    Graffiti attacks hit ratepayers

Cleaning up graffiti costs each Nelsonian $2.38 a year, more than double the cost to Wel-lingtonians.Alec Louverdis of Nelson City Council says the cost of fix-ing graffiti in the city has risen steadily over the past five years and is now at an all-time high. It costs ratepayers around $100,000 per year to clean up graffiti and another $100,000 to fix vandalism. The figures come as the city counts the cost of another at-tack last week in Tahunanui. The culprit has not been caught say Nelson Police and the own-ers of fences along Tahunanui Dr and Annesbrook Dr say they are fed up with having to clean up the mess left by oth-ers.

In February Alec reported to council the impact continued vandalism to council-owned parks, toilets and fences was having on costs. He says the cost to rectify vandalism is 65 per cent of the councils entire repair bill.In Wellington graffiti costs each of its residents around $1 a year, in Dunedin residents fork out just 15 cents each year but in our biggest city, Auck-landers pay about $3.20 for the repair work.Police say they receive around 150 reports of graffiti each year with that figure peaking in 2008 at 259. In the first quarter of this year 24 cases have been reported, compared with last years 22.Nelson Bays Area Commander

Inspector Steve Greally says police are working on the is-sue through its prevention first policy.Youth is one of the key ar-eas we are working on and they tend to be the age group that cause graffiti. We want to avoid putting them on the path to future crime so figur-

ing out what causes them to do it is a focus.A resident on Tahunanui Dr who had his fence spray-painted last week told Nelson Weekly it wasnt the first time but it is hard to catch them in the act. They do it at night and with the traffic noise I never hear it so we just have to try and clean it off the next day. Its a real pain.

Nelsons draft long term plan which sets out the direction for our city is now out for public consultation.Mayor Aldo Miccio says the draft plan defines the work council plans to do

over the next 10 years and council needs input from the citys residents. There are so many important issues to discuss and decisions to make. A ten-year plan presents many opportunities

and trade-offs. The draft Long Term Plan proposes an average rates increase in years one to seven of 4.89 per cent and years eight to ten of 2.11 per cent.

The owner of a boutique shop selling UK prod-ucts for ex-pats in Richmond has been threat-ened with legal action over his selection of breakfast cereals. Two weeks ago representatives of Sanitarium walked into English Bobs Emporium in central Richmond demanding it stop selling Weetabix, an English alternative to Weet-Bix. Owner Bob Wren says the pair from the Aus-tralian-owned food company threatened legal action if he did not comply, because they felt Weetabix was too similar to their own Weet-Bix and that it must come off the shelf immediately. English Bob says he is furious at the threat and says Sanitarium is just bullying his small business. They said it sounds too much like Weet-Bix. But its a totally different product. English people ask me to get this in, says Bob. They told me they had stopped all of the North

Island English corner shops from selling it be-cause they were supplying them to the super-markets.He says that he sells only two boxes of Weetabix a week, adding the fact that they were double the price of Weet-bix suggested that customers only bought Weetabix for sentimental reasons. If they dont want Weetabix going massive then I can understand that. But Im a boutique English

shop selling English stuff. I sell one or two a week. This is corpo-rate bullying. The Weetabix Food Company was in-corporated in 1932, four years after New Zealand launched Weet-Bix. However, the original creator of the popular breakfast item can be traced to both companies.Sanitarium general manager Pierre van

Heerden was out of the country and could not be reached for comment. But Bob says he will continue to sell Weetabix despite the threat of legal action and is planning to tell his story on a YouTube video.

The job of drilling 125 rock bolts into the cliff above Rocks Rd is progressing well says NZTA, with full use of Rocks Rd due at the end of May.Abseilers and crew working from platforms have been working since last month to drill the bolts into the cliff face in an effort to secure it from further dam-age following last Decembers floods, which caused the road to close for several days.New Zealand Transport Agen-cy, which owns the road, says the work involves drilling steel columns into the cliff face to hold it together, steel mesh is then placed over the bolts, and concrete sprayed over the sur-face to seal the rock face and reduce the effects of weather-ing. Around 400 square metres of netting will also be used and drainage will be improved so the cliff face will be less prone to becoming waterlogged. So far 80 of the bolts have been drilled and fixed in place. The remaining 45 rock bolts will be completed by next week says NZTA regional operations manager Mark Owen. We will start placing the steel mesh this week, and the concrete will be sprayed onto the surface during the first week of May.

