WARNINGSome dust created by power sanding, sawing, grind-ing, drilling, and other construction activities containschemicals known to the State of California to causecancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:

• Lead from lead-based paints.• Crystalline silica from bricks, cement, and

other masonry products.• Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated

lumber.

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending onhow often you do this type of work. To reduce yourexposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilatedarea, and work with approved safety equipment, suchas those dust masks that are specially designed to fil-ter out microscopic particles.

220V Operation

The Model G1073/G1073Z Bandsaw is suppliedwith a dual-voltage 110V/220V motor, prewiredfor 220V operation. Under normal use, the motordraws approximately 12 amps at 220V. We rec-ommend a 15 amp circuit breaker or slow-blowfuse for 220V. This should be satisfactory for nor-mal use, while providing enough protectionagainst damage caused by an overloaded circuit. If frequent circuit failures occur when using thebandsaw, contact our service department or yourlocal electrical contractor.

The Model G1073/G1073Z Bandsaw is not sup-plied with a power plug. We recommend using aNEMA-style L6-15 plug and outlet similar to theone shown in Figure 1. You may also “hard-wire”the bandsaw directly to your panel, provided youplace a disconnect near the machine.

110V Operation

If 110 volt operation is desired, refer to the wiringdiagram in the back of this manual. Under normaluse, the motor draws approximately 24 amps at110V. We recommend using a circuit breaker andwires rated for 30 amps. This should be satisfac-tory for normal use, while providing enough pro-tection against damage caused by power surges. If frequent circuit failures occur when using thebandsaw, contact our service department or yourlocal electrical contractor.

The Model G1073/G1073Z is not supplied with apower plug. It will be necessary to supply yourown standard 110V, 30 Amp grounded plug andreceptacle as shown in Figure 2.

SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS

Figure 1. Typical 220V 3-prong plug and outlet.

We do not recommend the use of extensioncords on 220V equipment. It is much better toarrange the placement of your equipment and theinstalled wiring to eliminate the need for exten-sion cords. Should it be necessary to use anextension, make sure the cord is rated HardService (Grade S) or better. Refer to the chart onpage 3 to determine the minimum gauge for theextension cord. The extension cord must alsocontain a ground wire and plug pin. Always repairor replace extension cords when they becomeworn or damaged.

Extension Cords

Be sure that your particular electrical config-uration complies with local and state codes. The best way to ensure compliance is tocheck with your local municipality orlicensed electrician.

Page 8: 16'' BANDSAW - Grizzlycdn0.grizzly.com/manuals/g1073z_m.pdfG1073/G1073Z 16'' Bandsaw -1-Table Of Contents PAGE 1. ... Manual Before Operating This Equipment Indicates an imminently

Figure 2.

Under no circumstances should the groundingpin from any three-pronged plug be removed. If itwill not fit the outlet, have the proper outletinstalled by a qualified electrician.

Check with a qualified electrician or one of ourservice personnel if the grounding instructionsare not completely understood, or if you are indoubt as to whether the tool is properly grounded.Use only 3-wire extension cords that have 3-prong grounding type plugs and 3-hole recepta-cles that accept the tool’s plug, similar to that inFigure 2.

Repair or replace damaged or worn cords imme-diately.

Grounding

In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance forelectric current to reduce the risk of electricshock. This tool is equipped with an electric cordhaving an equipment grounding conductor. Aplug with a grounding pin must be plugged into amatching outlet that is properly installed andgrounded in accordance with all local codes andordinances.

Improper connections of the electrical-groundingconductor can result in risk of electric shock. Theconductor with green or green and yellow stripedinsulation is the electrical grounding conductor. Ifrepair or replacement of the electric cord or plugis necessary, do not connect the equipmentgrounding conductor to a live terminal.

We have covered some basic electricalrequirements for the safe operation of yourbandsaw. These requirements are not nec-essarily comprehensive. You must be surethat your particular electrical configurationcomplies with local and state codes. Ensurecompliance by checking with your localmunicipality or a licensed electrician.

This equipment must begrounded. Verify that anyexisting electrical outletand circuit you intend toplug into is actuallygrounded. Under no cir-cumstances should thegrounding pin from anythree-pronged plug beremoved. Serious injurymay occur.

Clean up Site Considerations

1. Floor Load: Your Model G1073/G1073Z 16''Bandsaw represents a large weight load in asmall footprint. Most commercial floors aresuitable for the Model G1073/G1073Z. Someresidential floors may require additional buildup to support both machine and operator.

