In celebration of the National Architecture Week (NAW), we took a look at some of the most interesting

architectural structures that have shaped our cultural landscape.

1. Main Building – University of Santo Tomas

universit"/s administrative offices. onstructed in the *s, the building sports an eclectic st"le, combining

different st"les into one structure. 0he same st"le is used for the universit"/s main librar", also designed b"Nakpil.

buildings in the FEU comple> designed b" ablo Antonio. Antonio is the second architect to receive the National

(I) is a brainchild of Beandro Bocsin, one of the greatest master architects that the hilippines has produced.

has hosted foreign and local conventions, including the annual Awards Night of the &ilipino Academ" of =ovie

venue and houses its principal offices. Bike the I, the theater is onl" a part of the comple>, a sprawling

DD$hectare government owned structure.

0he National 0heater/s design is another work b" Beandro Bocsin and carries his signature st"le of the Efloating

volume,F which combines a heav" use of concrete with elevated structures. 0he result is a startling contrast of a

massive looking structure that seemingl" floats.

!esigned b" the =aosa brothers (=anuel, &rancisco, and 5ose), the #an =iguel orporation uilding serves

as the head office of one of the largest corporations in the hilippines. 0he building/s uni'ue design is inspired

b" the anaue rice terraces. Bandscaping is done b" the National Artist for Architecture in +?, Ildefonso

#antos, who is considered the father of hilippine landscape architecture.

. Pearl &arm Bea$h %esort

Bocated in #amal island of !avao it", the earl &arm each %esort is built on what was once a farm for

culturing pearls. A handiwork of &rancisco =aosa who was a strong advocate of indigenous architecture, the

resort/s design was adapted from the traditional stilt houses built along the coastline. In +*, =aosa received

the National Artist award for architecture.

uilt in *?, the building is designed b" arlos Arguelles in the International #t"le, with its emphasis on

rectilinear forms and plane surfaces stripped of ornamentation. Arguelles was also the architect behind the

=anila avilion 9otel and asino (formerl" =anila 9ilton) and the !evelopment ank of the hilippines uilding

in =akati.

A well$loved landmark not onl" for its design, the hilam Bife uilding houses an auditorium that has long served

as a venue for music and performance productions. 0he insurance compan" itself had moved its head office to

the Net Bima building in onifaco 1lobal it" last "ear.

14. The Mind Museum

0he =ind =useum in onifacio 1lobal it" is hard to miss. &or its sheer design alone, it is a landmark work from

the father and son team of Bor and ;d alma, and their architectural firm.

!ue to its amorphic form which mimics the cellular membrane, the museum has no singular facade that remains

the same when viewed all around. %ecentl", it won an international award from the +th annual 0hea Awards for

its design and e>hibitions, a first for a science museum in Asia.

@n an" given da", the Huellig uilding mesmeri8es with its ghostl" beaut". Its all$glass faade with barel"

discernible edges makes this premium$grade office building in =akati business district blend and even disappear

in its surrounding sk" and landscape.

the =akati sk"line. Its design is a collaboration between the local architectural firm 1& L artners Architects and

1o8ar lanners hilippines in collaboration with the international firm 2ohn edersen &o> Associates.

Bocated within the #= =all of Asia comple> in asa" it", =all of Asia Arena is the newest sports and events

arena in the metro after its official opening in ++. With a seating capacit" of ?, and a full$house capacit"

of +, J it rivals the #mart Araneta oliseum for the biggest indoor arena in #outheast Asia.

A regular pla"ing venue for the countr"/s maGor basketball leagues, the arena also serves as concert venue for

local and international performance artists. 0he arena/s distinctive look is designed b" the =iami$based

architectural firm Ar'uitectonica.

A landmark high$end condo proGect in onifacio 1lobal it", Pacific Plaza Towers stands out from among the

other lu>ur" condo towers in the area. Its e"e$catching twin tower curvilinear design is another handiwork b" the

Ar'uitectonica group (the same designer behind #= Aura remier and =all of Asia Arena) along with the %ecio

M asas Architects, a local firm with a solid portfolio of residential and commercial proGects, both here and
