1.66" Double Valve Pump Operating Instructions High Quality Groundwater and Surface Water Monitoring Instrumentation (Page 1 of 2) Model 408 SS and PVC 1.66" dia. Operating Principles When the Solinst Double Valve Pump (DVP) is placed in a well or borehole, water rises inside the pump and the twin tubes to static level. A Control Unit is used to deliver compressed gas to the pump. During the drive period the gas pushes down on the water column contained in the drive line tubing, closing the check valve at the base of the pump. This forces water up the sample line tubing. A vent period, during which the gas is released, allows hydro- static pressure to refill the pump and drive line with sample water. The top check valve prevents water in the sample line from falling back into the pump body. This pressurization and vent cycle is repeated manually or automatically as set by the timers on the Control Unit. The cycle may be regulated for purging or sampling. Pump Operation Portable: The Pump will be attached to skip-bonded, dual 1/4" OD LDPE tubing, mounted on a reel. a) For the stainless steel model, push the tubing inserts into the end of the tubing and into the drive and sample compression fittings of the DVP (the nuts of the compression fittings may have to be loosened before inserting the tubing). Tighten the nut 1-1/4 turns past finger tight for proper seal (see overleaf). b) Lower the assembled DVP into the well, using a stainless steel safety line. The Solinst Model 103 Tag Line can be used for this purpose. c) Connect the supply line with the in-line dryer from the compressed gas source to the Control Unit. The drive line connects from the Control Unit to the reel. d) Attach a short (3 ft. or 1 m) length of 1/4" OD sample line to the sample connector on the reel. Dedicated: The Pump will come with a roll of tubing to be cut to length, as required, for attachment to a Wellhead. a) Cut the tubing to desired length. See step a) above for tubing connection instructions to the stainless steel Pump. For the PVC model, attach the 1/4" sample tubing to the compression fitting on the DVP and slide the 3/8" drive line tubing onto the barbed fitting and secure with the single ear Oetiker Clamp (see overleaf). b) Attach the sample and drive lines to the appropriate Push Fittings on the underside of the Wellhead. c) Lower the DVP into the well, using a stainless steel safety line if desired. If useful, attach the safety line to the suspension hook on the underside of the Wellhead. Push the Wellhead firmly onto the riser casing. d) Attach a short (3 ft. or 1 m) length of 1/4" OD sample line to the sample connector on the Wellhead. (See diagram at right for use of Push Fittings.) e) Connect the supply line with the in-line dryer from the compressed gas supply to the Control Unit. The drive line connects from the Control Unit to the top of the Wellhead. f) For detailed pumping instructions, please see the Solinst Model 464 Control Unit Operating Instructions. Notes: 1. The maximum lift for stainless steel (SS) pumps is 500 ft. (150 m), and 100 ft. (30 m) for the PVC model. 2. Operating PrinciplesWhen the Solinst Double Valve Pump (DVP) is placed in a well or borehole, water rises inside the pump and the twin tubes to static level. A Control Unit is used to supply compressed gas to the pump. During the drive cycle, the gas pushes down on the water column contained in the drive line tubing, closing the check valve at the base of the pump. This forces water up the sample line tubing.

A vent period, during which the gas is released, allows hydrostatic pressure to refill the pump and drive line with sample water. The top check valve prevents water in the sample line from falling back into the pump body. This pres-surization and vent cycle is repeated manually or automatically as set by the timers on the Control Unit. The cycle may be regulated for purging or sampling.

Pump OperationPortable: The Pump will be attached to skip-bonded, dual 1/4" OD LDPE tubing, mounted on a reel.

a) Slip the double ear Oetiker clamps onto the drive and sample stems on the DVP. Push drive and sample tubing onto the stems and crimp both ears on each clamp to secure the tubing.

b) Lower the assembled DVP into the well.

c) Connect the supply line with the in-line dryer from the compressed gas source to the Control Unit. The drive line connects from the Control Unit to the reel.

d) Attach a short (3 ft. or 1 m) length of 1/4" OD sample line to the sample connector on the reel.