2. Working Clearances: Consider existing andanticipated needs, size of material to beprocessed through each machine, andspace for auxiliary stands, work tables orother machinery when establishing a loca-tion for your bandsaw.

3. Lighting and Outlets: Lighting should bebright enough to eliminate shadow and pre-vent eye strain. Electrical circuits should bededicated or large enough to handle amper-age requirements. Outlets should be locatednear each machine so power or extensioncords are clear of high-traffic areas. Observelocal electrical codes for proper installationof new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

The unpainted surfaces are coated with a waxyoil to protect them from corrosion during ship-ment. Remove this protective coating with a sol-vent cleaner or citrus-based degreaser such asGrizzly’s G7895 Degreaser. Avoid chlorine-based solvents as they may damage paintedsurfaces should they come in contact. Alwaysfollow the usage instructions on the product youchoose for clean up.

Do not use gasoline orother petroleum-basedsolvents to clean with. They have a low flashpoint which makes themextremely flammable. Arisk of explosion andburning exists if theseproducts are used .Serious personal injurymay occur.

Make your shop “child safe.”Ensure that your workplaceis inaccessible to childrenby closing and locking allentrances when you areaway. Never allow visitors inyour shop when assembling, adjusting, or operatingequipment.

Do not smoke while usingsolvents. A risk of explo-sion or fire exists and mayresult in serious personalinjury.

Many of the solventscommonly used to cleanmachinery can be toxicwhen inhaled or ingest-ed. Always work in well-ventilated areas far frompotential ignition sourceswhen dealing with sol-vents. Use care when dis-posing of waste rags andtowels to be sure they donot create fire or environ-mental hazards.

SECTION 4: ASSEMBLY

Figure 3. Attaching motor mount bracket.

Figure 4. Motor attached to motor mount bracket.

Stand (G1073)

The stand assembly on the Model G1073 isshown here. If you have the Model G1073Z, fol-low the same instructions for mounting the motor, bandsaw to stand, and the anti-vibration pads.Disregard the steps that do not apply.

To ease assembly, build the stand upside downon a bench, then place it upright on the floor. Donot fully tighten any of the bolts until directed todo so in the next section.

Sometimes sheet metal parts have a tendency to''spring'' after they are formed. For this reason, you may need to use a little extra force to alignholes to insert bolts.

2. Position the motor so the pulley is over therectangular hole in the stand top as shown inFigure 4. Secure with four (4) 5⁄16"-18 x 1"carriage bolts, 5⁄16" washers, and 5⁄16"-18 nutsprovided.

To assemble the stand:

1. Flip the top of the stand upside-down.Position the motor mounting bracket so thatit sits over the four (4) evenly spaced holesin the top. Bolt the bracket to the stand withtwo (2) 3⁄8"-16 x 1" hex bolts, 3⁄8" washers, and 3⁄8"-16 nuts provided. Hand tighten fornow so your assembly looks like Figure 3.

Keep loose clothingrolled up and out of theway of machinery andkeep hair pulled back.

Wear safety glasses dur-ing the entire assemblyprocess. Failure to com-ply may result in seriouspersonal injury.

Disconnect power to themachine when perform-ing any maintenance orassembly. Failure to dothis may result in seriouspersonal injury.

Blade Tension

Blade Tracking

SECTION 5: ADJUSTMENTS

To adjust the tension:

1. Loosen the upper and lower guide blocksand lower the upper guide block down to thetable. With moderate tension already on theblade, turn the bandsaw ON.

2. Release the tension one quarter of a turn ata time. Do this very slowly. When you seethe bandsaw blade start to flutter, stopdecreasing the tension.

3. Now, slowly increase the tension until theblade stops fluttering. Tighten the tensionone quarter of a turn.

There are two ways to track a bandsaw blade:Center Tracking and Coplanar Tracking.Center Tracking is the fastest and easiest, but notthe most precise.

Center Tracking:

1. Disconnect the bandsaw from the powersource and adjust the upper and lower guideassemblies away from the blade. Refer toPage 18 for adjustment details.

2. Loosen the lock collar on the tracking controlknob shown in Figure 17. Turn the trackingcontrol knob clockwise/counterclockwisewhile turning the upper wheel by hand untilthe blade stays centered on the rubber tire.

Keep loose clothingrolled up and out of theway of machinery andkeep hair pulled back.

Wear safety glasses dur-ing the entire adjust-ments process. Failureto comply may result inserious personal injury.

Disconnect power to themachine when perform-ing any maintenance orassembly. Failure to dothis may result in seriouspersonal injury.

