Your InvitationDear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Australasian Tunnelling Society, I invite you to register and attend the 15th Australasian

Tunnelling Conference 2014 to be held in Sydney, Australia in September.

Australia has an exciting tunnelling history and has seen the completion of some iconic tunnel projects,

particularly urban road tunnels, that by world standards are very significant to the industry and many of

which are greater than four kilometres in length.

This is a positive reflection on Australia’s local expertise in planning, design and construction. We are seeing

these world-leading projects increasingly attracting (and retaining) international tunnelling professionals.

The theme of the conference is Underground space – solutions for the future and this is a pertinent reminder

and reflection on the innovation that is an integral component of this industry.

Eighty or more papers covering almost all aspects of tunnel design and construction will be presented at the conference, with many

discussing current projects in Australasia and from overseas. Expect to hear some very interesting technical papers in your discipline,

and we look forward to presenting a thought-provoking program, which encourages and stimulates discussions between authors and

delegates.

A number of high-profile keynote speakers have been invited to present at the conference and based on previous events in this

program, we anticipate a very high standard of speakers.

The program also offers invaluable workshops, together with a number of site visits and we implore all delegates to take advantage of

these unique offerings. Please refer to the program for details and make your booking early as places will be limited.

So on behalf of the organising committee I encourage you to attend this conference, either as a contributing author, delegate, sponsor

or exhibitor. This is an opportunity to broaden your knowledge-base and further contribute to this dynamic industry.

CONFERENCE TOURS

T3: Sydney Harbour Tunnel Control RoomSaturday 20 September

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel was constructed during the period 1988-1992and opened to traffic on 31 August 1992. Attendees will be privy to aunique visit to the hub of the tunnel – the control room where you will learnthe ins and outs of this extensive underground network followed by a tourthrough the tunnel via bus.

Did you know the tunnel consists of two tubes, each 2.3 km long with aroad width of 7 m? Or that is has a modified semi-transverse ventilationsystem which enables air to be moved longitudinally and transversely in thetunnel? Or that the tunnel experiences current average daily traffic volumesof 90,000 vehicles per day?

Well now you do, and here’s your chance to find out more!

Cost: A$44 per personLocation: Attendees will depart and return from the Hilton Sydney,

488 George Street, Sydney.Time: 9.30 am – 1.00 pmNumbers: Maximum 20. Strictly limited to those who pre-register.

T2: Sydney Water Bondi Underground WastewaterTreatment Facility and Bondi Beach stopover

Tuesday 16 September

Departing from the Hilton Hotel attendees will travel to the coast where theBondi Wastewater Treatment plant is located. After a brief Sydney Waterpresentation and induction you will walk down a 500 m decline tunnel tothe underground treatment facility.

Excavated from 1987-1989 within Hawkesbury Sandstone, the focus of thetour will be the 85 m long and 12.15 m wide flat-roofed pump stationcavern. You will return to the Hilton hotel after a short stop over at thefamous Bondi Beach.

Cost: A$44 per personLocation: Attendees will depart and return from the Hilton Sydney,

488 George Street, Sydney.Time: 1.00 pm – 5.30 pmNumbers: Maximum 25. Strictly limited to those who pre-register.Notes: Reasonable fitness and general mobility is required due to

some stairs and elevation change. Attendees will be walking down a decline tunnel to access the main caverns andexiting via lift or vehicle.Attendees are required to wear long-sleeve tops and trousers and closed-toe safety shoes.

T1: North Strathfield Rail Underpass TunnelTuesday 16 September

The North Strathfield Rail Underpass Project involves the construction of arail underpass at North Strathfield, platform upgrades and a new aerialconcourse at Concord West Station. The underpass and associated trackswill improve network reliability for freight and passenger trains by removingthe need for freight trains to cross over the existing tracks on the MainNorth Line.Following a brief induction and presentation of the very shallow covertunnel project and survey monitoring, attendees will proceed on sitethrough gate NS1 for a guided tour of the project in its current form.

Cost: No costLocation: Attendees are to make their own way to the North

Strathfield Station – Queen Street side, Gate 8 office.Time: 10.00 am – 12.00 pmNumbers: Maximum 30. Strictly limited to those who pre-register. Notes: Attendees are required to wear long-sleeve tops and

trousers and closed-toe safety shoes. Safety glasses, gloves and hard hats are also required and will be provided if attendees are not able to bring their own.

T4: Vehicle Access and Pedestrian Safety Project(VAPS) at the Opera House – Undergroundspace development under Australia’s MostIconic Building

Saturday 20 September

This exciting and unique opportunity will allow attendees to kit up and takea walk through the nearly completed structure under the Sydney OperaHouse. Starting with an induction and presentation of the project in 3D animationattendees will gain an understanding of the scope of works and challengesfaced during the development. A focus on some of the highlights withrespect to tunnelling and developing underground space will give greatinsight to the massive operation. Cost: No costLocation: Attendees are to make their own way to the Stage Door of

the Sydney Opera House located on the main thoroughfare. A walk from the Hilton Sydney will take 25 minutes.

Time: 9.00 am – 11.00 amNumbers: Maximum 20. Strictly limited to those who pre-register.Notes: All PPE will be provided except safety footwear. Attendees
