PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Leon Jacobs

The Club entered 2013/14 with tremendous enthusiasm. With Paul Jubber

reappointed as coach, a new suite of captains, a strong pre-season including our

inaugural winter training academy and a club resolution that saw almost all of

our games across all four teams playing only Sunday cricket, there was a genuine

air of anticipation that improvement on the field was around the corner.

Jubbs continues to be a tremendous asset to us. Together with Justin this year

they have found the exact balance between massaging egos and demanding more

professionalism and hard work from our playing group. Many people involved

with cricket have told me in secret how lucky we are to have Jubbs and to hang

on to him – and we have no intention of doing anything else!

Thanks to the generous funds made available by the Maccabi Victoria Sports

Foundation, this winter we embarked on our first ever “Academy”. Junior and

young senior players were selected and invited to participate at minimal costs.

They enjoyed coaching not only from Paul Jubber, Garry Kitto and Simon Fisher,

but also from Brad Hodge, Adam Dale, Bryce McGain and Dean Jones – what a

lineup! We are committed to making the academy an annual fixture.

Off the field, as I hinted earlier, we undertook two significant initiatives this

season. Firstly, after being given very strong support from the Mercantile

association match committee, we requested for all our home and if possible,

away games to be played on Sundays across all teams. This was nearly achieved

with only the second eleven playing 6 Saturdays for the full season. The third and

fourth eleven participated in Sunday competitions and the firsts games were all

scheduled for Sundays. Secondly, we undertook a major renovation of the centre

wicket area at Oval 9 with the support and backing of Parks Victoria.

The benefits of Sunday play were immediate. It allowed our club to no longer

discriminate against those who were Shomer Shabbat. Instantly all club members

could be selected on merit in the teams befitting of their ability, potential and

training efforts. The benefits of the pitch renovation we hope to be enjoyed this

season now that the seeds have had the opportunity to sow and we are able to

devote adequate resources to prepare the wickets.

Mark Soffer was appointed captain of the first eleven. Despite his youth Mark is

a tremendous leader. Players play with him and for him. They respond to his

style, words and actions. For the first time in many seasons the first eleven

played finals cricket. They are a very young squad with enormous upside and we

hope and believe that Mark is building a team capable of sustained success.

Matt Aubor took on the role of seconds captain. He hoped to lure a few of his

contemporaries back to the club to play alongside him and help him guide our

plethora of young talent through a difficult A Reserve competition. Unfortunately

not many experienced past players responded positively to Matt’s overtures

leaving the seconds short on talent. To be truthful they were a little out of their

depth. And when games were scheduled for Saturdays, Matt was robbed of even

more skill. No doubt Matt’s final season did not pan out as he had planned or

hoped, but he remains a legend of our club, a committed warrior, and a dedicated

clubman whose input will always be acknowledged. Next season we will

appropriately re-grade the seconds to allow them to be far more competitive.

Peretz Shapiro was a new face who came to the club pre-season. Right from day

one his enthusiasm for the game and the club was evident. Within weeks of the

season starting Peretz put his hand up to take on the captaincy of the thirds. At

different stages of the season the thirds were the most dominant team in the grade

and only late in the season did they lose some of their momentum before bowing

out in the semi finals. The performance of the team was a credit to Peretz and we

look forward to his continued involvement and leadership.

Aaron Fetter won the Hans Spitz best Clubman award this season. He is an

exceptional young man. Many years ago the Club reached out to Aaron when

former club president Jeff Israel insisted that we should because he recognized

the need but also his character. Aaron has repaid us in spades and we are so

proud of him and the contribution he makes not only to our Club but also his

family and his community.

Speaking of great clubman, in late January our club was shaken to its core when

we learned of the plight of our great friend Paul Fink. Proof that sometimes the

world is not a fair place and that greater people than us are making decisions

about each and every one of us has never been more evident. We as a committee

are so proud of our club members for the way they reacted to support, pray and

play for Paul. The news from Paul’s family and friends continues to be so

positive and he continues to improve every day. No surprise really if you know

Paul – his character, his strength, his resolve, his determination, his love,

Page 6: 18 th Annual General Meeting - Home | Maccabi Australia

Annual Report 2013/14

Page 6

everything he is and what he stands for have given him every chance to make as

full a recovery as possible and we continue to pray every day for him.

We continue to derive great benefit from the financial support of our sponsors.

These funds allow us to provide members with great facilities and conditions

from which to get the most out of their cricket.

The Junior club continues to thrive and I congratulate Howard Machlin on the

work he does. Being a parent for the first time with a Junior club this season I

witnessed firsthand the great job they do with our young stars. We must continue

to forge ties with the Junior club so transition from junior cricket to seniors is

seamless and automatic.

