Some people were educated but many were unable to read or write.
People were very religious
The country was organised into areas run by earls (like lords), but they often went to war with each other for control.
There were lots of diseases but people did not understand what caused them.
England could be said to be a country of opposites

England in 1066 was separate from Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The kings of England had enough trouble keeping their country together, without worrying about their neighbouring countries.
England became a strange place after the Romans had left in the 5th century AD.
What was England like in 1066?
The Saxons and Vikings invaded Britain. The knowledge the Romans had brought disappeared and it was like England had gone back in time!

England was divided into a series of earldoms, each ruled over by a powerful leader called an earl. These earls were meant to be loyal to the king.
Which of these earldoms do you think was the most important?
Clue: Winchester was the capital at this time.

There were 1.5 million people living in England in the 1060s.
How do you think life then was different from life today? (There are about 60 million people in
England today).
England in the 1060s
Most people lived in the countryside in small villages and worked on the land.
Much of the southern area of the country was covered in forest.
The country was ruled by Edward the Confessor.