Dedicated: The Pump will come with a roll of tubing to be cut to length, as required, for connection to a Wellhead.

a) Cut the tubing to desired length. Slip the double ear Oetiker clamps onto the drive and sample stems on the DVP. Push drive and sample tubing onto the stems and crimp both ears on each clamp to secure the tubing.

b) Attach the sample and drive lines to the appropriate Push Fittings on the underside of the Wellhead. (See diagram at right for use of Push Fittings).

c) Lower the DVP into the well. Push the Wellhead firmly onto the riser casing.

d) Attach a short (3 ft. or 1 m) length of 1/4" OD sample line to the sample line adaptor on the Wellhead.

e) Connect the supply line with the in-line dryer from the compressed gas supply to the Control Unit. The drive line connects from the Control Unit to the top of the Wellhead.

f) For detailed pumping instructions, please see the Solinst Model 464 Control Unit Operating Instructions.

Note: 1. The maximum lift for stainless steel (SS) pumps is 500 ft. (150 m).

2. DO NOT exceed an operating pressure of 250 psi.

3. The pump has been decontaminated before leaving Solinst however, you may wish to decontaminate your pump before use. The pump should be decontaminated between wells.

4. Refer to the 464 operating instructions for detailed pumping instructions.

For Use with Model 407 Bladder Pumps & 408 Double Valve Pumps

Operating Instructions

Notes: • The air tank is rated to 150 psi.

• If a car battery is used, be sure the vehicle is running as the compressor will drain the battery quickly. If a stand alone battery is used, the battery will drain in approximately 20 minutes.

• It is recommended not to alter the power cord for use with a cigarette lighter adapter.

• The compressor is thermally protected, therefore it will automatically shut off if it overheats. Once the compressor has cooled sufficiently, it will power up once again.

ON/OFF Switch

1. Connect the pressure line from the Solinst pump control unit to the pressure outlet on the 12 Volt Compressor.

2. Ensure that the ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position before connecting to the power source. The ball valve handle on the side of the compressor should also be in the OFF position before connecting.

3. Connect the compressor to a 12 volt DC power source (such as a car battery) using the alligator clips. The red clip should connect to the positive terminal on the power source, and the black should connect to a proper ground or to the negative terminal on the power source.

4. Once the compressor has been connected to the power source and to all pressure lines, switch the compressor ON. This will begin to charge the tank to 125 psi, which takes approximately 4 minutes.

5. Once the tank has been fully charged to 125 psi, switch the ball valve to the ON position.

6. Once pumping begins, the air pressure in the tank will drop to 90 psi. The compressor will then recharge to 125 psi or to the selected pumping rate.

MaintenanceAfter every 20 hours of operation, the compressor tank should be vented first, then drained. If the compressor is being operated in more humid conditions, it may need to be drained more often.

Note: Do not open the draining valve until all air in the compressor tank has been released (gauge shows 0 psi).

To vent/release the air pressure from the compressor, turn the compressor OFF and disconnect the clips from the power source. Ensure the ball valve handle is in the ON position. With the drive and sample lines still connected to the pump control unit, select “Drive” on the pump control unit until the compressor’s pressure gauge shows 0 psi.

Note: If not draining the tank, it is not necessary to vent the tank, before disconnecting the supply and drive lines. All of these air fittings are designed to safely connect and disconnect under pressure. If the tank is empty, or at a very low pressure, it will be easier to connect/disconnect the lines.

To drain the compressor tank, turn the draining valve on the underside of the tank counterclockwise to open. This allows condensation/water to exit the tank.

Operating Steps1 The Pump is submerged in the well.

Hydrostatic pressure forces water to fill the pump body and both the Drive and Sample Lines to static water level.

2 Use an Electronic Control Unit to apply pressure from a compressed air or Nitrogen source to the Drive Line. The pressure should not be high enough to allow air into the Pump Body.

The actual pressure needed is calculated based on depth to static level in feet, multiplied by 0.43, with 10 psi added. (e.g. 50 ft to static x 0.43 psi/ft level + 10 psi = 31.5 psi needed.)