If the tension seems correct, turn the bandsawOFF and make the other adjustments, and testrun. If the blade does not cut properly, the tensionmay be incorrect. Readjust the tension. Newblades often stretch with use. However, it helps toalways remove the tension from the blade whennot in use.

Guide Blocks

The guide blocks ensure that the blade is notpushed too far laterally. Perform steps 1-4 forboth upper and lower guide blocks. To adjust theguide blocks:

1. Loosen the thumbscrew securing the guideblock shaft shown in Figure 19.

2. Turn the adjustment nut so that the front ofthe guide blocks are just behind the gulletline (the hollow points) of the blade. Tightenthe thumbscrew.

3. Loosen the guide block thumbscrews andadjust the gap between the blocks and theblade to .004" (about the same thickness asa dollar bill). See Figure 19.

4. Tighten the thumbscrews.

4. A stop cap covers the positive stop. A pre-determined thickness in the end of this capwill automatically allow the table to tilt towardthe column of the saw 10° when this cap isremoved as shown Figure 21.

Always disconnectpower to the machinewhen making adjust-ments. Failure to do thismay result in seriouspersonal injury.

The positive stop under the table allows you torepeatedly square up the table after adjusting thetable tilt.

To adjust this positive stop so the table willreturn perpendicular (90°) to the blade afterangle cutting:

To remove the blade:

1. Release tension on the blade by turning thetension control knob counterclockwise.

2. Remove the table insert and table pin.

3. Adjust upper and lower guide blocks awayfrom the blade.

4. Put on leather gloves to protect your handsfrom the sharp teeth of the blade.

5. Open the upper and lower wheel covers andslide the blade off both wheels. Use caution-the blades are sharp!

6. Rotate the blade 90° so it will slide throughthe slot in the table as shown in Figure 23.

When removing or installing wide blades, it maybe convenient to completely remove the upperand lower guide blocks. Be sure to replace thembefore cutting. To replace the blade:

1. Slide the blade through the table slot, ensur-ing that the teeth are pointing down towardthe table.

If the teeth will not point downward in any ori-entation, the blade is inside out. Put onheavy gloves, remove the blade, and twist itinside out.

Wear gloves and safety goggles when han-dling blades. Coiled blades spring open asthey are uncoiled and could cause deepcuts or lacerations.

2. Slip the blade through the upper and lowerguides, and mount it over the upper andlower wheels.

3. Apply tension, then check and adjust track-ing.

4. Adjust the upper and lower guide blocks andsupport bearings.

5. Close the wheel covers and latch them.

6. Replace the table insert and table pin, beingsure not to use excessive force.

Always disconnectpower to the machinewhen changing blades.Failure to do this mayresult in serious person-al injury.

Figure 28. Blade leading away from line of cut.

Blade Lead

Most bandsaw blades will not appear to cutstraight when using the fence or miter gauge. This is called “lead.” (See Figure 28.) Leadoccurs (1) if the blade tension is incorrect, (2) ifthe teeth are dull on one side, or (3) if the teethare set heavier on one side of the blade than theother.

If you notice that your blade is not cuttingstraight (i.e. leading) while using the fence ormiter gauge:

1. Check that the miter slot is parallel to theblade line.

2. Check that you have proper blade tension. Ifthe blade tension is correct and it is not con-venient to replace the blade, compensate forlead by skewing the fence or adjusting thetable.

To skew your fence:

1. Make a piece of scrap wood that is approxi-mately 3⁄4" thick x 3" wide x 17" long. On awide face of the board, draw a straight lineparallel to the long edge.

2. Slide the fence out of the way and cut free-hand along the line. Stop at the halfwaypoint. Turn the bandsaw off and wait for theblade to stop.

3. Clamp the board to the bandsaw table with-out moving it. Now slide the fence over tothe board so it barely touches one end of theboard.

4. Loosen the two skewing cap screws on topof the fence. Figure 27.

5. Skew the fence left or right so it is parallel tothe edge of the scrap piece. You may needto readjust the fence locking mechanisms togain maximum adjustment.

6. While maintaining the skew, tighten the capscrews.

5. Slide the fence along the rails. It should slideeasily.

6. Lock the handle again and check fence posi-tion. The front of the fence should lock justbefore the rear of the fence as the handle ispushed down through its full motion.

G1073/G1073Z 16'' Bandsaw -25-

Figure 29. Holding a straightedge across both wheels.

Wheel Alignment

Wheel alignment is one of the easiest ways toensure you get optimal performance from yourbandsaw. When wheels are aligned, or coplanar, the bandsaw is more likely to cut straight withoutwandering; and vibration, heat, and blade wearare considerably decreased because the blade isautomatically balanced on the wheel. This isknown as “Coplanar Tracking.”