Thank you to Maccabi Victoria for their continued support. We appreciate their

continued support and the role they play in Jewish sport and the broader

community.

Curating of our wicket was a great challenge for us again this season. Those

outside the club and committee probably just don’t realise how difficult it is to

find someone to prepare our wickets, especially with Sunday play. Will Long

showed a great deal of enthusiasm for the tasks early in the season but

unfortunately as the season rolled on Will found it more and more difficult, to

commit the time to adequately prepare our wickets. This led to a compromising

position for us with the Association and we need to improve in this area for our

reputation as well as the development of our young players. We must provide

them with reasonable turf conditions for them to ply their trade. Perhaps Dave

Robinson, a past curator, will become available again next season but this time

with an improved flat square to work with which I know would be a challenge he

would relish.

A very special thank you to all of the Club’s sponsors. The Committee and the

playing group are greatly appreciative of your continued support which allows us

to continually improve both on and off the field. An extra special thank you to

Rodney Morley Persichetti and Silver Arc who have been the Club’s major

sponsors for several years.

Simeon Goldenberg continued with the role of maintaining and growing our

corporate sponsorship and supporter base. We once again held a Corporate

Breakfast hosted by Wingate Group. The event was a great success, giving our

Page 7: 18 th Annual General Meeting - Home | Maccabi Australia

Annual Report 2013/14

Page 7

corporate sponsors the opportunity to network and be inspired by intrepid

adventurer Marc Sluszny while hearing more about the Club.

The Past Players Association continues to be a source of great pride for us. It is

great to see former players keeping up their ties to the Club either at the PPA

Golf Day or at a game on a Saturday or Sunday. This season we combined our

Family Day with a reunion of the firsts and thirds premiership teams of 1983/84

and it was a fantastic afternoon. The Junior club were great supports too shifting

an Under 11 game to an adjacent oval and moving Milo Cricket to Albert Park.

There was a great feel to the afternoon topped off by the First eleven getting up

to defeat the top side on the main oval.

The hard working committee deserves recognition too. Joel Rembach continued

as Treasurer and remains a fantastic support to me and the Club. He deservedly

won the Kurt Defris award for outstanding service to the club. It has been a

difficult year for Joel and the commitment he has shown to both the Club and his

family should not be underestimated. We wish only the best of health to Joel and

his family.

Brad Abrahams finally retires from the committee after six straight seasons as

Secretary – a fantastic achievement. Brad, safe and exciting journey to you and

we look forward to your return.

Yossi Herbst was also a deserving winner of the Kurt Defris award. He is just

such a willing and able worker and contributor for our club. It was great to see

him show his true capabilities on the field this season too.

Thanks too to Simon Fisher for his ongoing work as a conduit between the senior

and junior players and for his commitment and coaching at the preseason

academy. Our youngsters really look up to Shim and he is a great leader and

example to them.

We saw glimpses, albeit brief, of what Adam Lubitz’s contribution to the Club

could be on the field. We look forward to something off the field from him too.

Josh Sacks also put his hand up this season and between him, Adam, Yossi,

Aaron, Mark and a few others, I feel we are developing a real nucleus of a strong,

young committee to take the club into the next decade.

Finally, to our Vice President Joel Beebe, the club continues to be indebted to

you for the work you do behind the scenes. You continue to be my right hand

man as well as assisting the treasurer with his duties.

Page 8: 18 th Annual General Meeting - Home | Maccabi Australia

Page 8

So we look forward to next season…..as I said last season and will repeat here,

we continue to explore all options to make this Club a more attractive place for

Jewish youth to come and ply their trade. We continue to seek the best possible

support and facilities for our players be that grounds, curators, equipment or

coaches…that is our role. My wish list includes a home game or two in the City

of Glen Eira, a new Chairman of Selectors, a better curator, a scholarship fund

for fee relief, improvements to our mobile phone App and a premiership! So you

can see, we’re not satisfied and we continue to put our objectives out there!

Thanks to all of you for all of your support and encouragement. Thanks to my

wife Nicole for her support and understanding as I continue to take on more than

I should from a playing perspective, and to my boys, Brett and Dean, for their

enthusiasm coming with me to watch many games this season.

Let’s continue to work towards more growth and success in seasons to come.

1st XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Mark Soffer

I believe that the 2013/14 season will be seen as a launching pad to a First XI

premiership over the next 3 seasons. After finishing on the bottom of the ladder last

season there was in many ways only room for improvement for the side. Our

improvement was tangible on field (finishing 4th

and making the finals for the first

time in 6 seasons) and intangible off field as there was undoubtedly a positive and

significant paradigm shift in the culture and makeup of the club and core player

group as we transitioned to; for the first time in memory playing all First XI games

on Sunday.

