Paul Robinson, Have run several startups of my own in the services space,

and helped numerous business get launched as a technology/developer

consultant.

My top 3 guesses would be energy (specifically oil), raw material refinement (steel,

plastics) and logistics. Would be interested to see the top 20 we can come up with

though.

I would have thought mining would make it into the top twenty. And on top of that,

metal trading (especially rare earth metals) would probably be in there too.

ReasoniEveryone tends to need raw materials and in a recession if people aren't

trading metals for manufacture they are probably trading gold as people look for a

safe harbour when the money markets become volatile.

Some of the most profitable businesses are in the Technology space. Some of the

most profitable businesses are the one's that are in the Daily Deals Space. As seen

with the growth of Groupon and its competitors, this business area is growing

exponentially and is also extremely profitable.

Another industry that is very profitable is the virtual goods space. Most of the

growth in this space has been through the exponential growth of casual games

played on Facebook, the iPhone, or on Android. This industry is highly profitable.

One of my friends owns a startup in San Francisco that makes casual and virtual

games for the three platforms mentioned above. He told me that they were

completely profitable on day one. Never before have their been businesses that are

so profitable.

These two business areas were the ones that came to my mind the second I

thought of profitability. Not only are they profitable, but revenues for both of those

industries are currently growing exponentially.
