Dear Parents and Students
Together at Loreto, in all we plan and do we look to emphasize the enduring importance of seeking connectedness, right rela onships, wellness, excellence and the service and empowerment of others. Last week’s ac vi es a est to this. The Year 9’s spent a day celebra ng sisterhood, nurturing their connectedness to each other and their individual wellness. The Year 10’s faced the challenges of outdoor camping and physical ac vi es and discovered great depths of strength and resilience. The Year 11’s, over a three day program, explored the importance we place on such pursuits as they opened their minds and hearts to the call of leadership and what this means in the context of a Loreto educa on. Our Year 12’s celebrated with their Mothers, at the Mother Daughter Breakfast, the joy and love that comes from connectedness and right rela onships.
I offer sincere thanks to all staff involved, who gave so generously in me and effort, to the success of these experiences and most especially to our Year Co‐ordinators: Ms Gallen, Ms Davidson, Mrs Meecham and Ms Diamond, each of whom is doing an amazing job.
Year 8’s this week are making decisions about their future pathways in considering their elec ve choices for Year 9. We thank Year 8 Co‐ordinator, Mrs Strachan for her guidance of the girls through this process.
Year 10 Camp
Gracious God
We celebrate the mystery that exists in the miracle of life, crea on and all things and thus seek to be er understand our connectedness.
For the love of our world and its future, we seek to pursue right rela onships with, and the wellness of all beings, all things and all crea on.
In so doing, we seek to use our God given talents in the pursuit of excellence and in the loving and responsible service and empowerment of all.
These are our ENDURING PURSUITS.
With your grace may we find what we seek in your name. Amen.

YPWB has taken the idea of a gap year and turned it on its head to become a 'start year'. During your start year - after Year 12 - you'll get to volunteer for four to seven months in Asia/Pacific working in the areas of teaching, community work or sports coaching. To find out more visit http://www.lattitude.org.au/why-volunteer/ypwb Chris Rynne - Business and Careers Coordinator
Wxutà|Çz axãá Year 11 Drama students are viewing David Williamson's latest play, Managing Carmen, at QPAC on Wednesday 17 October. The production begins at 7.30 but students are asked to be there at 7.05pm to collect their tickets from their teachers. Parents are asked to be at the theatre for pick-up at 9.30pm sharp. XÇzÄ|á{ axãá Congratulations to Elizabeth Stephen of Year 10 for her award of Highly Commended in the 2012 Literary Competition, which is a state-wide competition sponsored by James Cook University and the Independent Education Union. She will receive her award on Wednesday Oct 17 and her photo along with the other winners will be placed in ‘The Independent Voice’, the journal of IEUA-QNT. Elizabeth won in the short story section for Years 9 and 10. Congratulations to her and her English teacher, Peita Ward. The Year 10s are currently studying ‘Romeo and Juliet’. On Oct 26 the Shake and Stir Company will entertain the girls with imaginative excerpts from this tragic play. This will greatly enhance their learning experience and assist them to creatively explore characters and themes for their upcoming digital stories. In addition the Year 9s are studying poetry. Grin and Tonic are performing poetry for the girls on October 19 and Graham Nunn, a local renowned poet, (as a Writer in Residence) is working with the girls as they write their own poetry. He will work with the girls over three days in their class groups as they prepare their multi-modal presentations of original poetry, photos, images and music. We are very much interested in viewing the final productions at the beginning of next month. Graham will be here on Oct 25, 26 and 29. Mrs Logan’s Year 11 English class is off to the theatre on the night of Oct 17 to view the new David Williamson’s play ‘Managing Carmen’, which they are currently studying. Anna McGahan, one of the actresses, will come to the school to talk with the students about her experiences. We are gathering interest for a new subject for Year 12 next year: English Extension. This is a high level theory based subject requiring students with good skills in English and good independent study habits. I am holding a meeting on this Friday lunchtime to give information about this subject. Girls who are interested will take a letter home for parental approval. The girls would need to continue on with subject English and ‘drop’ another subject. Mrs Catherine O’Donoghue - English Coordinator