Water in the Drive Line circulates through the Pump and up the Sample Line. The Bottom Check Valve closes to prevent water returning to the formation.

3 The system is allowed to vent, and the level in the Drive Line tubing recovers to static level, as water flows in through the filter intake at the base of the Pump.

The Upper Check Valve of the Pump closes to prevent water from draining back down the Sample Line. The water level in the Sample Line remains constant and above the static water level.

4 Pressure is re-applied to the Drive Line, circulating water from the line through the Pump, and raising the level in the Sample Line closer to the surface.

After repeated cycles of pressure and vent, water in the Sample Line is expelled at surface in a gentle pulsating flow.

IntroductionRetrieving a groundwatersample using a Bladder orDouble Valve Pump, requiresanswers to two questions -how much pressure and howmuch volume of drive gas do Ineed? The drive gas is usuallyair or nitrogen deliveredthrough portable gas cylindersor an air compressor.Portability to the site and thepressure requirement for theapplication, are the maindeciding factors. The selection of either compressed nitrogen orair, to use as the drive gas, is made based on the availability, aswell as the potential for affecting groundwater sample quality.

Pumping PressureDetermining the amount of applied pressure (in psi) to retrievea sample, is simple. 1 psi of pressure can raise a 2.3 ft columnof water, which is about half of the column height of water infeet, expressed as psi.

e.g. If the Bladder Pump's intake is at 100 ft below groundsurface, you will require approximately 50 psi of pressure tobring a sample to ground surface. If you are sampling with aDouble Valve Pump, then this calculation is made from groundlevel to static water level (as a minimum, but can be made fromtotal pump depth to maximize purging rates). Therefore, if aDouble Valve Pump is 100 ft below ground surface, and staticwater level is at 50 ft, you can select a pressure of between 25 and 50 psi. With both Bladder Pumps and Double ValvePumps, add an extra 10 psi to allow for “line loss”.

Drive Gas VolumeGas volume is usually expressed as CFM (Cubic Feet perMinute). As a 'rule of thumb', it takes about 1 CFM of gas (air or nitrogen) to deliver 1 USGPM (US Gallon per Minute)of water, at 0 psi. If you opt to sample with an air compressor, you should also consider using a 50% duty cycle or, 'factor ofsafety', for the compressor. This 50% duty cycle ensures thatthe air compressor won't be running all the time.

e.g. To collect a sample from a depth to water of 100 ft (30 m), using a Double Valve Pump at a rate of 0.05 USGPM (200 mL/min), the calculation is:

0.05 USGPM (200 mL/min) x 1.5 (includesa 50% duty cycle) = a drive gas requirementof 0.075 CFM, or about 0.1 CFM.

Now the user needs to select an air compressor that will supplya minimum of 0.1 CFM at 50 psi pressure. This is done bychecking the manufacturer's data sheet to see that the CFMneeded will meet the output delivery for the required pressure.Considering a 50% duty cycle, the Solinst 12 Volt Air Compressor(pt.#106009) will deliver 0.1 CFM at 50 psi, which is equivalent toa 100 ft (30 m) pumping depth. A larger compressor should beused for deeper applications.

Pump ControllerWhen selecting a pump controller, look for easy to followpreset pumping options. This helps take the guesswork out ofdetermining suitable drive and vent times. For example, if youanticipate that the monitoring well has good recharge and'makes water', then select a 'fast' cycle rate (~6 sec/cycle ofdrive & vent times); in poorly producing, or 'slow to recharge'wells, a longer cycle rate of ~115 sec may be more suitable.

To help protect the pump controller from damage due tomoisture, always position the pump controller physicallyhigher than the sample discharge and wellhead. This helpsprevents a syphoning effect, where the gravity back-flow ofsample water can enter into the pump controller.

Note that there will be a time delay from when the pumpcontroller is turned 'ON', to when an actual water sample isdischarged at ground surface. This time delay could be as muchas several minutes.