We expect to complete this work by the end of May.Mark says once this phase of work is complete, the shipping containers and most of the existing road cones and barriers will be removed, enabling Rocks Rd to be reinstated to two lanes and the existing cycle ways reopened.

The next phase of work, in-volving soil nailing and rock-fall netting to future proof the cliff, is currently being investi-gated. Work is expected to be completed later this year, and will not restrict the road width during the day, so effects on motorists and cyclists will be minimal.Mark says the work has taken longer than expected but will give a more comprehensive and secure solution in the long term. Weve been working on de-signs to stabilise the cliffs, and our investigations have shown that the areas that need special attention are larger than origi-nally envisaged. Its crucial

we do a thorough job to ensure the safety of motorists and the long-term resilience of the route.Hiway Geotechnical have been contracted to do the repairs. NZTA would not say what the project was likely to cost.

NEWS IN BRIEFFIRE CHIEF PASSES: The Stoke Vol-unteer Fire Brigade is in mourning after the death of its chief Kerry Mark Ferris, 52, last Wednesday. Kerry was killed in a heavy roller accident in the Maitai Valley. Police say he was thrown from a 12 tonne roller after it rolled down a bank onto the river bed and crushed him in the accident. He died at the scene.

BEST BEACHES: The Abel Tasman Na-tional Park has been nominated as Lead-ing Beach Destination in Australasia in the World Travel Awards. It will compete for the title against such icons as the Far Norths Ninety Mile Beach, Aitutaki in the Cook Islands and Bondi Beach in Sydney. If selected as the winner, the Abel Tasman will then compete for the title of Leading Beach Destination in the World, at the Grand Final in New Delhi in December 2012..

BIRDS HALT FLIGHTS: Unsettled birds from neighbouring Sand Island caused flight disruption at Nelson Airport over the Easter weekend. CEO Kaye McNabb reported that two incidents of people dis-turbing large numbers of oyster catchers from the Sand Island to the west of the airport. The disturbed bird population swirled over and landed on the airfield making conditions temporarily unsafe for aircraft. Both incidents were man made, the first involving a kayaker going ashore, the second involving two people with a small dog arriving from a small outboard.

Mayor says my fault over flyerTasman mayor Richard Kempthorne has admitted fault in the anti-amal-gamation flyer the Tasman District Council sent to its ratepayers two weeks ago, throwing the result of this months poll in doubt.Richard says he will pay back the $3088.14 the flyer cost but Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, also the representative of electors for the issue, says if current poll for amalgama-tion falls over, the courts could rule to overturn it or declare it invalid.Last week the Auditor Gen-eral ruled that the flyer, sent out in the TDCs Newsline newsletter was in breach of the councils resolution not to spend any money promoting or opposing the proposal to unite the Tasman and Nelson councils. The Auditor General has taken the view when read as a whole the flyer was not neutral and opposes amal-gamation. I have accepted that view and will accordingly make good the loss incurred, says Richard.

Aldo says the illegal and biased flyer throws the result of the poll in doubt. It is very disappointing that the TDC felt it necessary to play an undemocratic game by distrib-uting negative and biased propa-ganda, says Aldo. "I accept mayor

Kempthornes apology and hope that people who have not voted yet will look be-yond the bias and read the official Local Government Commissions reorganisa-tion scheme and judge it on its own merits. However, if the result goes against amalgamation in Tasman he says he will not dispute it, although if ten residents in Tasman do, it

will be up to the courts to decide whether the result will stand. The poll on whether or not the two councils should amalgamate closes this Friday. A majority of voters in both regions need to vote for the proposal issued by the Local Gov-ernment Commission earlier this year for it to go ahead.