To verify if the the upper and lower wheels arecoplanar:

1. With the blade on and properly tensioned, hold a straightedge close to the center ofboth wheels. Make sure it fully extendsacross them as in Figure 29.

To compensate for lead if making straightcrosscuts using the miter gauge, you willneed to shift the table. To do this:

1. On a scrap piece of wood, mark a line that isperpendicular to the front edge. Startingwhere the line begins, cut the board by push-ing it through the blade with the miter gauge.

2. Loosen the table mounting bolts according tothe instructions about “Table Parallelism” onpage 20. Shift the table to compensate forthe blade lead.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the blade cutsstraight when wood is pushed through withthe miter gauge.

NOTICELead adjustments will change when newblades are mounted in the saw.

NOTICEIf the table is shifted, the fence will be affect-ed since it is attached.

2. A perfectly coplanar set of wheels will allowthe straightedge to touch the top and bottomof the outside rims on each wheel. If this isthe case with your wheels, then they arecoplanar.

3. If your wheels are not coplanar, check themfor adjustment by placing the straightedgeon the upper wheel first – ensuring that ittouches both the top and bottom rim – andadjust the tracking knob to see how thestraightedge lines up with the lower wheel.

If the straightedge only touches the top rim ofthe lower wheel, then the upper wheel needsto be shimmed.

If the straightedge only touches the bottomrim of the lower wheel, then the lower wheelneeds to be shimmed.

Shimming a wheel.

1. Adjust the tracking knob so the top wheel isparallel with the bottom wheel. With thestraightedge touching both points of thewheel that does not need to be adjusted, measure the distance away from the incor-rect wheel with a fine ruler. See Figure 30.The distance you measured with the ruler isthe distance the wheel must be corrected.

2. Adjust the setscrews in or out very slightly(over-adjustment will cause the tension rodto bind). Use your straightedge from the pre-vious section to make the upper wheel paral-lel with the lower wheel.

3. Tighten the four cap screws and check wheelalignment.

1. Loosen the four cap screws securing the twosliding gibs to the body behind the upperwheel, as shown in Figure 32.

Adjusting Parallelism

To adjust a parallelism problem (i.e., if the middleof the wheels are coplanar, but the sides are not,Figure 31.) follow these steps.

Sliding GibFigure 30. Measuring wheel difference.

3. Replace wheel, any remaining washers andthe securing nut. It is important to tighten theblade as it will be used during operationbefore you check the wheels for beingcoplanar. In other words, it is possible thatthe wheels may be coplanar with the bladeloose, then be pulled out of alignment whenit is tightened.

4. The first time you get the wheels coplanar itis a good idea to place a mark on eachwheel where you held the straightedge. Thisassures repeated accuracy every time youadjust your wheels.

2. Remove the blade from the saw, then thesecuring nut and washers from the wheelthat needs to be shimmed. Now remove thewheel. Use the washers that were behindthe securing nut for shims. Measure howmany you will need to equal the space ofyour gap and place them on the mountingshaft.

NOTICEWhen wheels are properly coplanar, the blademay not be centered on the crown of the wheel, but it will be balanced.

Blade Selections

The Model G1073/G1073Z 16" Bandsaw accepts113" blades. The tension adjustment will accom-modate blades up to a maximum length of 114"and down to a minimum length of 112" (approx.).

A bandsaw blade is a delicate piece of steel thatis subjected to tremendous strain. Take care ofyour blades and they will last a long time. Be sureyou use quality blades of the proper width for thevarious types of cutting operations.

Always use the widest blade possible for theworkpiece you are cutting. Use narrow bladesonly for sawing small, abrupt curves and for fine, delicate work. Grizzly supplies bandsaw blades invarious widths for this saw. Please refer to ourcurrent catalog for prices and ordering informa-tion.

Many conditions may cause a bandsaw blade tobreak. Blade breakage is, in some cases, unavoidable because of the peculiar stresses towhich bandsaw blades are subjected. Bladebreakage is also due to avoidable causes.Avoidable breakage is most often the result ofpoor care or judgement on the part of the opera-tor when mounting or adjusting the blade or sup-port guides. The most common causes of bladebreakage are:

• Forcing or twisting a wide blade around acurve of short radius.

• Feeding material too fast.

• A dull or defective blade.

• Excessive tension.

• Improperly adjusted blade guides.

• Continuously running the bandsaw when notin use.

