N AMRIA through the Geospatial Information Systems Management Branch (GISMB) and in coordination with other agency branches conducted map technology presentations and tour of mapping facilities during the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Sinaglahi” Class of 2015 Interdisciplinary Tour held on 05 September 2013. The visit to NAMRIA was part of the itinerary of the PMA “Sinaglahi” Class of 2015 Interdisciplinary Tour which was held on 02-06 September 2013. The contingent is composed of 177 Second Class cadets, 19 of whom are female cadets, and 37 faculty members and support personnel. To date, the “Sinaglahi” Class of 2015 is the fifth batch of PMA cadets to visit the agency. Deputy Administrator (DA) Efren P. Carandang welcomed the PMA cadets and faculty members and delivered the welcome message in behalf of Administrator Peter N. Tiangco. At the onset, he expressed gratitude to the Academy’s efforts in considering NAMRIA as an important part of the learning experience of the PMA cadets. He briefed the visitors on some of the significant projects of the agency such as topographic base mapping, charting and delineation of maritime boundaries, geospatial information management, and thematic mapping. He also underscored in his message the importance of geospatial information and its applications in planning strategic and intelligence operations of the military. DA Carandang expressed the hope that PMA cadets will be armed with mapping skills and the latest technologies on how to gather, extract, and analyze geospatial information/intelligence from the maps, remote sensing imageries, geographic databases, and geographic information systems. Activities for the NAMRIA study visit included audio-visual showing of the NAMRIA profile and the map making process followed by the tour of facilities and technology presentations on map production. For the facility tour, the PMA cadets together with the faculty members were divided into six groups. Geospatial Information Services Division (GISD) staff served as facility tour guides. They were: (Group 1) Arlene M. Balauro and Joseph C. Estrella; (Group 2) Elinor C. Delos Reyes and Dante A. Rosette Jr.; (Group 3) Xenia R. Andres and Vener C.Taguba; (Group 4) Aileen A. Argente and Marco C. Ilagan; (Group 5) Rina Grace G. Gersalia and Jeff N. Hunt; and (Group 6) Annie A. Almuete and Gilbert C. Agno. GISMB Assistant Director Febrina E. Damaso also ensured the smooth conduct of the study tour. The areas visited and their respective technical presenters were Photogrammetry Division, Engrs. Roger G. De Luna and Ma. Victoria B. Abordo; PageNET and Data Control Center, Engrs. Charisma Victoria C. Cayapan and Hennesy R. Marohom; Cartography Division, Engrs. Trinidad R. Garbo and Sheila P. Eugenio; Reprography and Printing Division (RPD), RPD Officer-In-Charge Celedonio J. Pili and Noel A. Besana; NAMRIA Museum, Ltjg. Rommel M. Correa, Jerry P. Evangelista, and Jose R. Villanueva; and NAMRIA Geomatics Training Center (NGTC), Alvin F. Laurio. In his closing remarks, GISMB Director John Santiago F. Fabic said that the interdisciplinary tour was timely as the agency had just finished its Strategic Planning Project. He cited Partnership Development Program as one of the strategic initiatives under the project and also partnership with stakeholders, which includes the academe, as a key program stakeholder. He also mentioned the Geospatial Information Program to be launched in October, with the vision of current and accurate geospatial information being readily available online to the widest potential users. NAMRIA information kits and copies of the group photo of the NAMRIA key officials together with the PMA cadets and faculty members were given to Col. Joseph P. Villanueva, professor of the PMA General Staff College and head of the PMA contingent. In response, a PMA picture token referred to as “PMA portrait” was given to GISMB Director Fabic in grateful appreciation of the support extended to the PMA “Sinaglahi” Interdisciplinary Tour. Ms. Celeste E. Barile, Ph.D. of the GISD served as the emcee during the program. GISMB NGTC MGB Reprography and Prinng Division NAMRIA Museum Jennie C.
