Carols move to ovalWRITTEN BYPATRICK GLOVER

Hundreds of community members are expected to fl ock to the Roxby Downs

Area School oval for a night of Christmas cheer next month.

Carols have been held at the Rox-by Downs Community Christian Church (RDCCC) car park for the past two years.

However, with help from local ra-dio station RoxFM and other spon-sors, the event is set to grow into a larger community event known as Roxby Downs Community Carols in the Park.

“Everyone loves carols,” said the RDCCC’s Reverend Mary Lewis.

“It is great we can do something that will attract the entire community.”

RoxFM station manager Ross Wilson said Rev Lewis had done

a “fantastic job” of organising the carols over the past four years and he was looking forward to expand-ing it.

Mr Wilson encouraged everyone to bring down a picnic rug and en-joy some of the local performers showcasing their talents on Friday, December 4.

“(Local music teacher) Mark Richardson said he has a few stu-dents that will sing,” Mr Wilson said.

“Tony D’Arrigo will be singing, and apparently Kurt from the An-damooka Yacht Club has the voice of an angel and is putting some-thing together.

“ en there are other local art-ists, like Father John and Matt Green, who will be singing.

“Cassie Henry is another one that may sing – she has a wonder-ful voice and won in her section at Roxby’s Got Talent.”

The Roxby Downs Scouts will

also get involved by selling yiros, while Vern Kruger will be off ering his famous donuts and the Com-bined Churches Group will have soft drinks available for purchase.

Electronic candles donated by Beyond Bank will also be available on the night for $2 each.

e event will begin at 6.30pm before performances start at about 8pm, with all proceeds from the night going towards the local school chaplaincy program.

Chives Restaurant is undergoing a number of changes including the introduction of a new summer

menu and new opening hours. Patrons will be able to access takeaway

from Chives every night of the week, but the dine-in option will only be available from ursdays to Saturdays.

“We will be looking to run specials on the nights we are just off ering takeaway,” said Chives manager Jade Lane.

“Starting from Sunday, November 15, we will be off ering deals like 20 per cent off for any order over $100.

“We will be looking at running our curry menu over our four takeaway nights.”

Ms Lane said the takeaway option had always proved popular and she was hoping this, combined with the dine-in hours, would encourage a boost in customer numbers.

e new summer menu includes fresher and lighter meals in contrast to the heavi-er options that were provided throughout winter.

Popular favourites will remain on the menu, including the same pizzas plus a new

tandoori chicken variety. Chives will still be available for Christ-

mas functions, for which it is off ering either a sit-down dinner or an event in the Sage room with canapes.

Ms Lane said a special Christmas func-

tion menu included glazed ham and stuff ed turkey.

“I encourage people to like our Facebook page (‘Chives, Roxby Downs’),” she said.

“We will have some of our specials on there and our menus will be up there too.”

Local radio station RoxFM’s annual general meeting last week saw new board members appointed and the opportunity to refl ect on

the past 12 months of operations.Chairperson Terry Boylan is continuing on in

his role and is joined by deputy chair Kaye Doyle, treasurer Deb Price and general board members Mike French, Bill Natt and Julie Green.

Mr Boylan told e Monitor the new board would likely have a special meeting before starting its usual monthly gatherings.

He said recruitment was among the board’s main priorities.

“RoxFM is always welcoming volunteers that want to get involved in community radio,” he said.

At the AGM on Monday, November 9, Mr Boy-lan presented certifi cates of appreciation to Jane Gloster and Kirsten Falt for their eff orts.

“We’d like to thank their good work over the last year or so,” he said.

Mr Boylan said RoxFM had been doing “great stuff ” over the past 12 months, including a boost in the number of outside broadcasts.

Anyone interested in getting involved with RoxFM is encouraged to phone 8671 2545.

The Outback Tourers helped Roxby Downs get into the festive spirit with its annual Toy Run on Saturday.

Motorcycles lined the bus stop on Rich-ardson Place on the morning of the run, which had already received several donated items in the weeks leading up to the main event.

Roxby Downs Scouts group members added to the trailer load of gifts on the day with their usual contribution of toys to-wards the cause.

Father Christmas also returned this year to meet with local children before travelling

with the group of riders to Andamooka, where the Country Women’s Association (CWA) branch accepted the donations.

CWA members will help distribute the toys to disadvantaged children across South Australia – particularly the nearby Mid North region.

Outback Tourers member Rob Halmai told e Monitor his group had conducted the Toy Run for more than 15 years.