In my first season as club and First XI Captain I feel incredibly appreciative to have

been given the level of support of both the committee and playing group and I

believe that the leadership and boldness of our committee over a number of years has

enabled us to be in the strong position we are in today off field and with a core group

of key players in our mid 20’s I believe that success at MACC will be improved and

sustained for a number of years to come.

The season began with limited success and a depleted playing group (due to

unavailability) losing our first two matches of the season which were both one day

games. We were then in significant trouble in our third game at 8/77 against the

lowly ranked Gunbower United; but then JJ Zimmet and Allan Goldstein stepped to

the crease and quite literally made history, setting a new MACC club partnership

record for the 9th

wicket of 160 and miraculously took the total to 241. From there

our season started heading in the right direction winning that game and taking

significant momentum to win 8 out of the remaining 10 games of the season.

Of the many notable individual and team performances over this period there is none

that stand out more than what’s become known as the ‘miracle at the lake’ that

occurred on the last Sunday before the Christmas break. After winning the toss and

batting we were simply embarrassed, bowled out for 44. Day 1 then ended with an

even spread of wickets to the bowlers and Sacred Heart all out for 153 with a lead of

109. The plan for Day 2 was simple, chase down their score and try and set them an

achievable target whilst giving ourselves enough overs to achieve the most elusive

result, a reverse outright victory. Day 2 started well and a majestic hard hitting

knock of 94 from Brad Majtlis put us in a position with 30 overs remaining in the

day to declare and give ourselves the opportunity to bowl them out and win. We did

so, and with time to spare; in just 21 overs Adam Klein and Benji Jones took 3

Page 10: 18 th Annual General Meeting - Home | Maccabi Australia

Annual Report 2013/14

Page 10

wickets each and David Fayman and Yossi Herbst took two each and thus achieve an

unthinkable and season defining result! Other notable individual performances

during the season included:

Brad Majtlis:

o Round 7: 94 vs Sacred Heart

o R8: 55 vs Gunbower United

o R10: 80 vs Sacred Heart

David Majtlis:

o R9: 87 vs South Yarra

o R6: 56 & 4/21 vs Burnley

o R10: 7/35 & 3/29 vs Sacred Heart

Benji Jones:

o R4: 60 vs Monash Gryphons

o R8: 5/12 vs Sacred Heart

Leon Jacobs:

o R4: 70 vs Monash Gryphons

Josh Sacks:

o R12: 87* vs Power House

Allan Goldstein:

o R3: 75 & 4/41 vs Gunbower United

JJ Zimmet:

o R3: 70 vs Gunbower United

As previously mentioned, our season ended in the semi final against Parkville when

we were unable to force a result by bowling them out and after 90 overs in the field

(of a 120 over day) it became clear that a result wasn’t able to be achieved and the

match was called a draw. As disappointing as the result in the semi final was, I am

incredibly proud of what we as a team were able to achieve this year. Our

improvement and consistency was particularly pleasing, with a very strong and

youthful core playing group committing to continuous improvement for the seasons

to come. I believe the core of this group will be playing the in first MACC First XI

Premiership team over the next few seasons.

Specifically, I look forward to the continued development and improvement of some

of the younger players; some of whom are yet to play First XI cricket to help deliver

our next premiership: Aaron Fetter, Adam Klein, Dovi Paltiel, Eli Adelist, Meir

New, Mark Shnider & Zev Aaron.

On a personal level I have thoroughly enjoyed my first season as Captain. I would

like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the entire playing group and

committee for their support and guidance over the course of the season. It was a

challenge and an extraordinary honour that I hope to be able to do again.

Yours in cricket,

Mark Soffer, 1st X1 Captain

Annual Report 2013/14

Page 13

2nd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Matt Aubor

The first game of the season pretty much typified the season that was 2013-14, its

levels of commitment to the side from those within the player group, and its

reliance on SOS calls to players outside of the squad (inclusive of Past Players).

The first game had representation from 4 retired players that were “begged” to

come and assist. It also provided games to a couple of others that would have

normally started in a lower XI.

Despite that, and the limited preparation of most within the side, it was a case of

“almost” with the team losing to South Yarra by only a handful of runs.

Unfortunately, most of the season was spent awaiting the return of “a full or

close to full” list of players.

The downside of this was the inability of the side to provide a suitable and

meaningful pathway to the First XI by way of consistent performances in the 2nd

XI putting pressure on those above to perform.