SECTION 6: OPERATIONS

Keep loose clothingrolled up and out of theway of machinery andkeep hair pulled back.

Wear safety glasses dur-ing the entire operationprocess. Failure to com-ply may result in seriouspersonal injury.

Disconnect power to themachine when perform-ing any maintenance orassembly. Failure to dothis may result in seriouspersonal injury.

Cutting Curves

When cutting curves, simultaneously feed andturn the stock carefully so that the blade followsthe layout line without being twisted. If a curve isso abrupt that it is necessary to repeatedly backup and cut a new kerf, use either a narrowerblade or a blade with more set. A blade with moreset can cut relatively tighter radii, though the cutis usually rougher than cuts produced by a bladewith medium set.

Always make short cuts first, then proceed to thelonger cuts. Relief cuts will also reduce thechance that the blade will be pinched or twisted.Relief cuts are made through the waste portion ofthe workpiece and are stopped at the layout line.As you cut along the layout line, waste wood isreleased from the workpiece, alleviating anypressure on the back of the blade. Relief cutsalso make backing the workpiece out easier, ifneeded.

The table below lists blade widths and corre-sponding minimum radii each blade will cut:

Width Radius1⁄8'' ................................3⁄16''3⁄16'' ..............................5⁄16''1⁄4'' ................................5⁄8''3⁄8'' ................................11⁄2''1⁄2'' ................................21⁄2''5⁄8'' ................................4''3⁄4'' ................................51⁄2''

Resawing

Resawing is the process of cutting a board intotwo or more thinner boards. The maximum boardwidth that can be resawn is limited by the maxi-mum cutting height of the bandsaw. Maximumcutting height for this bandsaw is 73⁄4''.

Use common sense when resawing. Attemptingto resaw too wide or too dense of a board mayput excessive strain on the blade and be danger-ous.

Blade selection is an important considerationwhen resawing. Generally, the wider the blade, the better. In most applications, a hook or skiptooth style will be sufficient. Also, since mostresawn lumber will be planed smooth, you canchoose blades with fewer teeth per inch (from 3to 6). While blades with fewer teeth per inch pro-duce rougher cuts, these types of blades offerlarger gullet capacities for clearing sawdust, lessheat buildup, and yield more horsepower pertooth.

To resaw lumber:

1. The bandsaw must be adjusted correctly.See Blade Adjustment section.

2. The table must be square to the blade. SeeTable Adjustment section.

3. Use the widest blade available. The blademust also be in good condition.

4. Use a fence to guide work.

5. Draw a reference line on the edge of theboard.

6. Support ends of the board if necessary.

7. Feed work slowly and evenly.

Using this machine pro-duces sawdust which maycause allergic reactionsand respiratory problems.Use an approved dustmask to protect yourselffrom these hazards!

SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE

V-Belts

To ensure optimum power transmission from themotor to the blade, the V-belt must be in goodcondition and operate under proper tension. Thebelts should be checked for cracks, fraying andwear. Belt tension should be checked at leastevery 3 months; more often if the bandsaw isused daily.

The V-belt is accessed via the bottom cover:

1. Squeeze the center of the V-belt.

2. Note the amount of deflection. Deflectionshould be approximately 3⁄4". See “V-BeltAdjustment” instructions.

The table and other non-painted surfaces on theModel G1073/G1073Z should be protectedagainst rust and pitting. Wiping the saw cleanafter every use ensures that wood dust is notallowed to trap moisture against bare metal sur-faces.

The table can be kept rust-free with regular appli-cations of products like SLIPIT® or Boeshield® T-9. For long term storage you may want to consid-er products like Kleen Bore's Rust Guardit™. Seethe current Grizzly catalog for more on theseproducts.

Table

Shielded and pre-lubricated ball bearings requireno lubrication for the life of the bearings. All bear-ings are standard sizes, and replacements canbe purchased from our parts department or bear-ing supply store.

As for other items on this machine, such asadjustment controls, an occasional “shot” of lightoil is just about all that is necessary. Beforeapplying, however, wipe off any sawdust with aclean cloth, towel or dry paint brush, and spray onthe lubricant. Ensure that oil does not get on thepulleys or V-belt because it could cause belt dete-rioration and slipping.

Lubrication

Always be aware of the condition of your band-saw. Routinely check the condition of the follow-ing items and repair or replace as necessary:

• Loose mounting bolts

• Worn switch

• Worn or damaged blade

• Worn or damaged support bearings or guidebearings

Miscellaneous

Always disconnectpower to the machinewhen making adjust-ments. Failure to do thismay result in seriouspersonal injury.