Mr Halmai said riders were mainly based in Roxby Downs – along with Adelaide and interstate – and had been meeting up since 1986 before offi cially becoming a club in 1994.

“We get together now and then and have rides together,” he said.

“Over the years we’ve been doing a lot of charity stuff .

“We usually do pretty well with the Toy Run. e trailer’s looking pretty good.”

Mr Halmai said he and the other riders were grateful for the mild weather on Sat-urday, when the maximum temperature was just 27C.

is compares with the day of last year’s Toy Run, at which temperatures reached 46C.

While hot weather has presented a chal-lenge at times, the group’s eff orts are all for a worthy cause.

Mr Halmai said the event was about help-ing other communities while also making locals aware of those less fortunate.

Riding club to help bring ‘Santa’ to Roxby Downs

WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

The Roxby Downs Riding Club will be sharing the festive spirit when they

run a cart full of gifts for local children around town later this month.

Stockings fi lled with choco-late will be distributed by ‘San-ta’ and ‘Mrs Claus’, who will be pulled along by Jackson the pony.

ey will visit families at reg-istered stops to give out presents and pose for photographs.

Registrations of interest must be made by 5pm on Monday, November 22, for those wishing to participate.

“ is is the fi rst time we have done something like this, so we have just put the feelers out to see how it goes,” said Roxby Downs Riding Club member Peta Berryman.

“It has been pretty popular so far, and if it works this year we may look to do it again next year and maybe even up the ante and include presents rather than chocolate stockings.”

Riding club members will

dress up and join the proces-sions on Monday, November 30, and December 2 and 4 from either 5.30pm or 6pm, depend-ing on weather conditions.

A route is yet to be designat-ed but is set to include three areas of town and all registered houses.

“We will have to work out how long it is going to take us to get to everyone’s streets,” Ms Berryman said.

“Once we have done it we will advise people via Facebook.”

Ms Berryman said anyone who lived outside of the route

could get in contact with her to organise a meeting spot so that no one misses out.

Stocking deliveries cost $9, photographs with Mr and Mrs Claus are $10 each and ‘lucky dips’ will also be available for $5.

e proceeds will go towards the purchase of riding club equipment and the possibility of erecting a perimeter fence to stop intruders at the stables.

Ms Berryman said the club would explore the possibility of doing something similar with the cart for Easter if this month’s initiative proved successful.

About 100 items of cloth ing changed hands as part of the Clothing

Swap in Roxby Central HQ last Friday.

e Environment Forum’s in-itiative saw around 200 items donated towards the cause.

While men’s and children’s clothing was available, ladies wear appeared to be the most popular on the day.

Leftover items were set to be donated to the Andamooka Opportunity Shop.

Locals honour the fallenWRITTEN BYPATRICK GLOVER

Roxby Downs stopped to remember Australia’s fallen soldiers last Wednesday.

The Roxby Downs Scouts and students from the St Barbara’s Par-ish and Roxby Downs Area schools joined members of the public at the Remembrance Day service.

Returned and Services League president Jack McGuire said he was pleased to see so many locals gather at the war memorial on Richardson Place.

Mr McGuire said it was important for children to take on board the mes-sages of occasions like Remembrance

Day so that they could pass these on to future generations.

He said the privileges we enjoyed every day came at a cost, and Aus-tralians continued to make sacrifi ces for these rights.

“I believe our country is in a state of insurgence,” he said.

“What I mean is there are factions that seek to destroy the tranquillity and the hard fought for lifestyle we enjoy in this great land.

“They are extremists – nothing more than the thugs of evil and per-verters of what is right and just.

“Australians, new and native born, must therefore be vig ilant – let us hold on to what has been gifted to us by the sacrifi ces of few.”

How much do you really know about men’s health?

irteen of the Cowell Elec-tric elite have surrendered their faces to the hairiest month of the year by signing up to the Movember challenge.

e Movember Foundation is a global charity that raises funds for more than 1000 programs addressing prostate and testicu-lar cancer, mental health issues and physical inactivity.

Since 2003, the foundation has raised $685 million.

e idea to support the char-ity was fi rst conceived by Cow-ell Electric civil and concreting supervisor Wayne Kemp.

Mr Kemp has enlisted the help of his co-workers to form a team called e Men of Cowell.

“I’ve actually been meaning to do it for years,” he said.

“It’s something that has al-ways run in my family in the sense of the men in my family don’t prioritise their health or ever go and see a doctor.

“Because of that recently we found out through four gen-erations we have a history of heart conditions that are easily monitored and controlled with a healthy lifestyle and fi tness.

