MUSIC IN WORSHIP

Today’s Psalm, Psalm 66: 1 – 12, is a song of thanksgiving. In the

first 4 verses, we praise God for his “awesome deeds.” Beginning in

verse 5, the Psalm writer is eager to tell about what God has done.

The focus moves to the exodus from Egypt. Since the congregation

knows the story well, it is not necessary to retell it in detail (“He

turned the sea into dry land, so that they went through the water on

foot”). This story of events that happened long ago and far away

becomes a story in which the listeners are involved – our story.

Verses 9 – 12 are presumably referring to God watching over Israel

after the exodus for forty years in the wilderness, in the midst of

various difficulties (“You brought us into the snare; you laid heavy

burdens on our backs…but you brought us out into a place of

refreshment.”). This psalm follows the typical pattern of a psalm of

thanksgiving: we praise God, we recall troubles and prayers, we

recognize God heard and answered those prayers, we rejoice.

Choirs resume rehearsals Wednesday, August 21st

Do you like to sing? Maybe you’ve sung in a choir before and are

looking to dust off those vocal cords? Or maybe being part of a

choir is a new idea. Choir is a great place for spiritual formation and

artistic expression, and fall is a great time to start! Northminster has

options for all ages. Children and youth rehearse weekly and sing in

worship once a month. Chancel Choir rehearses weekly and sings

each Sunday in worship. There is no registration process – simply

show up to the first rehearsal.
