Public notice is your right to know about the issues that directly affect your life. And, you can easily find public notices in your local news-paper. Without public notices in the newspaper, you’re left to guess
about what the government is doing in your community and how elected officials are spending your tax dollars.Your local newspaper fulfils an essential role in serving your right to know. After all, it shouldn’t be your responsibility to know how to look... where to look... when to look... even what to look for in order to be informed about your public information. It is the govern-ment’s responsibility to notify you of public information, and your local newspaper is the most accessible place to find it.

WESTFIELD, Ind. – They said he wasbig, and he is. Colts guard Quenton Nel-son is listed at 6-5, 330 pounds, andthose numbers don’t completely de-scribe the cartoonish size he brings toan NFL locker room, where everyone isbig but Nelson is somehow … bigger.
“Broadest back I’ve ever seen in mylife,” Indianapolis quarterback AndrewLuck says.
They said he was nasty, and he is.Nelson, the first-round pick out of NotreDame, spotted Colts coach Frank Reichshortly before the first full-pad practiceof camp last week and was bugging himto call for running plays, specifically forplays that would let Nelson put hishands on someone and drive them un-derground. “Dirt-dogging” is what de-fensive tackle Grover Stewart told meNelson wants to do to opposing line-men, and sure enough, Nelson was in-volved in the first flare-up of camp when6-2, 307-pound defensive tackle Ra-keem Nunez-Roches objected to hismethodology.
“Nasty mean streak,” offensive coor-dinator Nick Sirianni says.
One week into training camp atGrand Park, Quenton Nelson is thestorm we were told was coming whenthe Colts did something weird andchose an offensive guard with the sixthoverall pick of the 2018 draft. Guardsdon’t normally go that early, but Nelsonisn’t normal. In his last two seasons atNotre Dame, Nelson allowed zero sacks.
And pass protection isn’t his strong
suit, if you can believe that. He’ll get bet-ter with time and technique, but Nel-son’s strength at the moment isn’tstanding up and backpedaling and buy-ing time for the quarterback to throw. No, his strength is exploding into his de-fender, a box of dynamite delivered tothe poor guy’s chest, and locking him upuntil the whistle blows and someonelike Nunez-Roches is tired of beingmauled and starts lashing out.
On Tuesday, I saw this happen: Nel-son is blocking 6-5, 270-pound DenicoAutry, a fifth-year veteran who lookslike the Colts’ best defensive lineman, and Autry is tired of Nelson’s hands be-ing on him after a pass by Luck, so hegrabs them and throws them away. ButNelson puts his hands back on Autry, because the whistle hasn’t blown. AndNelson plays through the whistle. That’swhat his dad taught him in Pop Warner, when Quenton Nelson — who came intothis world as a 10-pound, 10-ouncebruising baby boy — had to drop 20pounds each summer to play on his old-
er brother’s youth team.He hasn’t played an NFL game yet, so
let’s not go crazy with our praise, but …Nah, that’s no fun. Let’s go nuts. Let’slisten to Stewart, the second-year prowho at 6-4, 330 pounds is the biggestplayer on the Colts defense.
“He’s going to be a great player,”Stewart says of Nelson.
At one point during 11-on-11 drillsTuesday, it fell to Nelson to slide overand handle the bull rush of rookie Ty-quan Lewis, a 6-3, 269-pound defensivelineman out of Ohio State. Lewis hadphysics on his side — he had momen-tum and energy and force — but Nelsonmajored in business, not in physics, andthe buck stopped right there. It lookedas if Lewis had run into a brick wall, which I suppose he had.
You know that whole unsolvable par-adox about an unstoppable force meet-ing an immovable object? When Nelsonis the immovable object, consider thatparadox solved.
“At guard,” left tackle Anthony Cas-
tonzo says, “you want one of those peo-ple that if he’s walking down the streetand someone comes and runs at him fullspeed, that person is going to getknocked out even though he didn’tknow it was coming. (Nelson) has thatability that when people run into him, they move and he doesn’t.”