    Richard Kempthorne.

Complex searches for talentFashion Island has started a search to find Nel-sons star talent. This Thursday, Friday and Sat-urday some of Nelsons budding young acts will be wowing audiences from 12pm at Fashion Island.Entrants can register and perform on the day and for those who come along at 12pm for registration, there is a fash-ion show to distract from any nervous tension (for parents and performers alike). Saturday is all business as the finalists will be taking part in their very own Nelsons Got Talent. There are two cat-egories; 9-13 and 14-18 year olds, with $1000 dollars being given away as prize money.Susan Matz, Fashion Island manager says she

is excited about a huge range of acts including some she hopes will be a bit unexpected, eve-rything from juggling to uni-cycling and yodel-

ling. Its open to whatever people are super talented at. If they are dancing or sing-ing or doing poems, thats great. I dont want to limit it because kids are talent-ed in many different ways, says Susan.Weve just got so many gifted kids in our community so its just a great bit of holiday fun for everyone. "It will be a great experience for the performers and also family and friends

who come along to support them. Im really looking forward to it, its going to be a blast, says Susan.

Q: I asked to put a gift on layby at a local shop. The assistant asked meto sign a receipt and said I would be charged a layby fee. I told her that I thought that layby did not incur fees. I was assured that this was normal. What do you think?

A: When you ask to put an item on layby, an agreement is made between you and the retailer. You will be required to pay 10-15% deposit, and agree to pay a certain amount every week until the item is paid off and you can take the item away from the shop. There is no fee for this. The retailer can ask to charge storage if the item is large but must ask you first. You can ask the retailer to reimburse this fee.

Nelsons Womens Lifestyle Expo was the perfect excuse for a girls day out, a chance for women to enjoy and pamper themselves, while taking in the latest trends and styles, say organisers. Trafalgar Centre was transformed last weekend into a womens wonderland. From the moment you walked through the doors there was a feast of interactive sites, showcasing the latest prod-ucts or cutting edge fashion. There were new hairstyles to be had, makeovers and manicures. A wellness group doing mas-sage was also one of the many companies doing seminars and you know its a success when the organisers and Expo staff are putting the dem-onstrations into practice. The girls in the office

went to a seminar to learn Indian head massage, and we have all been treating each other in the office, says Christine Woodhouse, the event or-ganiser.It was such a lovely weekend. Lots of people from Nelson came and had a fantastic time at the expo. It was very well attended, and I think the numbers were up a little bit on last year, because the weather was great and people came out and thoroughly enjoyed it, says Christine. The goal of the expo was to inform women about some new products and trends coming out. It was about creating a nice environment for wom-en to have a girls day out and just thoroughly enjoy themselves, says Christine.

One of our stores is having a birthday. Barkers turns 40 this year! As many of you know Barkers holds a special place for me, and the many customers I got to know.On Saturday, a shopping exhibition was apparently needed and our daughter, who is currently home from varsity for the holidays, decided that she and her dad needed to do a Barkers shop. New jeans and stylish shirts were purchased and both were commenting to me later how incredibly helpful the manager Lynley was, making the whole experience genuinely enjoyable.Barkers is proud to be the official formalwear supplier to the All Blacks. With superb quality merino suiting, two-ply cotton shirts and fine silk ties, you can dress how the team wear, when theyre off the field. Make sure that you drop by and have a chat with Lynley and her team, and check out the latest arrivals of shirts, trousers and fabulous winter jackets. It stuck out like a sore thumb. I knew what it was straight away and after two weeks of ignoring it on the kitchen table I finally opened the envelope and cast my amalga-mation vote.Frankly, Im sick of hearing about amalga-mation, sick of the TDC v NCC hate and sick of the pettiness surrounding it. I mean pulling out billboards? Illegal flyers? Pub-lic spats between elected officials? It just goes on and I think most of us are over it.I cant count how many stories Ive written, edited or read on the subject so when the envelope arrived I couldnt be bothered, Id had enough, amalgamation it was now in-vading my home!