“If my family had been more aware of this condition, we would have been better able to prepare ourselves physical-ly and mentally for when they have occurred.”

Since its inception in 2003,

the Movember Foundation has gone from 30 participants and 30 moustaches to fi ve million – and the ‘mo’ keeps on growing.

One of the foundation’s aims is to create a positive change in men’s health by raising awareness and educating men throughout the year.

“My grandfather is a survivor of hereditary prostate cancer,” Mr Kemp said.

“It was a bit of a shock, be-cause at the same time we found out about the heart con-dition we are also prone to.

“These conditions can be life threatening, but not if you properly monitor and control them, which is why awareness programs and charities such as Movember can be so critical.”

So far The Men of Cowell

have raised $890 and hope to raise more than $3000.

Donation tins have been left at Bianco Construction & In-dustrial Supplies, the Roxby Downs Community Club and the Olympic Dam Football Club.

Supporters can also donate online (http://moteam.co/the-men-of-cowell).

Mr Kemp said he hoped to hold an awards ceremony at the end of the month to recognise the outstanding eff orts within the team and raise extra money for the cause.

e details of this event are yet to be confi rmed, but will be released in the coming weeks.

Roxby Downs Scouts group members took part in the largest scouting event in the world from the com-

fort of the roxbylink library recently. e Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree

on the Internet (JOTA/JOTI) is a world-wide event run on the third weekend of October each year.

Scouts from all over the world use the internet or radio frequencies to commu-nicate with each other while undertaking various activities.

Local Joey and Cub Scouts, along with their group leaders and parents, took part

in the event. ey communicated with sim-ilar groups from interstate and countries including Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Greece, Cyprus and New Zealand.

“JOTA/JOTI is a great event for our rural youth,” said Roxby Downs Scouts leader Scott Gaskin.

“ ey still get to talk to other Joey Mobs, Cub Packs, Scout Troops and Scout groups from all around Australia and around the world – all without leaving Roxby Downs, thanks to the power of the internet, and all under a supervised environment.

“I think it is a great opportunity for these members to see how far scouting is spread all over the world.”

Diff erent activities were made available

to the Scouts on the day, including deci-phering and breaking codes, making Sema-phore fl ags and learning about Morse code and brail.

“A couple of Scouts had conversations using sign language, and many youths have since learned how to sign their name using fi nger spelling,” Mr Gaskin said.

“A few youths also earned their codes and signals badges, which was a great achieve-ment.

“We had a map of the world as well as a map of Australia.

“Each time we found the corresponding country we marked them on the map.  One of our leaders was even having a conversa-tion in another language.”

‘An ideal investment’- Nicole Smart

Nicole Smart always had a sense that Gawler was where she wanted to be, and choosing Woodvale as a place to build her new home

was simply the next step in this process.“Moving to Gawler was always something I

wanted to do,” she said.“When I saw the Woodvale development on

realesate.com.au with its great views, it felt just right – located in the country but only minutes away from the main street.”

Ms Smart recalls popping into the Elders offi ce on Murray Street not long aft er seeing Woodvale online to speak to sales consultant Karen Hughes.

“Karen answered all of my questi ons,” Ms Smart

said. “I took a few days to think things through and saw that it was a great investment oppor-tunity and place to live, with the locati on and all the work being done around the estate being of a high standard.”

‘Big ideas, big allotments’- Danielle Sarti

Danielle Sarti was thrilled to secure a large corner allotment in the exciti ng new Stage 3 release at Woodvale.

“I could not be more excited to have purchased our dream block in the new Woodvale estate,” she said. “The enti re process has been a pleasure from the very beginning.

“Karen was also happy to chat with me about my opti ons.

“Also to be able to have the assistance of the developers prior to committi ng to purchasing the block meant I felt really comfortable going into this purchase.

“The estate has been planned perfectly to keep that country style living whilst creati ng what will hopefully be a close-knit community.

“The opti ons in Woodvale are endless.”Danielle’s large elevated allotment provides an

ideal base for her to design her new dream home

with the benefi t of taking in the expansive views over Gawler.

‘Perfect for all of our needs’- Fiona and Shane Dobbs

Having lived in Gawler for more than 25 years, Fiona and Shane Dobbs were keen to stay in the area.

The couple had built several ti mes previously, but there was something about Woodvale that really att racted them.

“Having built last in the Evanston Park area, we were drawn to moving to Woodvale as the block sizing was perfect for our needs,” said Mr and Mrs Dobbs. “Woodvale off ers a community, while at the same ti me keeping the country feel that we are looking for and importantly providing to access all shopping faciliti es locally.”

