BIRTHS

On the 28th instant, Mrs Maitland, No. 9, Circus Place, Edinburgh, of a daughter. At Hawick, on the 19th curt., Mrs Dickson, of a daughter. At Thainston House, on the 23d current, the Honourable Lady Forbes of Craigievar, of a daughter. At Stromness, the Lady of Hector Munro, Esq. of a son. On the 19th instant, at Mount Benger, Yarrow, Mrs Hogg, wife of the Ettrick Shepherd, of a daughter. At Craigmaddie, on the 17th current, the Lady of Captain Dirom, of the 8th foot, of a daughter. Lately, Mrs Herbert Wigg, of Walpole, near Halesworth, Suffolk, was safely delivered of four sons, since dead. The mother is doing well. On the 9th ult., at Valetta, in Malta, Lady Georgianna, wife of the Rev. Joseph Wolff, missionary to the Jews, of a daughter.

MARRIED

At Carterton, on the 28th ult., by the Rev. Jacob Wright, Mr Robert Carruthers, Burrance, to Sarah, youngest daughter of the late Peter Bell, Esq. of Whitenowe. At Paris, on the 17th current, Dr W. English, to the Right Honourable Lady M. Gordon, of Scotland

DIED

Here, on the 24th ult., Miss Bell of Greenhill. Here, on the 26th ult., Mrs Janet Edgar, spouse of Mr John Gregan, cabinet-maker. After eight years of severe bodily suffering, including latterly the loss of the powers of vision,

which she bore with the greatest fortitude and resignation, she has been called to another and better world; but while the poor will miss a generous benefactress, her friends and family will long cherish the remembrance of one who was an example of every Christian virtue. Here, on the 26th ult., Mr John Milligan, grocer, Friars’ Vennel, aged 59 – much and deservedly regretted. At Bothwell Castle, Lanarkshire, on the 26th December, in the 80th year of his age, the Right Honourable Archibald Lord Douglas of Douglas, Lord Lieutenant of the county of Forfar, &c. His Lordship, who was born 10th July, 1748, succeeded to the estates of Douglas, Forfar, &c. on the death of his uncle the Duke of Douglas, in 1861. His Lordship married in 1771, Lady Lucy Graham, sister to his Grace the Duke of Montrose; and he next married, in 1785, Lady Francis Scott, daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch, and has left issue of both marriages. After having represented the county of Forfar for a good many years, he was, in 1799, created a British Peer. – His Lordship has through life, shown himself a sound constitutional statesman, always avoiding those that were given to change. In private life, Lord Douglas set an example of rational piety, and virtuous conduct, every way worthy of a good man., He resided mostly in Scotland, and kept up an establishment suitable to his rank and opulence, without embarrassing himself – displaying true dignity and splendour, void of ostentation. To such of his tenants and servants as acted with propriety, his Lordship was kind and indulgent; but always turned off such as acted incorrectly. Lord Douglas and his family seemed as if they vied with each other in acts of charity and benevolence. Although his Lordship had no interest in the parish of Hamilton, and must have seen that another nobleman had promised to share his loaf with the poor of that parish, yet whenever a case of distress there came to be known at Bothwell Castle, a liberal donation, suited to the circumstances, was instantly made – frequently handed in by one or other of his Lordship’s amiable daughters. The blessings of many, who were ready to perish, have been showered with gratitude on Lord Douglas and his family. His Lordship is succeeded in his estates and honours by his eldest son, Archibald, now Lord Douglas. Lately, in Paris, Miss Helen Maria Williams, a celebrated authoress, chiefly on subjects connected with the French Revolution.

15th January 1828

BIRTHS

At Rydale, yesterday morning, Mrs Syme was safely delivered of a daughter. At Furbar, near Castle-Douglas, on Wednesday last, Mrs John Shaw, of twin daughters. On Wednesday last, the wife of Mr Ayong Chongtie, one of the Chinese Ladies now exhibiting in Manchester, of a daughter, the only Chinese, we believe, ever born in this kingdom.