Despite my tardiness, I never really con-templated not voting but I just didnt want to face it, not then anyway. But the err, lets call it passion the passion shown by the aforementioned officials meant I could not live with myself if I didnt. Call me a weirdo, but the effort both the pro and anti camps put in to the whole thing couldnt be ignored, it would be cruel if we were all so apathetic that none of us bothered to vote after all that effort.Through my job Ive spent a fair bit of time with most of the players in the amalgama-tion debate and seen a new side to a few

of them. Who would have thought Rich-ard Kempthorne could be so fierce? Who would have thought Aldo Miccio could stand not being liked? Who would have thought Tim King could get so angry and

who would have thought Judene Edgar could be so feisty? (oh, we already knew that one). The thing I like about

their efforts for right or wrong is their passion for our region. I dont believe those against it are so because they think they would lose their job just like I dont think those for it are trying to somehow steal Tasmans resources.

I think its great we have people who care about our future, whether you agree with their vision or not. So I voted. I voted be-cause I also care. Good on Aldo for stick-ing his neck out there for what he believes in and good on Richard for sticking up for what he believes in. Now its time to grab that envelope and vote for what you think will be best for our region. Whatever way you go, youd no doubt be as glad as I am that its over and we can finally find out if we will merge or not.

Voting closes this Friday. For more informa-tion on amalgamation, visit www.lgc.govt.nz.

The Nelson City Council once again intends to use smoothing loans to artificially keep the lone rate increase at an average of 4.6 per cent. This will add $18 million to the councils debt for just the first year of the proposed ten year council plan.Councillors are congratulating themselves on this 4.6 per cent increase which is a slap in the face for the Government who signalled rates in-creases need to be kept at or below the inflation rate. In fact many peoples rates will increase well above this so-called average. Nelson rates have increased faster than anywhere else in New Zealand over the last ten years, an average of 13 per cent a year. Reckless spending on non essential cosmetic projects are going to push many ratepayers out of their homes. There is no reason why we cannot have a zero per cent increase, its just a matter of the council living within its (our) means. Stop raiding our pockets.Errol Millar, Nelson.

The Nelson City Council agenda for April 3 notes that the smoothing loan council proposes to keep the next financial years rate increase at an average of 4.6 per cent will add $18 million to the councils debt for just the first year of the ten year council plan.Councillors are patting each other on the back for bringing down the rate increase. In fact many peoples rates will increase well above the so-called average. Nelson rates have increased faster than anywhere else in New Zealand over the last ten years, an average of 13 per cent a year. This is unsustainable for most ratepayers.Ratepayers must make clear to councillors and the mayor that the increase in expenditure must stop. Reckless spending on vested interests is go-ing to push many ratepayers out of their homes. There is no reason why we cannot have a 0% in-crease the next financial year.Dan McGuire, Nelson.

Mia Redwood was born in safe hands last week her fathers.James Redwood can go one further than the majority of other dads, delivering his own daughter at his Richmond home. When his wife Sarah Red-wood started getting con-tractions at 5:40am last Saturday morning, it was decided that shed better get to the hospital immedi-ately. James called the mid-wife and said to meet at the Nelson Hospital. But then everything seemed to hap-pen in fast forward for the Redwoods as Sarah went into labour just moments later, before they could make it out of the house. The baby was coming and it was coming now.James was going to have to deliver his new baby daughter himself under his own roof. His immedi-ate reaction was to think back to medical courses he had been on, but it was only a midwife on the other end of his cellphone that could provide him with all of the right information during the birth. It was a quick process for Sarah however. There were no complications during the birth, only the phone call to the midwife disconnect-ing halfway. James and Sarah, along with first daughter Ava, were holding Mia just two hours after the contractions started occurring every ten minutes. Mia weighed 8.6 pounds when she was born. We thought we had a wee while to go when we had called the midwife and the ba-bysitter, says Sarah. As we were getting ready it was all over. All that was needed now was a quick call back to the midwife to say the baby had been born.

