NEIGHBORS and PICNICS
I was seven years old back in 1952 when my family moved into the family home in St. Francis de Sales Parish in Parma.
Our street had some older homes on it, but the majority of houses like our own were newly constructed. Most were one
and-a-half story bungalows with the only difference being whether the house’s driveway was on the east or west side of
the house. In a way we were pioneers as new residents in a new neighborhood. I don’t know how it was decided (I was in
only the second grade) but groups of neighbors on a Sunday afternoon would drag picnic tables up the driveway on the
shady (east) side of a house and enjoy hamburgers and hotdogs, or barbecued ribs, etc., and other foods. We knew
everyone on the block and on nice summer evenings neighbors would gather on front porches or lawnchairs on their front
lawns to discuss whatever grown-ups talked about as we kids played in front.
As I have gone from being a seven year old to being in my seventies (our Pastor, the chicken farmer, is no spring chicken
either), I realize much of our world has changed. The new catch phrases of wisdom for children is “stranger danger,” “just
say ‘no,’” and a general feeling conveyed to children to beware. From only three TV channels of ABC, CBS, and NBC,
we now have literally hundreds of television stations that occupy our interest instead of gathering on porches and at
neighborhood picnics.
In this weekend’s gospel passage “a scholar of the law” who had asked Jesus, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal
life?” turns out to already know the answer to his own question. The scholar went on to respond to Jesus’ question to him
with the response to love God “...and your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus then continued with His parable or teaching story
which we usually refer to as The Good Samaritan. The whole point of Jesus’ teaching was that loving a neighbor means
responding appropriately to just about anyone who is in need such as in His parable, the man who “fell victim to robbers.”
We who live in the twenty-first century may not use the word scholar to refer to ourselves, but we today should understand
Jesus’ teaching about how to treat our neighbors. A number of days after our NBA national champion Cavaliers had their
welcome home/victory parade through downtown Cleveland, one of our local TV stations had a short presentation that
showed that some people in that huge, over one hundred thousand person crowd, knew how to respond to Jesus’ teaching
to love our neighbor. There were two different men in wheelchairs in that vast crowd as Lebron James passed by. And for
each of them as “the King” went by, the people around the wheelchair users raised up the fellows in their wheelchairs, so
that these handicapped persons could see Lebron James go by in the motorcade. Those who hoisted up the wheelchairs
with their occupants most likely did not themselves see Lebron go by, giving up their own opportunity for the sake of their
neighbor in the wheelchair. Toward the end of this news article one of the wheelchair persons gushed forth with his
happiness that “Lebron waved at me and gave me a thumbs up as he went by” Both of these handicapped wheelchair users
had been “loved” by their neighbors. Jesus said, “Go and do likewise.”
This weekend the picnic is not in a neighborhood driveway but rather here on our parish grounds. Our second annual
Parish Picnic begins after the 11:30 AM Mass and continues on to 4:00 PM. There is more information about our Parish
Picnic elsewhere in this bulletin. Come join your neighbors and fellow parishioners.

TASTE OF CEDAR
For the cost of a pair of socks, a big ice cream cone, a car
wash, folks in the eastside heights will be able to delight
their taste buds endlessly.
Imagine having a cookie, a cup cake, a Chinese delicacy, a
hamburger, a pizza slice, yogurt, more Chinese, an Italian
specialty, a gee whiz coffee, a jazzed-up chicken wing and
a fancy soup.
And then do it all over again, and for how much? $10. The
restaurants in Cedar Center are offering a “Taste” of their
businesses, July 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and all you
have to do is bring your appetite and a sawbuck.
Beyond that, Rick and Sharona will entertain you with their
lounge act and folks will get a chance to bid on baskets of
food and other goodies. Best of all, the money raised by
this program will help poor elderly people in South Euclid
get their houses fixed. Some elderly families will receive
gifts for Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Tickets for the event will be sold at South Euclid City Hall
in the office of Mayor Georgine Welo, at the South Euclid
Community Center, South Euclid Hardware and from all
the members of the South Euclid Commission on Aging.
For information call, Jim Lawless, president of the
commission at 216-291-4358. Other members are Carrie
Cense, Ronda Flowers, Chuck Ishler, Donald Lisy,
Gwendolyn Strayhan and Maydene Young.

With God, all things are possible...
I am blessed and excited to be named inaugural principal of
Corpus Christi Academy, a Catholic school and community
of faith for preschool through 8th grade. What a thrilling
time for the parish communities of both Sacred Heart of
Jesus and Saint Clare, who accepted the challenge to make
Corpus Christi possible. I am grateful to Fr. Ireland and Fr.
Klasinski as well as our steering committee and parents.
I began my Catholic journey at Saint Robert’s in Euclid
and at Saint Ignatius High School. With a bachelors degree
in Education at Ohio University, I started my teaching
career at Holy Trinity School in Avon as the Middle School
Social Studies teacher and Assistant to the Principal. Two
years ago I moved to the same positions at Saint Angela
Merici Parish School in Fairview Park and began my
Masters in Educational Leadership at Baldwin Wallace
University. I have a loving wife and two beautiful
daughters.
I am excited to have hired faithful, experienced and
passionate teachers to help launch Corpus Christi
Academy. With a solid academic curriculum as well as the
arts, we are ready to build a new legacy.