It’s strength, for one thing, and at theNFL scouting combine in Indianapolisbefore the draft Nelson bench-pressed35 reps of 225 pounds. But it’s also anattitude of confidence and nastiness, one Nelson was more willing to sharebefore the draft, when he was trying tosell himself, than he is now, as he’s moreinterested in fitting in. Nelson’s soundbites have been devoid of meat sincetraining camp began, but at the com-bine in March he said, “I should be in thetop-five (draft) conversation,” and “Ialso help the offense establish the runthrough my nastiness.” And, “I want todominate all my opponents. I want totake their will away to play the game.”
These days Nelson talks about tech-nique and footwork and being a goodteammate and making Castonzo andcenter Ryan Kelly proud, but don’t befooled. He didn’t go soft on anyone. Inthe hour of 11-on-11 drills I saw, Nelsonwas the first offensive lineman sprintingdown the field after Luck had completeda pass. I asked him why.
“When a wide receiver catches theball and he gets tackled,” Nelson said, “Iwant to be the first guy to help him upand let him know: ‘Great job, I’ve gotyour back, let’s keep moving the ball.’ ”
That’s not the only reason he’s run-ning downfield. On one screen play, Nel-son was running downfield and thewhistle hadn’t blown and safety T.J.Green was in the vicinity, so Nelson hithim. Green didn’t like it, but he’ll learn toexpect it and avoid it. All the Colts willlearn, and someday the rest of the NFL:
A storm’s coming, and it is every bitas violent as we were led to believe.
Colts’ Nelson will violently protect LuckRookie lineman playsall out until whistle stops
Gregg DoyelColumnistThe Indianapolis StarUSA TODAY Network
Colts offensive guard Quenton Nelson (56), taken sixth overall in the draft, works on technique during the first week of training camp. MICHAEL CONROY/AP
Sounds like an early impressionstraight out of the Black Hole. The refer-ence to Gannon, who went from jour-neyman to NFL MVP when joined at thehip with Gruden nearly two decadesago, is like dropping an ace on the ex-pectations.
But that’s pretty much the standardthe Raiders need to roll with, Carr andGruden, creating their own version ofthe Big Bang Theory, if they are to be-come relevant again and the $100 mil-lion coach is to prove his worth.
Gruden knows. He can’t win withouta quarterback. Carr, 27, like his teamcoming off a disappointing 6-10 cam-paign, could use a spark-plug tutor tohelp him get back on track. So they are amatch in that regard.
Wait a minute. Wasn’t Gruden sup-posed to be the madman to drive Carrcrazy? That was part of the early narra-tive after Gruden replaced Jack Del Rioin early January. Carr heard as much.Thought it was hilarious.
Said Carr, “It was, ‘Oh, no, he’s goingto yell at him.’ I would hope so. He’s mycoach. I don’t care about anything elsebesides winning. Whatever you can doto help me win, let’s do that.”
Hey, it’s early. The Raiders are goingthrough their training camp regimen inthe laid-back wine country. The heatwill escalate when, say, Carr gets into ashootout against Philip Rivers. Or whenVon Miller is rushing his decisions andthrows. Or when he is pressed to mounta last-minute rally at raucous Arrow-head Stadium. Those tests are coming.
At the moment, the quarterback andcoach have laid a foundation with theirlove of the grind. “We have like 99 out of100 things in common,” Carr told USATODAY. “We just express it differently.”
Gruden has his ways to set a tone ashe works exclusively with the offense.Carr seems to look forward to being puton the spot with the direct questionsduring team meetings.
“You have to know it, because you’rein front of your teammates, your peers,”Carr said. “For the team’s sake, for win-ning, you’ve got to know.”
Tight end Jared Cook senses theemerging bond. He maintains that Carr
has been “like a totally different person”since working with the new coach, at-tacking the challenge with a certain ag-gression that didn’t exist last year.
“And every time Gruden asks him aquestion,” Cook added, “he gets it right.”
No doubt, they are just warming up.Carr, who struggled last season (22touchdowns, 13 interceptions), is look-ing to regain the rhythm he demonstrat-ed two seasons ago in helping the Raid-ers claim a wild-card spot, before hisseason ended in late December with abroken ankle. Gruden, meanwhile, getsanother shot to coach after beingdumped by the Buccaneers followingthe 2008 season.
