General information

• The capital of Haiti is Port-au-Prince and the size is: 27 750 km2 and 75% of them are mountains.

• French and Creole are considered as the official languages of Haiti.

• Population approximatively 10-11 millions.

1-Global situation of the Haitian population

• The population of Haiti is relatively young .

• More than the half are less than 21 years, less than 15 years represent 36,5%.

• From 15 to 64 years represent 58.5% ,while 65 years up are 5,1% according to the Haitian Institute of statistique and information.

• Youth is define as people who are 15-24 years as it was defined in the U.N

2-The employment situation of Haiti

60 % of the active population are in unemployment.

This population consists of:

54,4% are 15years and more

47,7 are more than ten years and more.

3-The youth employment of HAITI

• 35% of young people from 15 to 24 are unemployment . They are 21% of the global population.

• 200000 are 15 years every year.

• 1/3 are in business , 1/3 in agriculture and 1/3 in working poor.

4- Haitian youth policy and action plan

• In the past until the end of 1980, there were some programs directed by the MARNDR as: farm-schools , vocational school, average school of agriculture, some centers for the women and the 4C movement .

• Actually those activities are directed by some non governmental organization but the finality is different than the MARNDR. For this reason MARNDR in collaboration with some organizations, is working on the reopening of those school and activities.

Other perspective

The ministry has a partnership with PROMODEV(promotion for development). They work in pairs in some project like:

• Agriculture briefing :for the most educated people.

• Allo Agro : a radio broadcast that discuss about the agricultural program and problem in Haiti.

• Youth commitment: an educational project.

• Koze Plante: is to go to the rural areas and have a chat with the farmers about the agricultural problems

Some actions

5-The main challenge for youth in agriculture

a)Land accesGenerally the best way to have access to land is by succession, but the law of succession is not appropriated. Because most of the time the quantity will become too small after making the plots.

b) Credit accessCredit for agriculture is very difficult.

c) Vocational education access.In Haiti there are a lot of vocational school, but the access is difficult. The youth cannot pay the tuitions. There are too expensive.

5-The main challenge for youth in agriculture

d)Organisation producers.

It is possible , they can easily join producers’organisation. It depends on