The biggest highlight, and only true example of this came in the form of Yossi

Herbst working hard and truly earning his opportunity to take this chance and

make his way through lower XI’s to be a fantastic contributor in the 1st XI, and

one of the playing group’s success stories of this season.

Ultimately the side only won a single game for the year. We were painfully close

on a handful of other occasions, but due to weakened XI’s, lack of continuity and

inconsistency in the playing group we fell short of the required mark most weeks.

Some will argue that not all games are played on Sunday’s and this led to the

resourcing issues of the 2nd XI, however those within the team and selection

process of the team understand that was only a small part of the truth.

There were some fantastic individual performances within the team throughout

the season however. What unfortunately didn’t occur was a string of them

together in the same innings or game. It was the isolated efforts, not the team

efforts that reflect the outcome of a solitary victory for 2013-14.

Despite the challenges faced over the year, there was still a great level of

camaraderie from the players that took the field, and a genuine thirst for the

contest. It felt at times that we were just a fraction off (and at other times more

Page 14: 18 th Annual General Meeting - Home | Maccabi Australia

Annual Report 2013/14

Page 14

than that) the level required to win the arm wrestle that is 150 overs of cricket

over 2 weeks.

I believe that there were genuinely 3 or 4 guys that finished in the 2’s that can

and should be pushing for a regular gig in the First XI. I hope that a couple more

emerge next season. I’d like to think that the players already know who they are.

(As I have pushed them pretty hard all season to get to the level required to apply

pressure onto the selection committee).

They should strive to kick the door down with regular, consistent performances

that ensure changes and not hope to gain a “fill in” spot due to attrition.

I hope all the guys start their pre-seasons early, and get ready for Round 1. Be

demanding of yourself in your preparation and performances moving forward.

The aim should always be to play the highest level of cricket you can (i.e. First

XI) and with that I wish all the players that played 2’s the past season, and within

the entire playing group a great season 2014-5.

Thanks for all of your efforts and participation this season.

and within their teams, and most importantly respect and enjoy the game, as well

as the company of their team mates and coaches.

Silver Arc 3rd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Peretz Schapiro

I would like to start by thanking Leon Jacobs and the MACC committee for

giving me the opportunity of captaining the 3rd XI. It was an honour to lead out

such a great group of guys on a weekly basis, and something which I feel very

proud being a part of.

The 3rd XI enjoyed a relatively successful 2013/14 season winning 13 games and

losing only 5 on the way to the semi-finals. Unfortunately we fell short in the

playoffs, losing to the competition's eventual winners ESO. Although considering

68 players played in the 3rd XI during the season, with each week’s team rarely

resembling the previous week’s side, it was a tremendous achievement to make it

that far!

Eli Adelist led the way with the bat with 263 runs at 37.57 which included two

50's, deservedly earning him the MCA's C Sunday batting award. Not only did

Eli have a strong season with the bat, his fielding around the ground was

something to behold, whether he was keeping wicket, in close or on the

boundary, you could always rely on Eli to take a brilliant catch or effect a quick

run-out. The look on opposition batsmen's faces after they had been dismissed by

a brilliant piece of work from Eli was priceless!

In the bowling department, it’s hard to go past Dovi Paltiel's 17 wickets at an

incredible average of 4.18 with a miserly economy rate of just 1.65! Astonishing,

especially considering he only played 5 games for the 3rd XI.

Some of the highlights of the year included:

Meir New taking the final wicket against Parkville with just 3 minutes to go

in the day, in just his second game.

Ari Ritz's blistering 87 against East Malvern Tooronga including 6 massive

sixes.

Eli Paneth rearguard batting against Burnley, saving us from outright defeat.

Ian Ludski's hat-trick against Toorak-Prahran - all 3 wickets classic yorkers.

With wickets falling all around him, and the team in serious trouble at 5/25,

Justin Tyler's 48* out of a total of 103 kept us in the game vs. East Malvern

Tooronga.

Eli Adelist's 68, chasing Toorak-Prahran's 140.

Page 18: 18 th Annual General Meeting - Home | Maccabi Australia

Annual Report 2013/14

Page 18

Scoring 8/210 against Bentleigh, by far our highest total of the year, with

almost all batsmen contributing.

Our tail helping us recover from 6/21 against Toorak-Prahran to post a

competitive 99 and then going on to win the match by 13 runs.

Josh Jones' 43 runs and 5 wickets against Parkville in his last game of the

year.