James was not aware of anyone else that had delivered their own child at home. It is pretty cool but I think other people think its more ex-citing than we do. Its kind of a strange one. It is neat to be able to say you delivered your own daughter, he says. But the Richmond couple admit that when/if child number three comes along then it will be back to the hospital. We wouldnt plan to do it like that again, no. But it wasnt a bad experience either. We were just lucky that it went really well. If there had been a complication we wouldve been in trouble, but the midwife wasnt far away.Another perk about the home birth, James car-ried on hanging curtains when it was all over. Its nice just to be in the comfort of your own home afterwards.

An animal desexing bus is coming to the Nelson SPCA, targeting low or no income pet owners. The SPCA Mobile Clinic offers free desexing operations to animal owners, so it can pre-vent unwanted animal births. SPCA centres all around New Zealand work hard to prevent unwanted births by desexing all incoming animals before they are adopted out. For members of the pub-lic whose pets did not come

through the SPCA and as a result are not desexed, the mo-bile clinic offers a free option. This will be the fourth time the caravan has come to the Nel-son region. It did not visit last year.SPCA Nelson manager Donna Walzl says any low income earners that are interested must apply now because spots are filling up fast. We just want to reduce the number of unwanted animals that come into the centre. It

gets more expensive for them and it certainly doesnt help us, she says. The majority of dog spaces had already filled up, but there are plenty of opportunities for cat owners to apply. The mobile clinic will target crossbreeds only. The mobile clinic will be in Nelson from May 3 to 22, op-erating six days a week.To book your spot at the mo-bile clinic, please contact the SPCA on 547 7171.

Rene and Amelia from Caf in the Vineyard are celebrating their sec-ond anniversary at the local caf and theyre still loving every day. When they took over at the cafe in the midst of a recession, they realised that to make the venture a success would require plenty of hard work backed up with consistently great service and outstanding food. This recipe for suc-cess worked well and they have been busy with happy customers coming through the doors, many of who re-turn on a regular basis. Rene and his team in the kitchen topped it all off by winning a 2012 NZ Beef and Lamb Award, the fifth time Rene has been recognised in these awards. Rene and Amelia acknowledge that running a successful business is definitely a team

effort and theyd like to thank their fantastic full time staff Wendy, Greg, Tom, Courtney and Hannah, together with a wonderful team of casual staff, for their dedication. Weve also had tremendous support from our sup-pliers and the winery who have con-stantly offered great advice and shown great patience over our first two years, says Rene. The Caf is ideal for private dinner functions such as business meetings, private functions and wed-dings and offers a choice of set menu or buffet meals. Their lunch menu is available daily from 11-30am to 2-30pm with popular platters available until 4pm. Organic fair trade Sublime coffee, award winning Waimea Wines and Sprig and Fern Beer on tap are available all day.

Local man premiers first documentaryHes done it all, and on every continent, now people in his home town will get to see exactly how he did it.Nelson man Mark Hap Cameron finished his quest to work on every continent on the world before his 30th birthday last November. He is now writing a book on the journey and preparing for the first public showing of a documentary he made with the award-winning film maker Richard Sidey this Friday. The film follows Haps final journey through Africa where he worked with Melbourne based charity Bikes for Humanity to ship a container of disused bikes from Australia to Africa and use the container to set up a bike work shop for locals. He says making the film was a test but seeing it all come together has been a thrill. The original plan was for Sich [Richard] to come with us but he had to pull out so I went out and bought a camera, he gave me a quick lesson and that was it. But he has done all the shooting in Melbourne and all the editing and because he is super talented Im really happy with the outcome.

The documentary will be entered in a number of film festivals but it will be Nelsonians who will have the first opportunity to watch it with Hap hosting its premiere at Vertical Limits this Friday. He says the team at Vertical Limits kindly offered a venue and he saw it as the perfect opportunity to show it. Its great because this is my home town and it will be awesome to see peoples reaction to it.The venue can hold only 70 people so Hap says its a first in first served scenario and is urging people to bring their own cushion, beanbag or chair. A note donation will also be asked for. Weve done all this on a shoestring budget and the festivals are expensive so all money collected will be used to pay entry fees for us.Doors will open at 7pm.

