Language tip!the phrase for What is your name? – Kak vas zavoot? – means literally How you they call? the answer, My name is . . . – M’in’a zavoot . . . – means Me they call and then you add your name. so My name is Ol’ga will be: M’in’a zavoot Ol’ga.

Language tip!did you know that each Russian person has three names? First they have their given name, like Ol’ga. sometimes this given name will have several different forms, in the same way that we use affectionate nicknames in english. For example, Ol’ga might also be called O’lich’ka. a Russian’s second name is called a patronymic name, which is their father’s given name with a special ending added on. in this conversation Ol’ga’s patronymic is Bar’eesuvna so we know that her father is called Bar’ees. thirdly each Russian will also have a family name like Papof for a man and Papova for a woman.

Language tip!it’s important to know that the two words you use to say waiter mean young man: Muladoi ch’ilav’ek!don’t worry if your waiter is not young. you still use the same words! if you have a waitress, you will call her: D’evooshka.

Language tip!you will notice that in Russian you do not need to use a word for the or a. so if you want to say the bread is tasty, you just say the words for bread – tasty: hl’ep – fkoosnyi.

Language tip!did you notice that one matrioshka is matr’oshka, but more than one matrioshka is matr’oshki.Changing the end of a word to i is like adding an s in english to show that there is more than one. so in english we have theatre and theatres. in Russian we have t’atr and t’atry.

Language tip!if you wanted to say Oh, that’s not expensive! put n’i in front of the describing word. so that’s not expensive is Oi, etu n’idorugu.

Language tip!did you notice the little word for may I? – Mozhnu? this is a really useful word as you can use it to ask permission to do almost anything.