MARRIED

Here, yesterday, by the Rev. Dr. Scot, Captain John Henderson, late of the German Legion, now Lieutenant of the 54th Regiment of Foot, to Margaret, third daughter of the late Lieutenant and Quarter Master M’Intosh, of the Dumfries-shire Militia. DIED

Here on Sunday se’nnight, aged 45, Mr Andrew Montgomery, baker, deeply regretted. Here, on Friday the 4th inst., Mr Andrew Chalmers, at an advanced age. At Sanquhar, on the 7th curt., in the 28th year of his age, William Kennedy, son of Mr James Kennedy, teacher there. While his parents deeply deplore the premature loss of an only child, his modest worth, probity, and social virtue, will long be remembered and held dear by his friends and juvenile companions. He possessed a ready flow of wit, cheerful vivacity, and comic humour, which were highly appreciated, not only by his acquaintances, but by all who had an opportunity of witnessing his public performance of Bailie Nicol Jarvie and other characters, in which he sometime ago appeared, on the occasion of some plays being acted in Sanquhar for charitable purposes. Mr Kennedy had received a liberal education, and though bred to no particular business, he began about three years since to employ himself as a tomb stone letterer and sign painter. The neat and chaste style in which he executed the ornamental part of his work in the former department will prove a lasting memorial of his taste and genius. The Friendly Highland Society of Sanquhar, of which the deceased was a member, attended his funeral in a body, dressed in deep mourning, bore his mortal remains to the “cold house of clay.” in solemn procession, and as a small mark of esteem and respect for his memory, generously defrayed a part of the funeral expences.

At Moffat, on the 8th curt., at the advanced age of 86 years, James Amoss, Esq., late of the city of Kingston, in the Island of Jamaica, wherein he was a merchant, a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, and an Alderman. He was a gentleman highly respected in life, and his death will be deeply regretted by those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.

For nearly forty years, in the Shire and Stewartry of Galloway, he found full scope to exercise his talents. The violin was his favourite instrument, and his performance upon it was truly admirable. He was neither a Samson nor a Saul among the people – his perpendicular height being about 3 feet 11 inches. He pursued his profession for some time in the Navy during the American war and afterwards in the town of Kendal. About 40 years ago, he returned, on account of his health, to his native place in the village of Roucan, where his forefathers for many generations had resided, possessing nearly the same portion of ground, and where he spent the remainder of his life, usefully employed in the duties of his profession. As a medical man, he was reckoned a safe and skilful practitioner. On all occasions he was extremely moderate in his charges, and very often he would take no recompense at all

for his trouble. His death will make a great blank to his friends, and will be felt as a general loss to the neighbourhood. At Carronhill, in the parish of Morton, in this county, on the 19th current, Mr George Gracie. Had this venerable man lived till the 2d of next month, he would have been 94 years of age; and it is not a little remarkable as to the patriarchal ages of the members of this family, that his brother Thomas died on 15th January 1819, at 87; and his sister Miss Sarah Gracie upon 25th January, 1825; at the very advanced aged of 92. – They thus all died in the same month, after an unusually protracted existence; and what is still more singular, they never shifted from the habitations in which they were born and died, above 100 yards, and never were a single day confined to bed, or afflicted with any of the “ills of life,” or sickness of any description, until the hand of death came upon them; and even then their lives ceased without a struggle, and they left the world as if they had been enjoying their natural rest. At Cally-Stables, near Gatehouse, on Thursday se’nnight, of Consumption, Mr Alexander Neal, aged 20 – much regretted. At Jamaica, on the 2d of November last, in the prime of life, Mr John Dryden, son of Mr Robert Dryden, writer in Sanquhar. Within the short period of a month after his landing on the island, this clever and promising young man fell premature victim to its baneful climate. His filial affection, suavity of manners, and moral and religious virtues, will be long cherished and revered by his relatives and numerous circle of acquaintances. At Hampden Estate, Falmouth, Jamaica, on the 6th of August last, in consequence of a fall from his horse, Walter Chalmers, son of the late James Chalmers, Esq., solicitor at law, Edinburgh. At Hawick, at an advanced age, Miss Moncrief, eldest sister of the late Rev. Mr Moncrief, minister of Annan. At 41, Clerk Street, Edinburgh, on the 12th current, Mrs Henrietta Russel, wife of Mr John Matthewson, late letter-founder, Edinburgh. At Leith, on the 11th instant, Mr Alexander Ross, late Rector of the Grammar School, North Leith, aged 74. In London, on the 3d instant, Mr John Smart, shipmaster, a native of Dumfries – deeply regretted. At his house, in London, on the 17th instant, Sir William Augustus Cunnynghame of Milncraig, Bart. He succeeded his father, Lieutenant-General Sir David Cunnynghame, in 1768, and represented the county of Linlithgow in Parliament for many years. Few men have been more distinguished than Sir William Cunnynghame for elegance of manners, high breeding, and upright and honourable feeling. He was one of the few survivors of the old days of Scottish fashion – universally known and highly esteemed. He is succeeded by his eldest son, Colonel David Cunnynghame, who married Mary, daughter and co-heiress of Edward Lord Thurlow. At Chaplehall, in the parish of Bothwell, on the 8th ult., John Gentles, aged 104.