BIZARRE BAZAAR: Altrusa International Inc of Nelson members Anne White, left, and Judith Wastney are preparing for the Bizarre Bazaar at the Stoke Memorial Hall this Saturday. The bazaar is an opportunity for crafts people to sell their accumulated and surplus goods used for quilt making, dressmaking, toymaking and other crafts. Handmade items will also be on sale during the fundraiser for Magic Mums, a project run by Altrusa to give mothers of special needs children a weekend break. The award-winning project is held every second year by the service group and will take place later this year. The bazaar is open from 10am to 3pm this Saturday. Photo: Andrew Board.

Voting set to closeThe poll on amalgamating the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils is set to close this Friday. The official result of the election is due to be announced on Saturday. Voting packs were sent to registered voters in Nelson and Tasman with a fifty per cent majority needed in both regions for the proposal by the

Local Government Commission to go ahead. Nelson mayor and the man who started the process, Aldo Miccio, says he believes the vote will be close and is unsure on how it will fall. Those who havent sent their vote back yet are urged to get it in the post by Thursday. If voters choose to amalgamate the two councils a new election will be held in October.

We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born.

Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens show- room in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.

For some reason one day I bought a bridal mag-azine, just like that, out of the blue. I was stand-ing in the supermarket and it just seemed to be calling my nameso I bought it. Tim and I hadnt been together that long and even though wed talked about getting en-gaged and married I didnt think it was go-ing to be happening any time soon.We were lying in bed that night and I just had to say Babe, I bought something to-day, and I pulled out the magazine to show him. Awkward! Then he re-plied Well, I bought some-thing too, and he reached

into his bedside drawer and pulled out a small boxwith a ring in it! WHAT?!?!

He had been waiting for the right time to propose, and the weekend to Wellington hadnt worked out quite the way he had

planned - in fact everything went awry! The weekend to Golden Bay didnt work

out either - saying I was a little tired and grumpy is an understatement. Little

had I known he had been car-rying the ring around for a

few weeks waiting for the right moment. And that moment was then. It was perfect. It would also ex-plain why my Dad kept asking if I had any news!

We are now happily mar-ried and have just got back

from our much antici-pated, but slightly be-

Nelson Hospital is desperately seek-ing the return of therapy equipment loaned to patients when they leave hospital.Short-term loan equipment is identi-fied by a handwritten number and in-cluded shower stools, toilet frames or commodes, bed loops, and crutches. Clinical Service Support Directo-rate, service manager Allied Health, Hilary Exton says the equipment is

usually loaned out to people for six to eight weeks. We have a distinct shortage of items in our store at present and ask the community to help us get these items back into circulation for other pa-tients to benefit from them.Equipment can be dropped off to the Allied Health Store on Braemar Campus between 8am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

    Hospital needs gear back

Six young Nelson film makers got tips by one of the best in the busi-ness last week.Guy Ryan is an award winning doc-umentary maker and now runs the Inspiring Stories Trust, aiming to inspire the next generation of film makers. His teachings are about more than just making a movie though, his aim is to encourage people to make the world a better place and how film can be an effective way to do that. His workshop will travel to two dozen centres throughout the

country but started at the Victory Community Centre in Nelson last week.Guy says this is the second year he has run the workshops and the re-sults from last year prompted him to run it again. "It was so awesome to see how in-spired they got and what they then went on to do. We had one girl from Murchison in particular who was so excited and has since entered her film into a film festival. It's excit-ing seeing the excitement in these young people."

