Transcript of 15.the sun, moon and stars
Planets A planet is a round object that moves around the sun
in a fixed path called orbit.
Planets do not have any light of their own. They reflect the light of the sun that falls on them.
The Earth moves around the sun.
The Earth is a planet.
Solar System The sun and eight planets are parts of solar system.
The eight planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Facts about Planets Mercury is the smallest planet.
The Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is the only planet known to have life on it.
Jupiter is the largest planet.
Saturn is the lightest
planet; if there was a
bathtub large enough
to dip Saturn, it would
float on water!
Satellite A satellite is an object that moves around a planet.
The moon is called the Earth’s satellite.
Like our Earth, other planets also have satellites.
Moon Moon is Earth’s satellite. The moon is our closest neighbour in the sky. Just as Earth moves around the sun, the Moon moves around
the Earth. It takes around 29 days to complete one circle
around the Earth. Moon has mountains. Huge holes on the moon are called as craters. There is no air on the moon. The moon does not have light of its own. It reflects the light of the sun. The shape of the moon seems to change every night.
Do you know? In 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human to
land and walk on the moon.
His foot prints on the moon will stay there forever!
There is no air or water to blow them off.
Stars Huge balls of fire very far away in the sky are called
stars.
They appear as tiny dots of light because they are very far away from us.
The Sun is also a star. It is a star closest to the Earth.
Telescope:
It is an instrument to look at the moon and the stars in the night sky.
It helps us to see far-off objects like the stars, the moon and the planets clearly.
Phases of Moon
New Moon Half Moon
Full Moon
The different shapes of the moon are called the phases of the moon.
Constellations Patterns or shapes formed by groups of stars in the sky
are called constellations.
The Great Bear and Orion (The Hunter) are two constellations you could see in night sky.
