Term 1 Week 8 16th March 2016
The Newsletter is designed to offer an information service to the parents of Wedderburn College students and local people interested in Education.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Last Friday it was my absolute pleasure to travel to
Glenormiston to visit our five year nine students, Rex
Stephenson, Sam Lockhart, Nikita Glenister, Jasmine
Wilkinson and Lily Witham at the School for Student
Leadership, Gnurad- Gundidj. This is a Victorian Department
of Education Training initiative offering a unique residential
education experience for year nine students. The curriculum
focuses on personal development and team learning projects
sourced from students' home regions. Our students presented
their project to the group and to Mr Dougall and me. Their
plan is to run a family day in November that will assist raise
funds for our local Lions Club. It was truly inspiring to see
the mature attitude and the personal growth in our students.
We were given a tour of the facilities, enjoyed lunch with the
group and heard the presentations from the other students
attending from other school. This is a wonderful opportunity
for our student. We will apply to participate again in 2017
and fingers crossed we will be accepted.
This week we welcomed back to the College, ex-student,
Tarah Youngson. Tarah will be undertaking a placement with
the Grade 4/5 classroom and Mrs Polkinghorne as part of her
University work. She is in second year of her Bachelor of
Education course at La Trobe University.
Included in today’s newsletter is information about a program
called, “How to drug proof your kids” which will be running
in Wycheproof, Donald, St Arnaud and Charlton in the
coming weeks. We are promoting this program and are also
hoping to be able to run the program here at Wedderburn for
our school community, including Korong Vale and
Inglewood in the coming months. Stay tuned!

VALUE FOCUS: RESPONSIBILITY
DIGITAL LICENCE GRADE 5/6
Congratulations to Samantha Arnup, Coby Cunningham, Chelsea Giorlando, Aliza Lockhart, Olivia Lockhart, Jake
Murphy, Neve Nisbet and Zac Slide in Grade 6, who have met the requirements to qualify for their digital licence. This
means they are able to take their netbooks home to use in a responsible and safe manner.
The Digital Licence program, facilitated by the Alana and Madeline Foundation, aims to equip children with critical
digital skills to help protect them against cyberbullying, sexting, privacy breaches, identity theft as well as exposure to
inappropriate content. The Digital Licence helps them to be smart, safe and responsible when they’re texting, emailing,
using social media, playing games, watching music clips or researching on the internet.

YEAR 7-10 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS SCHOOL FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP - COMMUNITY LEARNING PRESENTATION
Our five students at the School for Student Leadership presented their Community Learning Project (CLP) to Margaret-
Anne Wright and Richard Dougall last Friday at Gnurad-Gundidj. The CLP is the keystone of the leadership program.
Students have spent their time at Gnurad planning their CLP to implement on their return to the Wedderburn
Community. Our students are going to be holding a community event later in the year to raise funds for the Lions Club
to support families in need due to the drought. It will also be an event that enables the community to come together in
celebration. We encourage everyone to get behind their effort to support them and make this an amazing success.
UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIERS - USIS Under changes made by the federal government, all nationally recognised certificates and training require students to
have an Unique Student Identifier (USI). All current Year 10, 11 and 12 students should have theirs by now. Year 9
students will require a USI by the 1st June 2016 as they will be completing their First Aid certificate later that month. To
apply for a USI is a straightforward process. You do require some form of identification - we have found a Medicare
card is usually the easiest. To apply for a USI go to https://www.usi.gov.au/students/create-your-usi
PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE: YEAR 10 MIPS AND WORK EXPERIENCE All Year 10 students are required to meet with Abby Shay this year. Abby is our Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs)
Coordinator. She can provide advice and assistance to helping students begin to explore the various pathways through
senior schooling and out in to future education, training and employment. A consent form has been sent home that needs
to be returned as soon as possible. Abby can also assist students with planning for their work experience placement. A
reminder that Year 10s should already have their work placement organised. If you don’t have your work placement
organised yet and need assistance please see Abby (MIPs), Mr Dougall (Yr 10 Co-ordinator) or Mr Shaw (Work
Experience Co-ordinator).

YEAR 11-12 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS
Welcome to week 8 of Term 1. I hope everyone was able to spend some time over the long weekend relaxing and
catching up on some much needed rest.
Although it is a short week this week there are many things happening both in and outside of classrooms. Our Year 11
and 12 Learning Conversations will be taking place this Thursday evening from 3.45pm until 5.45pm. These
conversations are a fantastic opportunity for staff, students and parents to discuss each student’s current progress,
strengths and areas for improvement. It is hoped that we will see everyone on the night.
To book a Learning Conversation you need to:

If you are unavailable to attend Thursday evening due to work or prior commitments, please make sure to get in touch
with your child/children’s teachers to arrange an alternative time to discuss their progress so far.
On Wednesday 23rd March our Managed Individual Pathways Coordinator, Abby Shay will be visiting to meet with
students to discuss their future pathway options. All students are reminded to check their diaries and calendars to see if
they have a booking arranged and to ensure that they are prepared. Any student who has not yet met with Abby this year
is strongly encouraged to make an appointment for early Term 2.
With the end of Term fast approaching it is now a good time for students to meet with their Advocate teachers to review
and discuss their progress this Term. Being prepared and managing your study load and stress is extremely important –
meeting with your Advocate can help. Please make an appointment time today.
REMINDERS:
HOUR OF POWER – Thursday evenings from 3.30pm – 5pm.
