Conversation Starter 130A• Today, the Chinese economy is much stronger than 30
years ago. During the past 30 years, the Chinese government has attracted foreign investment and given investors a lot of preferential policies. For example, they have given free land and reduced taxed. Therefore, a lot of international companies came to China and established their branches. That improved Chinese economy, and these companies got benefits too. What are some strengths and weaknesses of your home country’s economy?
(Juan)
Conversation Starter 130A• Some expert engineers have natural instincts for
engineering-related concepts. Some engineers, on the other hand, may develop such concepts through training and experimentation. For example, with natural instinct, an engineer may sense a calculation fault with just a quick glance. Do you think having natural instincts is necessary for engineering? What about for your major?
(Ahmad Emam/ Mechanical Engineering)
Conversation Starter 130B
• Some companies attempt to imitate their competing partners’ brilliant innovations and to adapt their new technology for their own use. In your country, are there any trademark, patent or copyright laws to prevent the abuse of the Intellectual property rights? Does the law really work in the developed market or economy patents?
• (Guanrong Chen, Intellectual Property Rights Law)
Conversation Starter 130B• Many people these days are facing problems
because of fraudsters. They usually attract people by showing them fake documents or impersonating someone else’s position. If you were a victim of fraud, would it be your mistake and the court will not help you to get your assets back, or are there some rules that can help you in this situation?
(Ahmad, law)

Listening Questions (Groups)
1. Where does the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle (KRT) live?
2. Why is the KRT important?3. What is a turtle excluder device?4. Why are some fisherman unhappy with
the device?5. Why do biologists support the device?
Notes Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle (KRT) > Gulf of Mexico = endangered HOWEVER, KRT making rebound > marine researchers in TX KRT = smallest sea turtle in the world KRT = important part of ecosystem, around since the dinosaurs T.E.D. (turtle excluder device) = helping turtles rebound T.E.D traps small sea creatures but releases bigger species Controversy = fisherman > lose some fish/shrimp biologists > fisherman don’t waste net space on sharks/turtles captive breeding also helps turtle rebound