In 1790 he embarked for the Bahama Islands, where he remained till 1793 when he joined Sir J. In September Major-General Leigh took the chief command, and General, then Major-General, Irving, went to take the command of St. Vincent’s. FUNERAL OF THE LATE GLENGARRY. – The remains of this distinguished chief were consigned to their “narrow house” on the 1st inst. A large concourse of clansmen assembled to pay the last sad duty to their chief; and the attendance of gentlemen from all parts of the country was unusually numerous. About 150 gentlemen sat down to dinner in a large room in the square of Invergarry at twelve o’clock noon. The other attendants on the funeral, in number about 1500, were plentifully regaled with bread, cheese, and whisky. The procession commenced about two o’clock afternoon, and reached Kilfinan, the place of interment distant about five miles from Invergarry, between four and five o’clock. The body, enclosed in a double coffin, lead and wood, was born breast high by 18 Highlanders, who were relieved at regular intervals. The day was uncommonly tempestuous, and the procession had to pass on foot through a swollen burn, reaching above the knees of the people in the procession. The chief mourner was the young Chief of Glengarry, the only surviving son of the late Mac M..ic Alister. Young Glengarry was dressed in the full highland garb of his ancestors, with an eagle’s feather in his bonnet, covered with crape. – He was supported by his maternal uncle Lord Medwyn, and his paternal uncle Colonel Macdonell of the Guards. Some hundreds of the people were arrayed in the highland garb; the mournful pibroch was wailed forth by the

His first attempt being successful, he became anxious to diffuse the blessing; and having procured an adequate supply of lymph, he frequently walker eight or ten miles, and vaccinated from eighty to a hundred children before his return. For a number of years he made regular tours for this purpose to the surrounding villages. About twelve years ago, he asserted that he had inoculated above 13,000 children in all, not one of whom took the small pox; and though only a weaver, he pertinaciously [sic] refused all recompence [sic] for his trouble. His benevolent exertions eventually attracted the attention of the vaccine establishment, who elected him an honorary member, sent him a diploma, and voted him a handsome silver cup as marks of their approbation of his exertions. At Glenlee, on the 16th instant, of a pulmonary affection, induced by rapid overgrowth, Agnes, second daughter of Mr James Hyslop, an amiable and most interesting young girl of fourteen. To a graceful person and comely countenance, with the most pleasing manners and unaffected modesty, in her were united a maturity of understanding, a delicacy and cultivation of mind, with a degree of staid prudence, but seldom to be met with in one of her tender years; and her premature loss has not only occasioned the greatest grief to her parents and near relatives, but will long be the subject of regret to all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. On the 19th instant, at Kirkland, in the parish of Kelton, Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, John Halliday, Esq. in the 83d year of his age. Few men have passed through life with more unsullied reputation. It may justly be said of him, that the intellectual and moral worth with which his character was invested, rendered him in his station one of those venerable pillars by which the fabric of society is upheld. The soundness of his judgment, and the inflexible integrity of his principles, commanded universal respect. He was distinguished for a manly candour, frankness, and decision of deportment. His general views were liberal – and his opinions as an umpire and arbitrator, which were frequently requested, gave the highest satisfaction. In his habits he was regular and temperate and for the last forty years of his life, he enjoyed uninterrupted good health. The short illness which preceded his death and which was occasioned by some morbid affection of the liver, he bore with exemplary fortitude and resignation. He was deeply impressed with a sense of the goodness of God, and looked forward with Christian hope to the blessedness of immortality. His memory will long be cherished by an extensive circle of acquaintances.

At Maxwelltown, on Wednesday last, the 30th of July, Mr John Dalling, jun., blacksmith, aged 26 years. Here is another striking instance of the feeble tenure of human life. – This young man possessing health and strength, was, from the awful and sudden dispensation, deprived of existence in the space of a few minutes. It is believed that a blood vessel at his heart had ruptured, occasioned by an over exertion of physical strength in turning the lever of a large vice, in his father’s workshop. Those who had the