In my opinion the 3rd XI's highlight of the year was our win against ESO in

round 18. To put things in perspective, a few weeks earlier we had lost to ESO by

over 100 runs, so going back to Scammell Reserve to play them again was

always going to be a huge challenge. Batting first we managed to put together

150 thanks largely to an even 50 from Steven Lustig and some other handy

contributions. The feeling was that it might just be a bit below par, but

nevertheless we remained positive, hoping

that we could keep the pressure on them with

some tight bowling.

Daniel Wein gave us the start we hoped for

dismissing ESO's opener, thanks to an

unbelievable catch from WK Ben Machlin

diving in front of first slip. From there

though, the game seemed to be getting away

from us, with ESO cruising at 1/37. Enter

Nochum Paltiel, who with a deadly spell of

accurate fast bowling tore through the ESO

batting order taking 5 wickets (all unassisted), shattering a stump in the process!

For the record we ended up winning by 24 runs.

One of the biggest positives of the season was the emergence of some of our

younger players, particularly Meir New and Nochum Paltiel, who at just 16 and

15 respectively, will no doubt major contributors to the club’s future success.

I want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to everyone that played in the 3rd XI

this year, not only did we play a successful brand of cricket, there was always a

great atmosphere amongst the playing group. It’s a testament to the great culture

and comradeship which continues to develop at the club off the field, which will

only translate to enhanced performances on the field in 2014/15.

Looking forward to what I'm sure will be another successful season next year.

Silver ARC 4th XI REPORT

The Silver Arc 4th XI had a difficult season with four wins, one draw and

fifteen losses placing the team at the bottom of the MCA D Sunday grade

ladder. An inability to maintain stability within the playing list contributed to

the disappointing results. A club record 80 players represented the 4th XI over

the twenty games, reflecting the fact that each week almost half the team

were new to the side.

The season commenced positively with an inspiring victory against East

Malvern Tooronga. A heroic 53* from Samuel Walsh and 30 from Ariel

Lashansky saw the side post a competitive total of 130. Lashansky backed up

his batting with the ball taking 4/20, helping us bowl out the opposition for

only 73. After round 1 we were sitting pretty on top of the ladder! However,

the phrase “no prize for being an October champion’ wasn’t coined for

nothing.

Debutant Ian Ludski’s 4/7 in Round 2 versus Canterbury wasn’t enough to

stave off defeat and Round 3 saw us forfeit as university and VCE exams

kicked in and many players were unavailable for selection. Justin Tyler’s

classy 50 on debut in Round 4 was one of the season’s highlights and his

continued form throughout the season makes him a player to watch in future

seasons. Unfortunately, he scored over half the side’s total of 89 that day

which was never going to be a large enough total to defend.

Pleasingly we were back to winning form in Rounds 5 and 6 played as back-

to-back T20 games in one day. In the first game we scored 120 off 20 overs

thank to some lusty hitting from David Ellinghaus (35) and Ariel Ritz (26). 3

wickets to Simon Fisher lead the tight bowling attack restricting the

opposition to 84. In the second game, we also batted first, posting 98 off 18

overs thank to Josh Jones’ 37. The psychological damage had been done

earlier in the day as Bentleigh could only manage 73 in reply. Ian Ludski was

the pick of the bowlers taking 3/22.

Page 22

Our only other victory for the season came before the mid-season break with

a stunning win versus the highly fancied Monash Gryphons. Some

exceptionally tight bowling from Jeremy Herz (4/10) and Yakir Havin (3/10)

restricted the students to a lowly 59 from their allotted 40 overs. In reply, a

blazing 40 from rising star Nochom Paltiel led us to victory in only 23 overs.

At the New Year’s break we were sitting mid-table and looking forward to a

challenging second half of the season. Unfortunately, continued player

rotations due to holidays contributed to the side’s winless second half of the

season.

Despite the team’s form there were some notable performances as the heat

rose in January and February. These included Jason Stone’s 58 versus East

Malvern Tooronga and Adam Shapiro’s career high 66 and Josh Gelfand’s 56

versus Thornbury Turf Strokers. Shapiro and Gelfand’s batting contributed to

the side’s season high total of 205 which remarkably was insufficient to get

over the line in Round 16.

Special mention must be made to Ian Jones who captained the side for most

of the first half of the season. His commitment and passion to the club is only

matched by that of his sons who are in the early stages of what will likely be

a Jones dynasty at the club. Jamie Hyams brought his experience to the

captaincy in the second half of the season and his on-field leadership was

greatly appreciated by the relatively young side.

In addition stand-in captains Adam Rapoport, Jeremy Seigel, Eli Paneth,

Simon Fisher and Barry Kave all stepped up to the challenge when asked by

the club in difficult circumstances. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