Sampling Groundwaterusing Model 407/408 Pumps

Tip: What do you do when your pnuematic pump isproperly connected, yet there is no sample discharge?A simple 'trick', is to submerge the sample dischargeline into a clear container of water. During the drivecycle, you should see bubbles. An aggressive blast ofair bubbles can mean that there is no water available, while a steady mild bubbling indicates that the pumpis operating and the sample water is on the way up!

Solinst Double Valve PumpsDouble Valve Pumps can provide high quality, representative groundwater samples. However, to get the best quality samples from your pump, it is critical to understand how the Double Valve Pump works and how to operate it properly.

Operating PrinciplesWhen a Double Valve Pump is submerged, hydrostatic pressure forces water through the filter intake in the base of the pump, filling the pump body and both the drive and sample lines to static level.

Pressure is applied to the drive line using a compressed air source and a pump control unit. During the drive period on the control unit, the pressure pushes down on the water column in the drive line, which forces the water in the pump up the sample line. A check valve at the bottom of the pump closes to prevent water from exiting the pump during the drive period.

After the drive period, the pump control unit switches to vent, and pressure is released. New formation water flows into the pump and drive line, while a check valve at the top of the pump closes to prevent water from draining back down the sample line.

After venting, pressure is re-applied, again forcing water from the pump and raising the water in the sample line closer to the surface. Repeating the drive and vent cycle will eventually cause the water in the sample line to discharge at surface in a gentle pulsating flow. (See the Double Valve Pump Operating Principles document for a detailed illustration of the Double Valve Pump operation).

Optimizing PressureThe key to a representative sample, especially when monitoring for volatiles, is to not allow drive gas to enter the pump and aerate the sample water during a drive period. This means you need to carefully calculate the appropriate amount of pressure to be applied. Always calculate pressure based on depth to static water level (plus 10 psi for line loss), increasing only incrementally to improve performance.

The pressure needed is calculated based on the fact that it takes about 1 psi of pressure to raise 2.3 ft. of water. To calculate pressure needed in psi, take depth to static level in feet, and multiply by 0.43 psi/ft. (1 psi / 2.3 feet = 0.43 psi/ft.). E.g., if depth to static water level is 50 ft., the pressure needed is calculated by the following: 50 ft. to static level x 0.43 psi/ft. + 10 psi = 32 psi needed.

For applications to depths of 100 ft (30 m) or less, a Solinst 12 Volt Compressor is an excellent option. For deeper applications, a larger compressor should be used. When selecting a compressor, keep in mind that it takes about 1 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) to deliver 1 US Gallon per Minute (~4000 ml/min) at 0 psi.

Typically, an air compressor with a 4 to 5 CFM capacity will provide and maintain an output pressure of 100 psi. An oil-less compressor should always be used.

For deeper sampling, a compressed air cylinder with a regulator is also an option. To get a representative sample, you may want to consider using nitrogen instead of air as your compressed gas source. A nitrogen cylinder is ideal as it is an inert, dry gas. It takes about 10 L of compressed gas to supply 1 L of sample water.

Control Unit

With the proper pump control unit, Double Valve Pumps can achieve high purge rates, as well as low flow sampling rates. A control unit with preset flow rates, as well as the ability to adjust the drive/vent cycle is an advantage to ensure you get the optimal sampling rate for your application.

Pumping Depth

Because you need a column of water in the drive line to push down on, to circulate water through the pump and up the sample line, the higher the water column present in the drive line - the better. A large water column makes the pump more efficient and less likely to over pressurize the system and allow air to enter the pump body. Having the pump submerged a minimum of a few meters below static water level is strongly recommended.

Well Recovery Rate

Having more than a few meters of water in the drive line is also helpful in situations where you know your well is slow to recover. This helps prevent drive gas from entering the pump if your well has not fully recovered to static level before the next drive period. Knowing how quickly your well recovers, also helps you time your drive/vent cycles properly.

Purging

If you are concerned about water from different levels mixing while the pump is being lowered, purging the pump a few times when the pump is at its desired sampling depth will eliminate any chemistry from other levels.
