COACHING STAFFHead Coach,Jim SchwartzPro Career: Named Lions’ twenty-fifthhead coach on January 16, 2009.Schwartz enters his fourth season inDetroit after helping the team to their firstplayoff appearance since 1999. He cameto Detroit following 10 seasons with theTennessee Titans, including the past eightas defensive coordinator. As the Titans’defensive coordinator since 2001,Schwartz’s defensive unit held firm in twomajor defensive categories that factoredsignificantly in the team’s overall success;rushing defense and third-down conver-sion. From 2001-08, Tennessee rankedfifth in rushing yards allowed per game(103.5) and sixth in third-down conver-sion percentage (36.1). Before joining theTitans in 1999, he spent three years(1996-98) as a defensive assis-tant/quality control coach with theBaltimore Ravens. During his tenure inBaltimore, he also coached the team’soutside linebackers. After the ClevelandBrowns moved to Baltimore following the1995 season, Schwartz made the transi-tion from player personnel to coaching.From 1993-95, he worked in the Browns’player personnel department, serving asboth a college and pro scout. Careerrecord: 18-31.Background: Schwartz worked on thecollege level for four years before movingonto the NFL. He began his coachingcareer as a graduate assistant coach atthe University of Maryland, tutoring theTerrapins' linebackers in 1989 and thenserved as graduate assistant at theUniversity of Minnesota (1990). Hebecame a position coach in the secondaryat North Carolina Central (1991) beforemoving to Colgate (1992) as linebackerscoach. Played collegiately at GeorgetownUniversity where he lettered four years atlinebacker. In 1988 he earned numeroushonors that include Division IIICoSIDA/GTE Academic All-America, All-America and team captain.Personal: Born June 2, 1966, inBaltimore, Md.
