PRESIDENT’S REPORT FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE 2014

Still busy, busy, busy. Whoever said that bowlers were idle old people? We are having

the time of our lives with lots of activities to keep us on our toes. The month of May saw

the Seaside Real Estate Day, The final of the Ladies ‘B’ Singles, Centaur Day and the

Andersen’s Carpet Day.

We also held our wonderful Maytime Triples Day and from the comments received every-

one who attended this special day it was certainly a great success. It was lovely to see

that the prizes were shared between our Club and the Visitors as were the raffle prizes.

I extend sincere thanks to everyone who made this day so special. Thanks to our Spon-

sors. Poole & Partners and the Pelican Waters Bowls Club. Thanks to our wonderful Um-

pires, Games Director, Raffle Coordinator and all the associated helpers on the day.

Also the Staff of the Club. The lovely lunch was appreciated by everyone. The keepers

of our greens had them in pristine condition which made playing such fun. Thank you to

all the players without whom there would not be such a day.

Some of our ladies also played at other clubs in the district, spreading our friendliness out

and about and hopefully encouraging other clubs to visit us more often.

June is our early winter start. From 4 June until the end of August the ladies will com-

mence their playing day at 12.30pm to keep the winter chill from our bones in the late

afternoon.

The 20th was our special District in-visit with friends from Rockhampton coming down for

some fun. The day went off wonderfully and all those in attendance appeared to enjoy

themselves. What a wonderful lot of ladies. We certainly hope they come to visit again.

Perhaps some of us may get the opportunity to visit with them in the future.

Thank you once again to all the valiant helpers who come along at every opportunity to

lend a hand without your help we would fail. Well done all.

Till next time – see you on the greens.

“The Club of Friendship”

On Saturday 14th we had our yearly volunteer clean-up day around the club, it

was good to see about 20 volunteers coming to help clean the Club inside and

out and also to paint the outside of the Club, which was finished off by Noel

Harm’s men the next week. Thank you all for your time and effort.

Our mixed Seafood Day was a little disappointing with only 22 teams compet-

ing, but all who played said it was a great day of bowling and competition with

Adrian Biggs’ team taking out the day.

Don’t forget we have our Carnival coming up in July and I would love to see

more of our own teams competing in these events.

See you around “The Pelican”

Secretary's Report :

Last month we finished painting the exterior of the Club House. This, together with a

working bee has given the building a cleaner fresher look and the impression that

someone does care. Thanks to those members who contributed.

The next stage in our re-development is the Club House extension to cater for the

re-location of the Administration and Games Offices. To complete this project it may

need to get funding assistance in the form of a Government grant. Unfortunately,

funds from traditional source such as the Gambling Community Benefit Funds and

Major Infrastructure Grants are significantly reduced hard to come by.

Never-the-less, we are actively looking and updating our business plan for when

the next opportunity does arise. In the meantime we have lodged an application for

a Sunshine Coast Council Community Partnership Program grant which recognizes

the contributions that clubs such as ours make towards the Council’s commitment to

provide safe and healthy recreation facilities and venues for community groups to

enjoy social interaction. If successful we will receive a contribution from the Council

towards our operating costs. This will improve cash flow and increase our capacity

to fund an additional loan for the proposed extensions.

Despite increasing costs, we continue to trade profitable - thanks largely to the hard

work of our staff and volunteers - and our membership is relatively stable, contrary

to the nationally trend. While this is encouraging, the Board believes we need to

encourage and support Social Members if we are to prosper and provide adequate

facilities for our Bowling Members. This does not mean a change in focus. On the

contrary, the Board is committed to maintaining our Club as a traditional Bowling

Club while recognizing the important role our Social Members play in funding our

activities and achieving our objectives.

It is always nice to receive recognition for our efforts and it was it was particularly

nice to receive a very complimentary letter from two new members thanking our

Club Coaches for their help and support and the welcome they received on joining

our Club. Congratulations to Reg., John and Errol for their dedicated and

professional approach and thanks to Greg and Eleanor for taking the time to write.

We are still the "friendly club"

6 A MESSAGE FROM THE COACHING DEN JULY 2014

THIS MONTH TO OUR PENNANT AND CLUB COMPETITION PLAYERS

By now you should be visiting clubs that are hosting your pennant games. It is very important that you familiarize yourself and your team with the grass you will be playing on. It could be the difference in winning or losing your game. All greens are different, so you need to prepare your bowling to the green you are playing on. The only way to do that is Practice, Practice and more Practice at those clubs’ greens. Keep records on your performance on the green (say Kawana), weather on the day – windy, no rain, heavy dew and so on. Use a note book and record things for example – extra grass on forehand needed, backhand the same, slower green, had to really swing to get to the full length, little to no turn on the bowl at the end. Of course pending on the day you play things could be changed, but maybe not. Start your constructive training minimum length. When you are happy about your bowling extend your length and so on. Leads also to train with your Jacks. Work on weight control and grass until you get it right. It’s a good idea to work in pairs and later your full team. Team play is a different game. You need good communication, get the mind focused on your game play each shot to win, work with your bowlers, talk to one another, help each other. SMILE, GIVE THEM SUPPORT. If you’re not sure, get your coach to make up some drills for you. Remember short bowls are out, crossing the head is out, unless your Skip asks you to do it. Don’t forget to call the clubs and find out when you can use the greens. Some charge, a few others no charge. WINNERS ARE GRINNERS. HAPPY BOWLING Till next month, Coach Ken.

Take the Time! And see the results.

MIXED SEAFOOD DAY

7 THE DANGER BOWL Supplied by: Robyn Schey

Our skip he stood the mat

Our third was at the head

The last end – one bowl to play

And just by one we led.

We only just held that one shot

About jack -hi it lay

If it were moved an inch or two

We could then lose the day.

“Which one is the danger bowl?”

Our skip inquired in manner grand

Our third replied with candour bold

“It's in your bloody hand”
