Anne Ahern the Winner of the Humorous Speech Contest with a tale ofshopping woes and dog experts. Simon Walliker then placed Second in a high calibre EvaluationContest.
The Contests concluded with the Table Topics and International Speech events hosted byMornington Peninsula. The Table Topics Contest posed the question "if you could go back intime, what would you change about your life and why?" After an excruciatingly long wait for ananswer it was announced that David A. Hughes was the Winner. David A. Hughes backed that upwith a Win in the International Speech Contest for his deeply personal and moving story titled "if Ionly listened" with Simon Walliker coming Second with his hard hitting message of "respect &attention".
As a side note fellow Frankston Toastmasters Candie "Durbs" Durber and Robyn O'Donnell bothwill be going through to Area Contests. Durbs with Evaluation, Table Topics, and Humour forMornington Peninsula; whilst Robyn was successful in Humour for Silver Service.
A coterie of former and current Division and Area Governors were on hand as Contest Chairs andJudges. We even had a past District Governor on the team. Add to this mix a travellingToastmaster from Thailand. Thank you to our fellow contestants from Cranbourne, Frankston,Mornington Peninsula, and South Coast Toastmasters Clubs. This makes it a clean sweep forFrankston having at least one representative in each of the four contests going on to compete inthe Bass Division contests hosted by Berwick on February 28th, 2015. Two great nights ofcompetition. See you for the Bass Division contests next year.
Five Stars"The place to be; to enhance your communication, public speaking and leadership skills. A warm and friendly environment we welcome guests and support members in achieving their goals. As a
long term member of thirteen years, I recommend it highly." Robyn O'Donnell

"Reach For Your Star" District 73 Semi-Annual Convention
Simply put the internet does not do justice to the picturesque views ofBrighton Beach from Milano's the location of this year's Semi AnnualConvention. Once the formalities were out of the way we went straight to themornings keynote speaker Jon Yeo from TEDx Melbourne organisers of BestPractice summits her in Melbourne. Jon's key quotes include "No one has themonopoly on ideas; the youngest we have had on our stage was 16 yearsold, the oldest was 90"... "answer only what is questioned, nothing else; don'tgive anyone a reason to put you aside"... "I factor in a 5% disapproval factorto our events; our aim is to push the boundaries, but you don't know wherethe boundaries are till you go there"
The workshop titled Outside Your Comfort Zone hosted by Ian Murray andFrankston's David A. Hughes tested the boundaries in even more picturesquesurroundings sharing tips on how to keep the audience engaged in tryingcircumstances. The duo left us with these gems "the most important part ofthe speech is the thought process of the audiences mind"... "to help connect, focus your eye contact for longer than is ordinarily comfortable"
Kevin Broughton and Robert Williams from Clearly Talking presented BigHairy Audacious Goals. Here we heard about "Can vs. Should" "Logical vs.Fanciful" and "Thwarting Behaviour" a more aggressive form of Tall PoppySyndrome conducted by yourself and others the nay sayers. This pairspearlers included "things holding you back are fairly often the things inside ofyou"... "self esteem relies on your sense of self worth, sense of competence, and sense of belonging"
Frankston's Michael Lilley Area B1 Governor gave a speech opening for the@d73 council. His speech gave us a gift, not a gift in the conventional senseof the word, but a gift of 30 minutes. Standing proxy at the District Council itwas inspiring to hear of the goals progress and monitoring across the district. What was more inspiring was the passion and commitment displayed ofwhich certain items will make their way back to club level to be discussed.