Last week saw three container ves-sels and a general cargo carrier, a car carrier, a fuel tanker, a methanol tanker, the cement ship, a super yacht Platinum, seven fishing vessels keep the port busy. Happy Easter the fish were biting and I managed to catch one- and thats where it started to go wrong. With the teenagers complaining after ten minutes they hadnt caught anything I was distracted by trying to ensure they could when the wind came out of nowhere. It changed in the space of a few moments from a 15 knot west-erly to 30knots from the south and a nasty short sharp sea. Whilst I knew

this probably wouldnt last long it was long enough to frighten my son and daughter and cause the mal-de-mer for them both. The engine was falter-ing, the halyards were caught up the mast, not too proud to ask for help, I did and we were back inside the shel-ter within an hour with two grateful, tired teenagers. Theres several points to this confession watch the weath-er, wear lifejackets, call for help early before real trouble starts. Give your-self the surety of enjoying your sail-ing, fishing another day.If in doubt dont go out

Its lights camera and all action as Dram-atix Theatre Development Trusts Lest We Forget ANZAC Commemoration is shooting into the short film genre. Auditions are complete, key crew posi-tions filled, the storyboard is finalised and filming is in full swing, say organis-ers.In three years the niche theatre group has given over seven thousand Nelso-nians the opportunity to experience a unique, fully interactive event that edu-cates, informs, and inspires. This years edition of the award winning production is titled Life in the Trenches, 1917, but it wont be like a silver screen production about guns and glory. Lest We Forget does not seek to glorify war, its purpose is remind us why we live in peace, says the team.Dramatix Theatre Development Trust was established in 2000 to provide an environment to encourage, produce and promote quality local theatre, to make theatre works accessible to a wide selec-tion of the community and to challenge

and encourage participation at all levels of theatrical endeavour. AND NEW HOME OF

Affordable heat transferand ventilation systemsOne of the most affordable ways to heat yourentire home efciently is by installing a heattransfer system. How it works is that you havea solid-fuel source such as a wood burner in oneroom and the excess heat is pumped out andcirculated to other rooms in the house via ductsand fans in the ceiling.

Its a great way of ensuring you use all the heatthat is generated in your home. The systemsthermostat also makes sure only excess heat isbeing transferred, keeping the source room at apleasant temperature all the time.

The systems are affordably priced and runat a very low cost, using a similar amountof electricity to a 100-watt light bulb. Heattransfer systems use an in-line fan and acousticducting so they run quietly and unobtrusively. They can be tted in new and existing homes.

The Vent Shop sells and installs heat transfersystems, as well as positive pressure and heatrecovery ventilation systems. They offer in-home consultations and quotes, and also sellDIY kits. Give them a call and nd out howaffordable it can be to make your home so muchwarmer this winter.

The Vent Shop is now the new home ofmoistureMASTER controlled ventilation systems. One system cant t all homes and x all problems which iswhy themoistureMASTER is such a great solution formakingyour home warm, dry and healthier. Customised to suitindividual homes, problems and budgets, moistureMASTERis guaranteed to work efciently.

Made in New Zealand using top-grade German componentry, moistureMASTER controlled ventilation systems have been aroundsince 1998.Guaranteedwith a ve year warranty, moistureMASTERsystems replace moist air in the home with drier, warm lteredair, control condensation and help eliminate mould, mildew andodours at the same time as saving money on heating, and making ahealthier environment for allergy and asthma sufferers.

The worlds first and only all-girl Johnny Cash band, Nelson-based The Johnnys, are off to California to the fourth annual Johnny Cash Mu-sic Festival in Ventura in June.Vocalist and lead guitarist Suzi Fray (aka Johnny) says the last few weeks have been like a dream. Ive spoken on the phone to Johnny Cashs daughter Cindy who said she was honoured to have The Johnnys playing her dads music and keeping it alive, she says. I still cant believe we could be on the same stage as Wanda Jackson, this years headline act, often referred to as the Queen of Rockabilly and the first woman of Rock and Roll. Their hard driving Cash covers with their unique female (but not girly) sound have won them a reputation at Nelson venues, with shows now invariably selling out to capacity crowds. Suzi says theres just one hitch about getting to California and thats cost. The Johnny Cash Music Festival is a fundraiser for the Coalition to End Family Violence and Food Share, Venturas food bank, so per-formers are donating their time, she says. If we want to accept this amazing invitation, gain some in-

