LITURGY CORNER 20 with Fr. James
Distraction at Mass, Part 3: Distractions of Spontaneity
In one way of looking at it, “liturgy planning” sounds like an oxymoron. Since the structure of the Mass is always the same, and the readings and prayers of the seasons are prescribed, what's to plan? But, of course, for the Sunday Masses homilies must be planned, music selected, intercessions composed, and logistics for any special rites need to be thought out and sometimes even rehearsed. So considerable time, thought, and effort may go into any given weekend liturgy. But isn't even this all too rigid, not leaving any room for the Spirit to move? Isn't there any room for spontaneity in Catholic Sunday worship? The General Instruction of the Roman Missal makes it sound like the answer is no:
[T]he priest must remember that he is the servant of the sacred Liturgy and that he himself is not permitted, on his own initiative, to add, to remove, or to change anything in the celebration of Mass. [GIRM #24]
However, this statement occurs in the context of accommodations and adaptations that are allowed in the Missal. Not only is there structural wiggle room in the Mass, but a degree of spontaneity can naturally happen in the delivery of the homily, or what words or phrases are emphasized, and the like. On the other hand, spontaneity is the antithesis of formal, ritual worship. For a minister to “express himself” by innovating on the spot can be a major distraction to the effect of engaging in such a communal act of formal worship as the Mass. Even in that first formational generation of Christians when the formal structure of the Mass was more fluid, St. Paul in his instructions to the charismatic Corinthians sought to control spontaneous outbursts in the Sunday assembly for the sake of order. “Indeed, the spirits of prophets are under the prophets' control, since he is not the God of disorder but of peace.” (1 Cor. 14:32-33). So clearly, spontaneity as such does not have a high priority in the Mass itself.

FR. ALBERT FELICE-PACE, O.P. RETIREMENT At the end of June, Fr. Albert Felice-Pace, O.P. will be retiring after 55 years of service. Fr. Albert served as Director of St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center from 1993-2003. He celebrated Masses and was a presence on campus on September 11, 2001 when the students organized a vigil at the Newman Center. During his tenure he helped raise funds to remodel parts of the chapel and installed an elevator at the center so everyone, including disabled members of the community, could participate in the life of the Church. Most importantly, he touched the lives of so many people in his 10-years of service to St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center. This wonderful community brought him so much joy in seeing the interactions and mentoring between students, faculty, and older members of the Newman Center. Father still speaks fondly of his time at U of A and feels blessed to have served such a wonderful community. At his current and final post at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Center will be throwing a retirement party for him on April 18. If you would like to send Fr. Albert any well wishes, the address is 4765 Brussels St., Las Vegas, NV 89119. RCIA Candidates for Full Communion in the Church 2015
Isaac Duarte is currently a senior at the U of A. From Annapolis, MD, Isaac was baptized Christian but decided to become Catholic "after hearing Catholics talk about God...I finally get what people mean when they say they love God." Isaac studies philosophy, and is seeking spiritual enrichment and enjoys reading great Catholic philosophers, especially Thomas Aquinas. Ben Whitely, Sponsor Tyler Gonzales moved to Tucson two years ago from New Jersey. He will graduate from Pima Community College in May of this year and will continue his studies in Psychology at the University of Arizona. Tyler is a lover of knowledge and of the truth. He has always had a sense of God's presence and was introduced more formally to Jesus by his Grandfather. He was baptized Lutheran. He continues his journey towards a deeper relationship with God in many different ways and believes that the Catholic Church holds the key to his salvation. He anxiously awaits the night when he will profess his belief and love and meet Jesus for the first time in the Holy Eucharist. Kim Sisson, Sponsor Brian Harmon: Born in Cleveland, Ohio Brian was raised by his parents; his mother, a Methodist, and his father, a Catholic. For family stability, his father converted to his wife’s religion. Brian was baptized in the Methodist church. Through most of his youth, Brian attended services with his parents although discussion of his faith at home was nominal. Through his college years at Miami University in Ohio, Brian continued a distant relationship with God. He found the need for Jesus in his life lacking, mostly because he was young, naive and challenged with his schooling and his social life. After graduation, Brian left the Midwest venturing into the high country of Los Alamos, NM where he worked for the Los Alamos National Labs and an Archeology Company of Santa Fe. It was there that Brian met Jackie La New in 2010. Sharing their passions of hiking the Rocky Mountains and exploring old ruins and points of interest in Northern New Mexico their relationship grew, their love blossomed and deepened, and they became engaged. In 2013, Brian and Jackie moved to Tucson so that Brian could continue his studies at the UofA. Nourishing their relationship, they both want the love of Jesus to be a part of their lives. Attending Mass with Jackie, Brian has grown in his understanding of Catholicism through the studies and guidance of our Newman Center. With Jackie’s love, support and commitment, Brian has a much better relationship with God and together they will follow their faith in Jesus Christ. Jackie and Brian will be married this coming June 20 th. Carlos Marquez, Sponsor Aungelique Rodriguez came to the U of A to study Journalism and Mexican -American Studies, earning dual B.A. degrees last year. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Mexican American Studies, with a focus on research towards border and immigration. Aungelique loves her home town of South Phoenix, and is also active in the Tucson community, volunteering with high school youth. She is a great fan of old school hip hop and R&B. Aungelique has a deep appreciation for the ways that faith and family life nurture each other, and she values her close bond with her family. She looks forward to receiving her First Communion and Confirmation at the Easter Vigil. Rebecca McQuade, Sponsor
