The German campaign against Fr ance, which startedon 10th May 1940 and ended only six weeks later,showed the wor ld the terrible power of the blitzkriegtaeties again and dealt the deeisive blow on the mil-itary of other 'na-ti'OlNi....l!iI~ h~d refused to eonsiderthe tank as lhe main strengtji of lheir troops.~e e~paign re~ulted in a complete ::';vc,.ie"'t~o-r~y~-for the Germans, the battle itself was not eompletelysatisfactory even to the victors. This was becausethe battle offered some problems eoneerning the tankand other points. For instanee, German light tanks,even though they exeeeded in number, proved no matehfor Allied heavy tanks protected with thiek armour,and the 3.7 em ant i-tank gun, one of the then Germanmain weapons,proved eff'ective under no circumstancesagainst the heavy tanks. From the eampaign, theGerrnans learned a lesson that quality mattered morethan quantity. rThe German Ordnance Bureau had not failed to anotieipate the problems. As early as 1937, the OrdnaneeBureau ordered Rheinmetall to develop a 5 emanti-tank gun. Designing was completed in 1938, butthe production line could not produce it in time forthe French campaign. The 5 em anti-tank gun model38 (60 calibres long}, as well as the 3.7 em ant i-tank gun model 35/36 also designed by Rheinmetall,was r ecogn iz ed in those days as an exceljent .weap·mt,.,.~....,~. --~-.;'

into the limelight under these circumstances.As a means to cope with Russian heavy tanks, theGermans . began to send the 7.5 em anti-tank gunmodel 39 (48 calibres long) to the front in theautumn of 1941 ~nd deliver the 7.5 em anti-tank gunmodel 40 (46 calibres long ), production type, to troopsin the summer of 1942.The 7.5 em anti-tank gun mode! 40 inherited moststr ong points in mechanism of the 5 em gun, Thelong barrel of 46 length calibre equipped with double-action rnuzzle brake w as . of one-piece constructionw ith no joint. (Paintlng of 7.5 em Gun)From 1935 to February 1943, German weapons andvehicles used dark yellow for Africa or Germangrey as their bacic colour. On 18th F ebruary 1943,the German authorities accepted only uniforrr darkyellow painting as a standard and after that manyweapons and vehicles were repainted in this way.However, various camouflages were worn accordingto the season or the terrain of the battlefield. Thesewere applied onto the basic colour by means of abrush or spray gun,To camouflage 7.5 em guns, flat white water paintwas generally used in winter and reddish brown or

dark green spots were painted on the dark yellowground in other seasons. Not ali 7.5 cm guns werecamouflaged in the same way. Their camouflagesseem to have varied according to the terrain of thefield. Toward the end of the war, uniform paintingin German grey was often seen, probably becausethe Germans became short of paint.
