    Independence Day celebrated in 'BISWA'

Keeping tune with nation,'BISWA' celebrated 64th

    Independence Day in the office

pr emis es wit h st aff and pu blic .

    Unfurling the tri-colour, the

    Chairman of 'Biswa' Mr Khirod

Chandra Malick paid rich tribute to

    those great souls whose sacrifice

made this day possible. "It was

    Mahatma Gandhi who fought a

    freedom struggle but completely a

novel one all over the world to bring

    freedom from the mighty British

rulers. Gandhiji for the fist time in theworld showed the path of peace and

    non-violence to achieve any difficult

goal," Mr Malick said. "Peace and

    non-violence are the mightiest

weapons as on today and it can be

utilized to do any thing and Bapu

    proved it," he added.

Speaking on the local problem, Mr

    Malick expressed concern over

    conversion of agricultural land for

    non-agriculture purposes. "Such

    practice, if continues unabated, will

create food scarcity in future," he said.He emphasized the need for

cultivation of each inch of land like

that of Kerala. He also cast light on

    waste land development to

    compensate the loss of agriculture

land for industrial or similar other

uses. "It is quite strange that Orissa

having a good geographical area and

fertile land; also rich in mineral

    resources is still languishing under

pover ty. To boost up agricu ltura l

production all over the state, we will

    create 'BISWA' Agriculture

    Development Corporation'. Rural

youths heading to urban areas in

search of work will be employed as

    'Agriculture Development Officer'

and can eke out their livelihood in

more prestigious manner in their own

place," the chairman informed. Suchan effort will not only strengthen rural

economy it will also go in a long way

to create food security all over the

    country. Besides, it would stop

migration of labourers to other states

by rural people for which Orissa have

already earned a bad name in national

    level, he said.

look after the child but at the same

time he was unable to control the call

of the nature. It was obvious for him

    to get angry.

They had a serious argument and

    hot discussion took place between

    them. The mother of Shyamsundar

    cum the mother-in-law Nirupama

    supported her son that made

Nir upa ma to fee l hel ple ss.

    Nirupama's mother died before her

    marriage. She has three married

brothers. She requested her father to

bring her back. When her father came,

    she sought the permission from

    Shyamsundar and the mother-in-law.

While they avoided to listen, both of

them rather said that if she would go

with her father, she should not come

    again.

    FCC counsellor Mrs Mohapatra

    collected the phone number of

Nir upa ma, co nta ct ed her and

convinced her to come to term with

    her husband. During the counselling,

FCC came to know that due to the

negligence of her husband and the in-

    laws, two consecutive abortions took

place to Nirupama. After lot of care

she could get the present child- a

beautiful girl. Due to want of food and

prope r care to the mother, breast

feeding was also impossible for her

and the child fully depended on bottle

feeding. "This child needed morecare. But Shyamsundar didn't take

    anything seriously, so also my

    mother-in-law," said Nirupama

    during the counselling.

    For some silly matter

    Shyamsundar demanded before his

wife to take care of him and serve him

    instead of the child. Shyamsundar

also is habituated with taking liquor

and spends large share of his income

for it. Even, he had to depend on his

parents for his day to day expenses.

His parents supported him also. But

    Shyamsundar could not understand

    that the dependency created problem

    for Nirupama, his wife.

He was not taking proper care of

Nirupama although she had to take

every care of the child including make

her habituated to breast feeding as per

the advice of the doctor, guardians

    and the Asha Karmi.

This was the story from both the

sides. Each one of them narrated their

problems to the FCC. However, after

a regular counselling to husband and

wife, their parents and all other family

    members and relatives; they

    understood their mistakes.

    FCC counsellor made an

    agreement between the wife and

husband and directed them to follow

the rules of Hindu joint family. There

has been a remarkable change in the

    attitude and beheviour of

    Shyamsundar towards Nirupama and

the girl child. On her part, Nirupama

    also accepted her in-laws and

    husband. She came back to

    Shyamsundar's house. Now they live

happily like any other couple in our

    society.

    Purohit, Mr Jayachandra Mishra, Mrs

    Bani Mahapatra, Dr Rajaram Sarangi,

Mr P K Patnaik PRO and many others

also spoke on the occasion. All the

    speakers appealed to work together

    with solidarity and make our

    motherland stronger and stronger at

par with any other developed nation

    in the world.

    EditorialIndependence Day and Its Significance

True independence and freedom can only exist in

doing what's right. The significance of the Independence

Day in the existence of a nation is of greater value. The day

is much more than merely celebrating the anniversary of

India's free sta tehood. 15th August 1947 symbolizes the

victory of Indian patriotism which the nation got after

uncertain yet brutal struggle from the repression of the

British colonialism. The British, who oppressed India for

centuries had primarily arrived to initiate business but

steadily captured the entire government of the nation. They

educated the Indians and in the process generated

enthusiasts who weren't hesitant in helping them expanding

    their regime.

"Swaraj is My Birth Right (Swaraj mera janmasidhadhikar he)," -said Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Men and women

from all over India joined hands and fought for India's

freedom. Many were acclaimed while others' contribution

went unnoticed. However, praise wasn't what they desired

for. It was the dream of free and autonomous India which

motivated them to walk the path of struggle. Neither did

they battle for their region nor for their natives, but for

India and Indians. At the time of growing communal and

caste conflicts, it becomes significant to remind us that the

people who laid the foundation of free India has always

dreamt of an integrated nation. Hence, it is our duty to live

and sustain their dreams, the sole reason for which

Independence Day in India is observed.

