welcome to the 17th aapa International Flexible pavements Conference roads of the Future | Embracing Disruption Our industry is on the verge of profound change. The future of transport and the role played by roads in the movement of people and goods face unprecedented pressure and potential for disruption.

This conference brings together global and local leaders of the flexible pavements sector to discuss and meet the challenges of the future.

You will hear how technology is transforming the way we build roads, how we will use the mountains of data being generated to improve construction outcomes, how we will ensure environmental sustainability – and much more.

With over 80 submitted papers this year’s technical program will be the biggest and the best in AAPA conference history. The calibre of speakers coupled with the participation of industry leaders promises a jam-packed event distributing a wealth of knowledge for the purpose of growing and further innovating our practice.

The exhibition showcases over 40 organisations, 321 tonnes of equipment, paper authors and their posters at the e-poster sessions on Sunday and Tuesday, plus it hosts all your catering needs including the COLAS refreshment hour Monday 4.30pm-5.30pm and the SAMI refreshment hour, Tuesday 3.30pm-4.30pm.

Whether you are an AAPA member, industry stakeholder, partner, supplier or student take this chance to network with your peers and celebrate your success.

Have a fantastic conference, enjoy the social events and celebrate the industry achievements at the AAPA booth 28 and this year's National Gala Dinner and Industry Awards.

mondaykeynote - global trends bitumen production and supply – jonathan pegler

Puma Bitumen’s Jonathan Pegler, Global Head of Supply and Trading, presents on the trends in global bitumen production and supply.

He will outline changes in the bitumen supply chain over the past 20 years and the drivers for the global reduction in the number of refineries. What are the new realities for the industry and how do bitumen suppliers assure the continued quality of bitumen?

Pegler’s wealth of experience as Global Co-head of Crude Trading and Head of Oil Asia for Singapore-based Trafigura and nine years at BP makes this presentation a fascinating insider’s perspective on the developments that have shaped our industry.

major projects and future challenges for airport pavements

This Keynote will provide an overview of the significant growth the aviation sector has experienced in recent years and what that has meant for aeronautical infrastructure, such as runway, taxiway and apron pavements. There will also be an overview of the most significant pavement projects underway or planned at some of Australia’s major airports.

The presentation will also cover the ‘Airfield Pavement Essentials’ document that the Australian Airports Association recently produced for its members, which is designed to provide guidance on pavement basics, design, construction and maintenance at airports. Some of the challenges facing airport pavements in the years ahead, particularly in relation to larger aircraft and higher tyre pressures, will be explored along with opportunities in technological innovation.

Egbert was appointed Technical Director of the European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA) in 2001. In 2009, he became Director and in 2013 Secretary General of EAPA. He has been involved in the organisation of many conferences, including four Eurasphalt & Eurobitume congresses. He is a member of several European standardisation and other international committees.

sustainability in procurement - session and workshop

The 'Embedding sustainability in procurement' session leads with an overview of current industry position, then an infrastructure funders broader vision across sustainable asset provision and societal impacts. After a status review from ISCA on Australian sustainability assessment systems, is a review of international practice and lessons from Europe. This provides the back drop of the follow-up workshop session which will explore options, outcomes, priorities and timeframes to embrace the sustainable purchasing expectations and capabilities of the road building industry.

Key findings of the workshop will be put into practice through the AAPA National Safety and Sustainability Committee.

perpetual and heavy duty pavement technologyIndustry and road agencies have invested heavily in efforts to optimise cost effectiveness of flexible pavements over the past couple of years. As a result perpetual pavement solutions are now actively considered for major projects and significant pavement thickness reductions are being achieved through the use of high modulus asphalt (EME2). The latest developments in terms of the implementation of EME2 around the country and perpetual pavement design will be shared at the conference.

Topics addressed by international and local experts include:> Sustainability> Performance based design> Innovative asphalt mix technology> Best practice use of RAP> Warm mix asphalt > Remediation of failed concrete pavements

Adam Hand will be sharing his experience in the remediation of end-of-life concrete pavements including techniques used for the rehabilitation of concrete pavements in various states in the US. He will also discuss thickness design for asphalt pavements over failed concrete pavements e.g. crack, seat and overlay.

resilient regional and local government roadsIn this session you will hear from experts on how to improve the resilience of the road network against flooding by using the latest in bituminous stabilisation technology and best practice examples in sprayed seals.

Topics addressed by international and local experts include:> The continued drive to use more warm mix asphalt > Pavement preservation strategies to combat oxidation aging of bituminous surfacings > Success stories from local councils with lessons learnt

Miles will provide an update on how Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads plans and responds to the increased risks associated with extreme environmental events with more resilient road infrastructure. A revised roads and pavement resilience framework has been established which merges program management with value for money outcomes, using extended design and delivery standards. This framework facilitates the prioritisation of investment and through the whole-of-life approach, links to the additional service level of resilience improvement, such as shoulder widening, and tied to the the available funding. The use of this approach will be explained in the wake of the 2017 Cyclone Debbie.

wednesday

keynote: miles vAss

Deputy Director-General – Infrastructure Management and Delivery Division QTMR

Miles oversees the delivery of the integrated program of infrastructure projects and the maintenance and operation of the state-controlled road network.

Miles recently led the Queensland Government’s reconstruction program of transport infrastructure following the unprecedented natural disasters. Beginning in 2011, the four-year program delivered more than $6.4 billlion in reconstruction works statewide, achieved savings of more than $400 million, finished six months ahead of schedule and involved reconstructing an unprecedented 8741km of roads across the state. It was the largest reconstruction program of its kind in Queensland’s history.

Tyre Stewardship Australia is a government supported initiative to improve outcomes for the 51 million end-of-life tyres generated each year. The roads industry is a primary contributor to the generation of waste tyres. The industry can utilise this substantial resource to deliver better roads and environmental outcomes and create a true ‘circular economy’.

We can offer our customers mobile machine solutions for road construction and road rehabilitation, plants for mining and processing minerals or recycling material and for the production of asphalt.

The five brands are well established with the average age since they were foundered being over 125 years.

The quality and technical innovation embodied in all Wirtgen Group brands and machines has resulted in recognition by global experts through many international design and innovation awards and widespread acknowledgement of industry leading products.

To support these products and the customers that use them requires a special approach to resourcing and delivery of aftersales service. At a local level, by specialists.

Strong and convincing local presence

The WIRTGEN GROUP is represented in Australia by its wholly owned sales and service subsidiary Wirtgen Australia. Being dedicated to the specialised product lines of its five brands enables Wirtgen to focus on providing end to end solutions to suit individual customer’s requirements. We do this by having local and factory trained service technicians operating from bases in five states who understand the machines and models sold in Australia to you, our Customers. These resources are further supported by extensively factory trained product and application speciailists that represent each brand. Finally these local specialists have direct contact with their counterparts in each of the German factories.

This multilayered approach enables us to respond quickly to the needs of any Customer. We believe aftersales response is more than just getting a qualified general mechanical resource to your machine, but rather giving you access to highly trained technicians that specialise in and have extensive understanding of your specific model. We also extend this depth of local knowledge to offer you and your operators a multiple of training options from basic machine operation to detailed applications training both locally and back at the German factories.

Market-leading products, excellent service and tried and tested quality standards will give you the confidence you need in your competitive environment. The WIRTGEN GROUP’s successful long standing brands will keep you safely on the road of success.