‘Room for the whole family’- Jayne and Ben Gerrits

J ayne and Ben Gerrits chose a traditi onal-sized allotment – close to one of the wooded reserves that Woodvale has to off er – for themselves and

their three children.

“Without a doubt, we were aft er a new area that off ered the best spot in Gawler,” Mrs Gerrits said. “We are so excited about beginning building now, and have seen the area change from a rural property into a fi rst-class development.

“Ben and I wanted to be able to get in and out of Gawler quickly and to be able to drop off and pick up the kids from their primary school on ti me.

“We didn’t want to choose something too far out of Gawler, so the locati on was just right for us.

“Gawler South is a great suburb, and with the opportunity to choose a good sized block, we in-stantly knew we wanted to build here.

“We think it’s great that Woodvale has a block that suits everyone.

“I feel like I have my own bit of country living with the added advantage of schools and shops nearby.”

Woodvale is located on Gawler-One Tree Hill Road, Gawler South, and is just two minutes from the Gawler town centre.

A variety of allotment sizes to suit any lifestyle as well as house and land packages from some of Adelaide’s top builders are available now.

A second round of community and sporting stakeholder consultation for the Sport and

Recreation Master Plan will be held next week on Monday, November 23, and Tuesday, November 24.

e Master Plan is being developed as a follow-on to work undertaken by the Sport and Recreation Steering Committee over the last 18 months and seeks to identify and prioritise oppor-tunities for sporting and recreational infrastructure both now and in the future.

Both sessions will be hosted by Mark Band from One Eighty Sport and Lei-sure Solutions and include an overview

of the project as well as an opportunity for participants to share their thoughts and feedback.

A session for sporting and recrea-tional groups who were unable to at-tend the October sessions will be held on Monday, November 23, from 6pm to 7pm in the Council Boardroom.

A session for the general community will be held on Tuesday, November 24, from 10am to 11am in the roxbylink cinema.

And don’t forget – the communi-ty survey for the Master Plan is also available online (www.surveymonkey.com/r/roxbycommunity) or via hard copies from Roxby Council or the rox-bylink library.

The 2015/16 fi re danger season offi cially started on November 1 and will run through until

March 31, 2016. A very handy booklet, Your Guide

to Bushfi re Safety 2015-16, and a small pamphlet, Bushfire Traveller Safe-ty 2015-16, will soon be available at Council as well the roxbylink visitor information centre, Woolworths and BP.

Damien Condon, Council’s Fire Pre-vention Offi cer, advised: “Local compa-nies need to remember on a total fi re ban day that a Schedule 10 permit is required during fi re season when using grinders, welders, oxy set etc.

“ ese schedules can be obtained by contacting either myself or Libby Steer at Council.”

Other frequently asked local ques-tions include using a Weber or barbe-

cue on a total fi re ban day. “A solid, fuel-burning kettle barbe-

cue – one that uses fuel such as wood, charcoal or heat beads – cannot be used in these conditions unless you obtain a Schedule 10 permit from your local Council,” Damien explained.

For more information, contact Dam-ien or Libby at the Council or visit: www.cfs.gov.au

Tablet or smartphone users can download a helpful app from the CFS.

Roxby Council introduced an integrated rubbish collection service in

2012, with each property in Roxby Downs provided a 240L yellow lid bin for recycling and a 140L red lid bin for general household waste.

Each of these bins has a unique serial number identifying the bin to a particular property.

is information is contained in a database and can be ac-cessed at any time.

Council waste contractors BSH have reported some cases of properties missing bins, which is likely due to the current tran-sient nature of the town.

Council wishes to inform res-idents that bins can be traced to a particular property, and if a property is found with a bin that does not belong to the particular

residence, it will be returned to the correct place of residence.

Each residence is also only permitted to have one collection of each bin per pick-up, unless addit ional ar rangement s

are made with BSH Waste Solutions.

Properties missing a red or yellow lid bin are advised to contact BSH Waste Solutions on 8671 1154 to report the issue.

The South Australian Government has established a program to encourage young people living

in regional South Australia to enter the workforce, with an aim of retaining young people in the regions and match them to job and training opportunities in local government.

As part of this program, Roxby Council is pleased to offer one of these traineeships and is now seeking expressions of interest from young people aged between 17 and 24 years in the following areas – Information Technology, Events, Parks and Gar-dens or Business Administration.

