VISUAL ACCESSIBILITYin Graphic Design: A client – designer communication failure.
It is essential that graphic design is visually clear and accessible. Inaccessible makes daily tasks difficult or even dangerous!
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
Graphic design is inextricably linked to the effective communication of visual information in society
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
During the briefing process the establishment of a common language between the client and the designer is vital for communicating successfully, particularly when developing the brief
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
Inclusive design is a general approach to designing in which designers ensure that their products and services address the needs of the widest possible audience, irrespective of age or ability
The pyramid model of diversity can be used to show how inclusive design aims to extend the target market to include those who are less able, while accepting that specialist solutions may be required to satisfy the needs of those at the top of the pyramid.
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
There are a variety of tools and methods to assist designers from all disciplines when considering their users.

DISCUSSION
This study investigatesclient – designer communicationin the graphic design industry, with regard to visual accessibility.
The results highlight three key themes:1.Lack of communication2.Lack of awareness of visual accessibility tools in industry3.Clients’ importance of visual accessibility decreases with increased experience of commissioning graphic design projects.
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
1. LACK OF COMMUNICATION
i.e. The designer’s thought:If the client doesn’t include itin the design brief, then they don’t allow for the timeand money to be spent on It consideration, limitingthe designer to resulting anaccessible design.
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
1. LACK OF COMMUNICATION
i.e. The client’s thought:The designer will take accessibility into accounteven if it’s not in the brief.
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
1. LACK OF COMMUNICATION
Causes:
Designers & clients are either not verbalizing the need for visual accessibility in conversation with each other.
Designers & clients are either not using the same language/term to help them understanding what the other group has to say.
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
1. LACK OF COMMUNICATION
Studies:Both parties need to take responsibility for the consideration of visual accessibility.
Graphic designers in particular should recognize their responsibility in considering visual accessibility even if the clients don’t request it. The graphic designers need to take more responsibility in driving this.
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
2. LACK OF ACCESSIBILITY TOOLS
i.e. The designer’s thought:Sometimes, the client include information about a guidelines for accessible tools. The designers often find it difficult to implement the information within the guidelines. Since it will make time & cost issue, the designer end up relying on their own personal judgement.BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
2. LACK OF ACCESSIBILITY TOOLS
i.e. The client’s thought:The designers should followthe guidelines, but it comes with the time and cost issue.
The clients sometimes prevent the designer from using the tools, and make the ultimate decision about the design process.
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
Studies:
However, the clients and other “non-designer” have less input on design decisions than designers.
This raises the questions of whether the designers actually need the client to request a visual accessibility, or whether the designer have a responsibility to give it considerations regardless.
BOOKCLUB: Visual Accessibility in Graphic Design
2. LACK OF ACCESSIBILITY TOOLS
Client’s importance of visual accessibility decreases with experience, and this might be explained by the relative importance of other factors, such as time and cost.

3. VISUAL ACCESSIBILITY & CLIENT EXPERIENCE