Gruden has added new pieces to theoffense in receivers Jordy Nelson andMartavis Bryant, a two-time 1,500-yardrusher in Doug Martin, a blocking tightend in Lee Smith. He’s retooling the of-fensive line, too.
“Want to be like New England,” Gru-den declared. “I’ve said that all along. Iwant to be able to adapt to who we’replaying. Can we be a two-back team ifwe want to? If that’s going to help uswin, let’s put (Marshawn) Lynch inthere with Lee Smith, let’s put the full-
back in and let’s go. If we want to spread’em out with no backs instead, let’s dothat to win the game.”
That’s hardly a new approach forGruden, still bent on old school philoso-phies. During Gruden’s first tenure(1998-2001) with the Raiders, it wasn’tuncommon for him to substitute as if hehad a revolving door. One time at Kan-sas City, he must have opened the gamewith heavy substitutions that resultedin different formations for at least thefirst 15 different plays.
Now he needs Carr to flow with suchpatterns.
“I can’t begin tell you what this guy iscapable of doing, physically and men-tally,” Gruden said.
Gruden is challenged again to changethe culture of a franchise that had hadone winning season in the past 15 years, with Gruden the 10th Raiders coachsince he left.
“Every time I see him, it’s like, ‘I ap-preciate you. I love you,’ ” Carr said.“People don’t see that side. They just seehim throwing his hat.”
Now Carr is poised to impact whetherGruden will ultimately toss his hat indisgust or joy.

4D ❚ THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2018 ❚ USA TODAY LIFE
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – In ABC’s“The Rookie,” the new cop is a middle-age man.
“Castle” veteran Nathan Fillion, 47,said he could empathize with his char-acter, 40-year-old Los Angeles PoliceDepartment rookie John Nolan, afterscenes that require him to climb fences, sprint down streets and confront dan-gerous suspects.
“Six pounds of Epsom salts after atypical day of shooting and bruises upand down my thighs” was the ultimateresult, Fillion said Tuesday at the Tele-vision Critics Association summerpress tour. “I’m at the point in my lifewhere if I could have a stunt guy runningdown the street for me, these knees willappreciate it.”
Fillion showed off an engaging humorwhen he added: “I like that it’s rough forJohn Nolan. That is not far away from mytruth. Kneeling is a stunt for me.”
In “The Rookie,” Nolan takes a careerand life plunge, moving from small-town Pennsylvania to Los Angeles afterhis heroic response to a dangerous situ-ation helps him restart his dormant life.
The series also stars Richard T. Jones,Afton Williamson, Alyssa Diaz, TitusMakin Jr. and Mercedes Mason.
The series is based on the true storyof a middle-age rookie officer at theLAPD, where there isn’t an upper agelimit to join, as there is at many law en-forcement agencies, executive producerAlexi Hawley said.
Nolan’s police colleagues are hardlywelcoming, as they see the aged rookie, more than a decade older than the othernew arrivals, as a walking midlife crisiswho could endanger them.
Jones, who plays a sergeant whooversees Nolan, explains his character’sinitial hostility.
“When you’re older, you might be set
in your ways. He might could cause aproblem for the unit as a whole and putpeople’s lives in danger. The LAPD issuch a hard job. … You have to be willingto learn and the (sergeant) feels thatmaybe he’s at the age where he wouldn’tbe willing to learn the process,” he said.
Fillion said he feels many people areembarking on new careers and paths inlife when they hit middle age.
“This is a new norm we are experi-encing culturally: the do-over, the re-boot,” he said. “A lot of people are havingthis reinvention experience or knowsomeone who has.”
Although Fillion, a fan favorite cele-brating 25 years as an actor, hasn’tchanged careers, he appreciates hisgood fortune, especially his eight-season run on ABC’s “Castle.”
“To have a television show is a bigdeal. To have one last more than twoweeks is an even bigger deal.
“Eight years is more than I could have asked for, more than I could havehoped for.”