To be eligible applicants must be ei-ther unemployed or have never worked in full-time employment.

Applicants must not hold a vocation-

al qualifi cation higher than a Certifi cate III and must not be currently working in local government.

“Working in local government presents many career opportunities and career pathways,” said Michelle Hales, Manager Corporate Strategy and Governance.

“We want young people to stay in Roxby Downs rather than move away for work and study.

“ is traineeship is the perfect plat-form for a young person to contrib-ute to our community while gaining a broad range of skills and experiences.”

e traineeship is for two years, and young people who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to complete the application form, which is available from Council reception or via an email request to: [email protected]

S choolies Week is celebrated each year by school

leavers after completing their fi nal exams.

This year in South Australia the event starts this Friday, November 20.

Historically, Schoo-lies is a week of little sleep, much partying and over-indulgence of alcohol and drugs. It’s no surprise that parents feel nervous about their kids embarking on Schoolies Week.

Now you can fi nd out

everything you need to know to keep them safe while they celebrate.

Take some simple precautions so you can enjoy yourself without putting yourself or your whole future at risk.

Some issues to be aware of include:

• Drink spiking – as-sume that anyone is capable of spiking your drink. A lot of drink spiking is actually done by people you know add-ing more alcohol (as op-posed to drugs) into your drink. Don’t leave your drinks sitting around. If you all go off dancing at once, buy new drinks afterwards. Buy drinks with lids that you have to open yourself. Don’t accept water from any-one, either.

• Sexual assault – this is unfortunately all too common during Schoo-

lies Week. Look out for drink spiking. Going off with a stranger puts you at a high risk, especially if you have been drink-ing, so don’t go to a pri-vate place such as a hotel room with someone you don’t know. Catch a cab at the end of the night rather than walking the streets. Males get sex-ually assaulted during Schoolies Week too, so these tips also apply to guys.

• Brawls – avoid gangs of males who seem to be wandering without pur-pose. Testosterone plus alcohol can sometimes equal a brawl. Violence tends to spread through a crowd, so don’t hang around to watch if a brawl starts.

• Drugs – if you de-cide to take drugs, make sure you tell your friends what kind so they can

give this information to ambulance officers or other medical staff in case of an overdose. Avoid mixing drugs with alcohol or other drugs. Stay with your friends at all times.

• Physical injuries – when outside, even on the beach, keep your shoes on and watch for broken glass and syring-es. Don’t sit down with-out checking behind you.

• Drowning – don’t

drink or take drugs and swim.

• Theft – don’t leave your stuff unattended. Take it in turns to look af-ter everyone’s belongings.

To all of our Roxby ‘schoolies’, congratu-lations on a great ef-fort – you have worked very hard this year and deserve a well-earned break. Wherever you are, stay safe and always be careful.

S ince early October the Multicultural Forum has been running Christmas stocking workshops for kids in need in Port Augusta.

Forum members aimed to complete 170 stockings and were excited to reach their target over many hours of sewing, cutting and decorating.

e hand-made Christmas stockings were received by Families SA in Port Augusta with much gratitude.

e Multicultural Forum could not have reached its goal without the help of the Roxby community and wish to thank some key helpers and community members – Silvie and Alice O’Connor, Dalene Voss-er, Hannah Hill, Vicky Parker, Keren Luke and Mrs Pedersen’s class at RDAS.

Generous sponsors who also gave were Woolworths, Smokemart and the central traders association.

e Multicultural Forum is extremely thankful for all the helpers and sponsors.

Th e spirit of Christmas is alive in Roxby Downs this year!

Chris Burggraaff topped off an impressive season of racing by taking out the Roxby Downs

Sporting Car Club championship at its presentation night on Saturday, November 7.

Burggraaff held off a fast-fi nishing Robbie Sutton and youngster Duncan Atkins, who also had an impressive season.

“I knew it was going to be close be-tween me and Robbie Sutton,” he said.

“The racing has been extremely close all year, and most of the time results came down to one point or a countback.

“I am absolutely stoked – I am now number one in the state and the club.”

As club president, Burggraaff said he was pleased to see so many younger drivers coming up in the classes, with Atkins securing third in the Modifi eds and fi rst-year driver John Dempsey fi n-ishing second in the Street Stocks.

Wayne Dempsey took out fi rst place in the Street Stocks, while Kane Hon-ner fi nished fi rst in the Open class.

James Beenham (Street Stocks), Sutton (Modifi eds) and Logan Hobbs

(Open) completed the fastest lap times in their respective categories.

