THOMAS J. DONOHUE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, has been an influential force in American business and politics since taking the helm of the Chamber in 1997. The Chamber is the world’s
largest business federation, representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
Mr. Donohue has worked to revitalize capital markets, expand trade and domestic energy production, and protect intellectual property rights. In addition, he has vigorously challenged attacks on free enterprise while protecting the business community’s right to speak and participate in political and policy affairs of the nation.
Mr. Donohue established the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform, which advances significant legal reforms in the courts, at the state and federal levels, and in elections for state attorneys general and Supreme Court judges. He has also dramatically expanded the activities of the U.S. Chamber Litigation Center, which
represents the business community’s interests in the courts.
Under Mr. Donohue’s leadership, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation has been reinvigorated. As part of its mission to strengthen America’s long-term competitiveness, the Foundation supports Hiring Our Heroes, a nationwide initiative that identifies job opportunities for returning veterans, transitioning service
members and military spouses.
Mr. Donohue’s career includes leading the American Trucking Associations and service as deputy assistant postmaster general of the United States.
The native New Yorker earned a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University and a master’s degree in business administration from Adelphi University. He is a recipient of the Horatio Alger Award and the Boy Scouts of America National Capital Area Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He holds the highest civilian honor
from Germany and South Korea, as well as the Order of the Crown (Commander Class) presented by the Crown Prince of Belgium.
The following is a list of candidates for degrees in December 2017 and May 2018. The degrees will be conferred upon those students who have completed their prescribed programs of study. Candidates for degrees who will complete their programs of study in August 2018, and are eligible to participate in this Commencement, are listed and indicated by an asterisk (*). Those students with a double asterisk (**) completed their programs of study prior to December 2017 but are participating in Commencement for the first time. Students marked with a hashtag (#) are receiving two Master of Arts degrees, Master of Education degrees or Master of Science degrees.

MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY ALMA MATER
ACADEMIC REGALIAThe wearing of caps and gowns for academic ceremonies dates back to medieval times. The practices followed by colleges and universities in the United States today are based on a uniform code developed by the American Council on Education in 1896.
According to the code, the gowns worn by bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients are always black; differently shaped sleeves distinguish the gowns for these two levels. Doctoral gowns are more elaborate, with flowing sleeves and velvet markings. Some doctoral gowns are made in the color of the university awarding the degree.
Graduates at all levels wear hoods lined with brightly colored fabric. The colors of the lining indicate the college or university that awarded the degree; the color of the hood’s velvet border indicates the wearer’s field of study.
The cap, also known as the mortarboard, is black and should be worn squarely on the head. The tassel attached to its top is usually black, but can be a color that indicates the graduate’s field of study. Those holding doctoral degrees often wear soft velvet tams or large berets, with a gold tassel.
THE MACEThe mace of Marymount University has been carried in academic processions since the early 1970s, when it was given to the institution by Marjorie Willard, professor emerita. Miss Willard joined the faculty in 1954 and served for many years as faculty marshal after being elected to the position by her colleagues. Made of silver in the tradition of Virginia colleges, the mace is crowned with the seal of the university, which incorporates the trefoil cross and the heart for the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary; the fleur de lis for France, where the RSHM order was founded in 1849; and bars symbolizing the stripes of the American flag. The mace is carried today by Mr. Donald Lavanty, Professor of Business, Healthcare Management.
