CALVES (178) Starts 10.00am AUCTIONEERS: TIM HECTOR 07818 056 049 CHARLIE COLEMAN: 07494 588 013 Calves continue to fly here in Frome, a trade just as hot as today’s scorching weather with Friesians in particular demand.

CONTINENTAL BULLS TO £325/HEIFERS TO £290 Trade still racing along for all grades. Best Blue bulls today from regular supporters Wardour Farm with a superb sort to £385. The rest falling into the medium to small still a flyer with all £200 - £300+. A super run of Limousin bulls from Pete Turner raced to £345 with plenty around £300. Heifers from the same home to £202, £195 and £185. Heifers continue to be an easy sell seeing Blues from Wardour and Denhay Farms to £225. Very few below £170. Certainly a trade to make use of. Simmentals still very popular with Bulls to £345 from Padfield & Dyke, with heifers sailing to £185 from NAC Taylor.

NATIVE BULLS TO £385/NATIVE HEIFERS TO £225 A quality show of calves met yet again a quality trade. Best Angus from NF Clothier saw bulls top at £325 and heifers to £290. All best calves to £200+ with even the smallest to £150. Similar story for the heifers with everything of best quality close to £100 and still the smallest sailing past £100. All grades sell to a premium here at Frome. Herefords continue to be wanted, best bulls to £320 twice from Padfield & Dyke, with all smallest sailing past £100. Medium calves continue to soar with all £170+. Heifers still very dear, the best to £165 from the Perretts of Blandford, no best sorts forward but this did not stop the smaller grades being competed for.

FRIESIAN TO £140 FLECKVIEH £190 What a trade! Several comments that today’s Friesians would be the dearest in

some years! With over 10 calves over £100 we saw a roaring trade with rearing

sorts to £140 from Y Farms, with a quality run from the Newman’s of Salisbury

averaging a marvellous £127. An all in average of £93.15 shows what a trade

the small and medium calves were. More are needed to satisfy demand.

The winner of the £25 for the top price Native sired bull

under 41 days sponsored by Howard & Sons – Kubota, was

an Angus to £325 from NF Clothier, Ston Easton. Next week

the £25 sponsored prize will be for the top price Continental

sired heifer.

Farming Community Network (FCN) volunteers regularly attend local livestock markets and whilst we cannot be present at sales currently, our helpline is still open from 7am to 11pm every day, staffed by people who

understand farming.

FCN is a charity and voluntary organisation that helps farmers to stay resilient. We provide practical and pastoral support to those experiencing

difficulties in England and Wales.

During these challenging times we are encouraging everyone to think about their own physical and mental health and that of their families and

staff.

We can help with contingency planning against the backdrop of the Corona virus outbreak and our FarmWell website (www.farmwell.org.uk)

offers a wealth of free information about managing change and maintaining personal wellbeing.

The FCN helpline can be reached on 03000 111 999 or via email at

[email protected]. Confidentiality is assured.

DO NOT wish your name or age to be on it.

A “FLA Cheer Us Up” Certificate will be sent to every entry!

So have fun – get drawing!

Thank you to Abbey Robinson, Aged 11, for her lovely pictures!

Chaplain’s Weekly News 18th May A prayer for Rogation, a time to ask God for his blessing for our farmers in

this season of planting and growth.

We come before you our God and Sustainer, remembering that you are our Creator

and the source of all being. Out of your love the universe was born. From primordial

darkness you put in place all that is needed for growth and saw that it was good.

You have put this world into our hands: may we recognise your Spirit within it,

disturbing and challenging us to care for creation, for the weak and the deprived.

Lord we remember that we are called by you to nourish the earth and its diversity of

life, to share the gifts you have given, with one another and with the poor of the

world, Amen.