It is a day to pay a mark of respect to our Patriots because

of whom we are breathing an air of freedom which does not

have the elements of exploitation and repression. Solitude

    is Independence.

    encouraging the first lady IPS

    officer of Western Orissa

    Miss Sarah Sharma, 'BISWA'

    hold a grand felicitation

    meeting in its office premises

where the chairman Mr K C

    Malick presided.

At the out set the public

    relations officer of 'BISWA'

Mr Pramod K Patnaik gave brief

    introduction of Miss Sarah

    including her bright academic

    career. The Chairman Mr Malick

    expressed utter satisfaction over

    the outstanding performance of

    this Oriya girl particularly from

    western Odisha in the most

    coveted civil service job. "Miss

Sarah will be an officer with a

difference and she will bring gloryfor the state and for the country as

    a sincere officer with humanistic

    touch," Mr Malick said.

    Replying to the felicitation,

Miss Sarah said that she felt

privileged to be in 'BISWA'-an NGO

    with such vast network and

    manpower. "I am extremely happy

today for your love and affection and

for my presence here with all of you.

I am also indebted to the people of

Orissa who have been showering their

love and blessings on me after

pu blicat ion of the civ il ser vice

results," said Miss Sarah."In a democracy, the basic needs

of the people must be fulfilled failing

which there would be so many crises

including the present one from the

Maoists here and other parts of

    the country and world over,"

    said Miss Sarah. "The

    objectives of a democracy fail

when people don't get their basic

needs. And it is NGOs who can

bridg e the gap ," she add ed.

    "Corporatization of economy

    has already been taking place

and we must remain alert to

safeguard the interest of the small

    sectors," she suggested.

    She also appreciated BISWA's

efforts to make Orissa poverty and

hunger free since this state is

    languishing under poverty and

illiteracy. She suggested to realize the

    problems of the poor, marginalized

and the downtrodden so that they can

also be part of the mainstream.

A good number of staff of 'BISWA'also spoke on the occasion wishing

her good luck and bright career. Mr

    Arjeet Mahapatra Manager (Law)

    proposed a vote of thanks.

'BISWA' will start working for this by

2011 and this would minimize the rush of

the rural people to the urban area, Mr

Malick said expressing hope that such

efforts could ensure social security for the

people suffering from abject poverty. The

    Chairman further informed that 'BISWA'

has already registered its own Insurance

Company and it would start functioning

    from April 2011.

There are many jobs that provide ample

income to the youths but we lack expert

hands. Such jobs are plumbing, driver,

    electrician, motor mechanic, wielders, etc.

There is demand of these people

everywhere but no skilled hands are

available. The result being the employers

don't get good employees and when semi

skilled or unskilled employees work for

this, they cause accidents much to the

worries of every sector. Hence 'BISWA'

would give training to youths in thesetrades where t hey can earn independently

without waiting for the government jobs.

Finally he appealed all 'BISWA' staff

to work as social workers but never as

    employees. "This institution provides an

opportunity for all of us to serve the people

in need and also the nation as a whole.

Hence we must have the zeal of sacrifice

and selfless service that is need of t he hour

now," the chairman said. "At the same

time, it is also the duty of our staff to

bring the message of 'BISWA' to all and

show them the right path towardsdevelopment," he appealed. Amidst

plentitude this state in particular should

also flourish and all people here should live

a life with dignity and self respect, Mr

    Malick emphasized.

All the staff of 'BISWA' including Mr

Pitabasha Sethi, Mr Ajay Shroff, Mr Arjit

Mahapatra, Mr Ramesh Dash, Mr Sanjib

A Success story of FCCMr. Shyamsundar Kaleth

    came to BISWA Family

    Councelling Centre (FCC) on

    dt.27.06.2010 with fractured leg to

    meet the counsellor Mrs Sarita

    Mohapatra accompanied by his

parents. He is 30 years old and

passed +2. He works as an auto

    rickshaw driver. He belongs to

    village Themra of Sambalpur

district, just 12 km away from

here. Four years back, he got

    married with Nirupama of Bargarh

district . Shyamsundar lives in a

    joint family.

    According to Shyamsundar, he

met a road accident in his auto and

the right leg was fractured. Doctor

advised him to take twenty-one days

bed rest and for that reason he was

    not driving his auto rickshaw.

Nirupama is 23 yrs old now. She

was only 19 when she married

    Shyamsundar four years back. The

couple has a seven month old child.

    Shyamsundar's elder brother is

working at Jharsuguda and stays there

    with his family. Occasionally, they

visit their home. One younger sister

    is staying with Shyamsundar. His

father is a retired t eacher. Hence, he

doesn't depend on his children since

he draws a pension every month.

    In course of discussion, the

    counsellor Mrs Mohapatra came to

know that Nirupama left her father in

law's house because once out of anger

    her husband (Shyamsundar) beat her

    (Nirupama). Shyamsundar wanted to

go to toilet but his wife wanted that

he should look after the child. This

created the conflict between the two.

His mother was busy in cooking food

for the family. No one was there to