pleasure of his acquaintance, would be utterly at a loss whether most to respect him for his goodness of heart, or to admire him for his transcendant talents. He possessed the most prepossessing and unassuming manners, and his conduct in every particular was exemplary in the extreme. Considering his youth, he was astonishingly proficient in mechanical arts, and was held by judges as having the most promising genius in this quarter of the Kingdom, united with a brilliant imagination. In short he combined every thing that was amiable and admirable, and there were fair prospects that he would have soon moved in a very different sphere in life. His parents and relations, and a numerous circle of acquaintances deplore his loss. At Terreran, near Minnyhive, on Friday last, Mrs Agnes Grierson, wife of John Barber, Esq. of Terreran. At Newton-Stewart, on the 21st instant, in the 82d year of his age, Mr William Thomson, merchant there, much and deservedly regretted by an extensive circle of friends and acquaintances. Having returned to his native country soon after the commencement of the American war of independence, it is now upwards of half a century since he commenced business in Newton-Stewart. In the discharge of all the relative duties of life, as a husband, father, neighbour, and friend, his conduct was most exemplary; and in him was happily blended the utmost strength of understanding with the very kindliest feelings, and hence the deserving poor, in proportion to his circumstances, ever found in him a ready support; yet so single-minded was he, and so unostentatious in the dispensation of his charities, that it might be truly said of him, that his left hand was never permitted once to recognize what his right hand had done. To the sufferings attending a long course of complicated disease, he submitted without a murmur; and, in fine, it may be not inappropriately remarked, that, although never invested with the pride or pomp of high worldly circumstances, such was the tenor of his whole life, that

At sea, in the Mediterranean, on the 16th of September last, Commander P. Salmond, second

Captain of his Majesty’s ship Asia, bearing the flag of Vice-Admiral Sir P. Malcolm, K.C.B.

This most excellent and promising young officer began the world almost without friends, but

he made them for himself as he advanced. Early and long a First Lieutenant, his conduct in

that capacity was rewarded by promotion in 1821, since which time remaining unemployed,

he was so eager to return active service, that, when, in June last, the warm recommendation

of Sir Pulteney Malcolm procured for him the appointment, which he held at his death, he left

home the very day the intimation reached him. He proceeded to the Mediterranean with his

distinguished chief, and there, in the full vigour of life and health, singularly athletic in

person, daring in temper, “every inch a seaman,” and serving with one who had long known

and fully appreciated these qualities, every thing which the service can bestow on talent and

exertion seemed within his reach, and, in fact, had he died a violent death, in the pursuit of its

glittering rewards, the catastrophe would have seemed but natural; it was otherwise decreed,

however. He was cut down by a bilious fever, after only three days illness, scarcely less to

the astonishment than grief of all who knew him, and has left a widowed mother and two

sisters, to lament a loss, for which they were altogether unprepared, and the more irreparable

to them, that much of their dependence in life was placed on his success.

At Dharwar, in the East Indies, on the 26th of May last, Adam Maitland, Esq., of the Civil Service of the East India Company, fourth son of Adam Maitland, Esq. of Dundrennan. Here, on Monday the 17th current, in the prime of life, Mr Patrick Maxwell Brown, printer, only surviving son of the late Mr Adam Brown, of this place. He was most unassuming in manner and conversation – of a truly honest, kind, and cheerful disposition. His premature death is deeply deplored by his sorrowing relations and acquaintance. Suddenly, at Glasgow, on the 5th current, Mr James Morrison, son of Mr Alexander Morrison, merchant, Wigtown, a young man of the best dispositions, whose premature death has caused the deepest grief to his friends and acquaintances. At Cairnbank, Berwickshire, on the 14th current, Miss Ainslie, only daughter of the late Robert Ainslie, Esq., of Darnchester. On the 18th September last, in the island of Jamaica, deeply regretted, Samuel Blount, Esq., whose urbanity and goodness of heart endeared him to all, both at home and abroad. Mathew Dripps, a native of Kilmarnock, who for twenty three years had the pastoral care of the Presbyterian church and congregation in that place. On the 8th of last month, at the Grecian island of Paros, Lieutenant Brudenell J. Bruce, of the 3d regiment of foot guards, nephew to the Earl of Elgin. By all who knew this excellent young man he will be deeply lamented; and, had it pleased God to spare him until a riper age, his superior natural gifts, polished as they were by the finest education, and the hereditary patriotism with which he was thoroughly inspired and which was also blended with every other most amiable disposition, would doubtless have rendered his loss a subject of public regret. Lieut. Bruce, after visiting the Morea and the French army here, had joined Mr Stratford Canning on board the Dryad frigate, on the 29th of Sept. last, in the harbour of Paros. From this period a fever, of which he seemed for some time previous to have exhibited symptoms, appears to have increased, although from his exertions and cheerfulness no serious alarm was entertained until the 6th of last month, when, as he suffered from the noise of the ship, he was by his own desire, and by the advice of the medical officers of the Dryad, removed on shore. On the morning of the 7th he appeared to rally, but the fever returned with violence at night; and about four in the morning of the 8th, he expired without a groan, or even the aspect of suffering. We have the satisfaction to know that this excellent youth received every comfort that the affectionate watchfulness of his intimate friend Mr Canning could afford.