ternational exposure and represent NewZealand women musicians we need to fund the trip and expenses ourselves and we are going to do it.The Johnnys are seeking sponsor-ship, donations and offers of goods or services that can be sold or auc-tioned; and theyre willing to sing for their supper with a whole range of ways that businesses and sup-porters will get recognition. Were selling ourselves Cash Up Front', Suzi says. Were asking people to book us now for staff Christmas parties, birthdays and weddings later in the year, with the concert fee to be paid Cash Up Front' to help us fund our trip. The fundraising target is $12k with the Cash up Front gigs selling for $2k each. Two fundraising concerts are also planned at The Boathouse on Friday 25 May, with the second at The Playhouse in Mapua on Sat-urday 9 June. Buy The Johnnys newly released debut CD for $20 and find out more about how tohelp get them to Ventura at http://thejohnnysnelson.blogspot.co.nz/ or send them a message viafacebook.com/#!/thejohnnysnelson

With Winter nearly upon us now is a good time to be looking at how we can be more energy ef-ficient. Being energy efficient, and using as much of our abundant renewable energy resources as we can, benefits all New Zealanders. We save money by having lower power bills and have less of an impact on our environment. We also get to enjoy warmer, healthier homes

Moisture MasterThe importance of good home ventilation should not be underestimated and one system cannot fit all homes and fix all problems which is why the moistureMASTER is a great solution for making your home warm, dry and healthy this winter. Customised to suit individual homes, problems and budgets, moistureMASTER is guaranteed to work efficiently. Made in New Zealand using top-grade German componentry, moistureMASTER is guaranteed with a five year warranty. moistureMASTER systems replace moist air in the home with drier, warm filtered air, control condensation and help eliminate mould, mildew and odours at the same time as saving money on heating, and making a healthier environment for allergy and asthma sufferers. To experience the many features and benefits of moistureMASTER in your home this winter, phone The Vent Shop now. Their experienced staff will be happy to provide a free quote.

Polar RefrigerationHeat pump systems are commonly 300% efficient, meaning for every 1kWh of electricity they consume they generate 3kWh of heat. Installing a heat pump can be more expensive than buying individual electric or gas heaters, but the initial cost will be made up from ongoing power savings. To maximise the efficient operation of a heat pump requires correct sizing

and installation. Polar Refrigeration have been servicing the Nelson region for 30 years and employ fully qualified refrigeration technician. They sell heat pumps that meet the requirements of the New Zealand ENERGY STAR programme which is only awarded to the most efficient heat pumps on the market. Choosing an ENERGY STAR heat pump could save you $150 a year on running costs, compared to a non-qualified model. Good installation is fundamental to how well a heat pump performs so call the experts at Polar Refrigeration on 548 6209.

Pink FitPink Batts keeps the heat in when it's cold and the heat out when it's hot. It can also reduce levels of noise. It comes in a range of different levels on thermal protection depending on your needs. If your house was built before 2000, you are eligible for Government funding to install insulation in your home. The Energywise grant will give you a maximum of $1,300 (or 33% of the cost) towards the cost of ceiling and under floor insulation. Call Russell or Jo today on 0800 746 534 or 541 8811 to get your home ready for winter.

P&M FireplacesInnovating to produce cleaner, more efficient wood fires has been a successful strategy for New Zealands largest wood fire manufacturer, Metro fires. The latest is a fire that can heat a 220 square metre home, deliver hot water via a wetback, and achieve emissions less than a third of the national environmental standard using renewable resources and at a lower cost per kilowatt than most alternatives. Energy efficiency is a key concern among consumers, and wood delivers clean, renewable heat at around a third the cost of fuels like gas or electricity, says Murray Sinclair from P&M Fireplaces. The Ambie Plus is also Metros cleanest burning wood fire, achieving a tested emission of under 0.5 grams of particulate per kilogram of fuel burnt with a wetback fitted. The national environmental standard is 1.5g/kg. Firewood is a very cost effective fuel, and thanks to Kiwi ingenuity, its more efficient than ever before. And as well as the aesthetic pleasure of a wood fire in the home, they provide added security in the event of power cuts or other events, says Murray.
