From The Desk of Father MacFrom The Desk of Father Mac It’s hard to imagine the horror of leprosy but in ancient Israel no one was more pitiable than a leper. Since the dis-ease was so contagious they had to live outside of town. They had to continuously shout “Unclean!” so people knew a leper was approaching and could clear the area. They couldn’t come within 50 yards of a healthy person. Lepers lived a life of total isolation. In today’s gospel we meet 10 lepers who stood at a distance and shouted, “Jesus, master, have pity on us!” And Jesus heard them. He told them to go and show themselves to the priests. In Jewish law a priest had to declare someone free from leprosy before that person could re-enter society. On their way to the priest, the 10 were healed but only one of them, realizing that he’d been healed, returned to thank Jesus and glorify God. Isn’t that amazing? Leprosy is a pain-ful disease and if you were healed you would surely notice. The other 9 simply took the healing for granted, and didn’t realize the incredible gift they’d just received. G.K. Chesterton said: “When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” Gratitude opens our hearts to God and oth-ers. Gratitude makes us more fully human. Gratitude sets our minds on eternity. Gratitude is the secret to true happi-ness. This is the great lesson from today’s gospel: Receive God’s gifts with gratitude! In his short novel The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis points out what can happen when gratitude is absent and we fall into complaining and fault-finding. The narrator observes that one of the ghosts in the story is complaining about every-thing, even when God is offering her heaven. His heavenly guide replies: "The question now is whether she is a grum-bler, or only a grumble... It begins with a grumbling mood, and yourself still distinct from it... And you, in a dark hour, may will that mood, embrace it. You can repent and come out of it. But there may come a day when you can do that no longer. Then there will be no you left to criticize the mood, nor even to enjoy it, but just the grumble going on forever like a machine." Gratitude changes everything. Sometimes we can miss the little gifts that God and others want to give us. But part of receiving the gifts of God with gratitude means recognizing and appreciating the little things. Here’s a practical way to grow in gratitude this week. Write a thank-you note. Maybe it will be a short note to your spouse expressing your gratitude. Maybe it can be a note to your parents thanking them for providing for you. Or it could be a note to a coworker or a friend who’s been there for you. Gratitude makes us more like God, and opens our hearts to a deeper relationship with him. Living with an attitude of gratitude is something we will never regret! YOURS IN CHRIST, REV. EBEN MACDONALD, PASTOR

“Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?”
L 17:18
Most of us live “easy” lives. We have food, shelter and clothing. We go on vacation every year and own a car or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions are usually the most grateful? Shouldn’t Stewardship be the other way around? Take time every day and thank God for all He has given you. Our Weekly Collection Goal is $13,000
Thank you

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN THE ARCHDIOCESE IS PARTICIPATING IN AN INDEPENDENT
COMPENSATION PROGRAM FOR VICTIM-SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL ABUSE OF MINORS BY PRIESTS
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles, along with five other dioceses in California, is participating in an independent program to offer persons who were victims of abuse as minors by diocesan priests, access to compensation as well as ac-
cess to counseling services if they chose. Those harmed many years ago and barred from filing lawsuits because of civil statutes of limitations will be eligible to make claims under the Independent Compensation Program for Victim-Survivors of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Priests. The Archdi-ocese’s participation in the program is part of a long-standing commitment to supporting and compensating vic-tims of abuse, the protection of children and the vulnera-ble, and the prevention of abuse and misconduct in Catho-lic parishes, schools and ministries. Nationally recognized mediators and private compensation program administra-tors, Kenneth R. Feinberg and Camille S. Biros will admin-ister the program. Funding for the program in our Archdio-cese will come from self-insured reserves, monies set aside for this purpose. We pray this new program provides another avenue toward healing and hope. For information about the program visit www.californiadiocesesicp.com.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Is October 20th 2019
ONE SUNDAY TO HELP THE WHOLE
WORLD
World Mission Sunday joins all Catholics of the world - all of us children of God - into one community of faith. At Mass that Sunday, we
recommit ourselves to our common vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries, through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and by giving
generously to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
This year, Pope Francis addresses his World Mission
Sunday message to us as we live out the adventure of being children of God. It is a revitalizing adventure. When all the children of God, at every stage of life,
reflect on the fact that our lives are a mission, our faith remains ever young.
As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday
here at home, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish, seminary, school and convent all over the world. Together with children of God in every
corner of the globe, we become voices for mission, providing the prayerful and financial support necessary
to bring the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the world.