fÑÉÜàá WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá BSGSA Sport Basketball Round 5 This Week’s Draw: Open A vs All Hallow’s(1) at Loreto (MWC)
Open B vs Our Lady’s College at Clem Jones Centre, Carina (bus)
Intermediate A vs Mt St Michael’s at Clem Jones Centre, Carina (bus)
Intermediate B vs San Sisto at San Sisto, Carina (bus)
Junior A vs Lourdes Hill at Lourdes Hill, Hawthorne (bus)
Junior B vs St Rita’s at Loreto (outside court)
Round 4 Results Open A defeated All Hallows’ (2) 46 to 4
It was obvious from the start of the match that Loreto had superior skills and knowledge of game play. Teamwork was excellent with all players working hard in defence and maintaining a strong intensity on court. Taili Beausang was outstanding in attack, while Kristina Sams, Anna Cooke and Madeleine Dinnen contributed effectively throughout the game. A very strong win, well done!
Open B were defeated by All Hallows’ 32 to 16
Loreto produced a fantastic final quarter of the match, fighting hard to the end to try and snatch victory. In windy, outdoor conditions it was difficult to maintain a consistent run of play. Aiwen Lee had a strong game in defence. Chiara Asnicar and Sam Vickerman ran the ball hard down the court and maintained strong pressure on All Hallows’.
Intermediate A defeated Brigidine 40 to 16
Loreto started well and continued to improve throughout the match, applying strong pressure in defence. Teamwork was exceptional and intensity in defence was maintained throughout the match. Prue Hempel, Erin Stafford and Julia Edwards rebounded strongly, with Jemima Moore, Mia Page and Emily Taylor displaying aggressive offense. Quality of passing can still improve and this can be the focus of next match. A very classy win!
Intermediate B defeated All Hallows’ 42 to 8
As the score indicates this was a very one-sided match. Loreto’s defence was suffocating and forced many easy turnovers and intercepts. Stephanie Samios produced many steals while Georgia Christie drove the ball strongly to the basket and followed up with rebounding.
Junior A defeated Mt St Michael’s 38 to 26
Loreto continue to improve each week and are combining well in attack and defence. Determination is obvious and all players worked hard for this win. Brigitte Mastry, Brianna O’Donnell and Ashley Parker were tireless in their efforts. Another pleasing victory for the season. Well done!

Junior B defeated All Hallow’s 26 to 18
Loreto displayed improved ball movement down the court in attack and this allowed them to score several quick baskets in transition. All girls maintained solid pressure over the ball in defence producing some good turn overs. Alex White had a strong game in defence and it was pleasing to see the shooting accuracy of all players has improved from previous matches. Well done, girls! Nyree Wood - Basketball Coordinator

There were two superb goals scored by Erin Littler and Emily O’Brien. The defence displayed great team work and proved that at times the girls could match it with teams who have been playing together for years. Great work girls and look for-ward to Round 2 on Saturday. Coach: Oliver Chamber
Under 15 - It was the first game for many of the Under 15 Loreto girls. The Loreto Warriors defeat Brigidine 9 to 6. Nerves and excitement were clear from the first blow of the whistle. At the end of the first quarter the girls realised they were winning but didn’t realise they had three more quarters to play. Despite some defensive mistakes the girls managed to take the counterattack opportunities and concede most chances. Shenae Megahey was outstanding in goals stealing all balls that were in her proximity. Rebecca Smith played an outstanding game scoring the majority of the goals giving the girls a first game win. Coach: James Duffy
Under 18 - The Under 18 team were defeated by Brisbane Girls Grammar School. The Loreto girl had an overall great first game of the season. They played their hardest and scored three points against what is usually one of the toughest teams in the Division. Although they were nine points down everyone played their hardest and had excellent team spirit. Well done girls and will look forward to another challenging game next weekend. Coach: Mikaela Brogan