Non-points-based awards were also handed out on the night, with Ruth Dempsey taking out the main honour, the Ron Hudson Award, for her contri-butions to the club.

Burggraaff said highlights of the sea-son included retaining the Dunn Broth-ers Trophy and the upgrades completed at the track.

The Scott McKay Golf Day is fast approaching and, with high numbers already locked

in, organiser Damon Wilkie is expecting another special event.

is Saturday’s golf day will fo-cus on helping not just the McKay family but also the ree Boys with Duchenne’s (3BWD) fundraiser and the Apex Outback Postie Bike Ride.

“ is year’s event is expected to once again bring the communi-

ty of Roxby Downs together and remember our great mate Scotty McKay,” said Wilkie.

“It will also raise funds for two charities – 3BWD and the Apex Outback Postie Bike Ride – that Tracy McKay picked as her and the family want to give back something to the community after last year’s event.

“It will once again be the biggest golf event of the year, just like last year’s, with the same number of people playing.”

At the time e Monitor went to print on Monday, 128 players across 32 teams had registered to take part

on the day. However, Wilkie said there were still spots left in a few teams that locals could fi ll.

A new hole-in-one prize of a 24-day world trip has caused a lot of interest, and Wilkie said there had been plenty of golfers out practising on the 14th hole, which is where the prize can be won on the day.

Wilkie said there were a num-ber of new sponsors that had come on board this year, along with the new hole-in-one prize donated by WEARX.

Training DownUnder 4U, Roxby AutoPro, Roxby Mensland and the Roxby Downs Community Club are

just some of the new sponsors to join the event this year.

While most of the major spon-sors have remained the same – in-cluding the likes of WEARX, D&D Supplies, the Roxby Downs Golf Club, Convatech and Embroidery 4 U staying on.

Tee off will be at 8am following team registrations at 7.30am, with a bacon-and-egg breakfast to also be supplied on the morning by Ahrens.

A barbecue lunch will be pro-vided by Sodexo before a raffle draw, trophy presentations and a mini auction are held, with a spit

roast dinner to be served up later by D&D Supplies.

Face painting, a clown, a jumping castle and mini golf will be avail-able for the children throughout the day.

Local radio station RoxFM will also be broadcasting live from the event.

Locals can contribute to the raf-fl e and the mini-auction up until Friday.

To keep up to date with what is happening with the event, phone Damon Wilkie (0433 270 202) or visit the Facebook page (‘SCOTT MCKAY GOLF DAY’).

Hornridge v AndamookaHornridge 8/163 (G. Shorrock 50, J. Way 32, Costello 2/17) d Andamooka (T. Patterson 57, J. Way 4/6).

WRITTEN BYPATRICK GLOVER

Hornridge and Andamooka kicked off the 40-over cricket competition last Friday night after the comple-

tion of the Twenty20 competition a week earlier.

Both sides missed out on a fi nals spot in the shorter format and were out to redeem themselves with a win.

Hornridge won the toss and elected to bat fi rst, with the Wanderers managing a total of 8/163 off their 40 overs.

Best with the bat for the men in black and white was Glenn Shorrock with 50 and captain Jamie Way with 32.

Dylan Costello was the pick of the bowl-ers for Andamooka with 2/17.

In reply, Andamooka looked in control with Todd Patterson at the crease before he was dismissed on 57.

Andamooka eventually fell agonisingly close at all out for 160 to hand Hornridge a three-run win.

Patterson was the pick of the batsmen and had looked set to guide his side to victory.

Following on from his 32 with the bat, Way popped up again to take 4/6 as the top bowler for Hornridge.

Olympic Dam d Roxby Miners

In the other match Olympic Dam Cricket Club took on the Miners in a replay of the Twenty20 fi nal from the

week before.Although the format had changed, Satur-

day night’s result remained the same. The Devils won the toss and, with a

strong northerly wind, elected to bowl fi rst. e decision paid immediate dividends

when opening bowler Patrick Glover had the Miners’ Matt Green trapped in front in the fi rst over to have the score 1/0.

Fellow opening batter James Sieburn combined with Paul Trotta to steady the ship before he became Glover’s second vic-tim a few overs later with the score at 26.

Trotta fell soon after with no change in the score, and this brought Sean McIvor and Rhys Allard to the crease.

e two batted calmly and saw their side to drinks at 3/63.

ey came out after drinks looking to up the tempo and succeeded briefl y with boundaries coming for both batsmen.

But when Allard fell to a sharp catch from Brendan Hill at short cover off the bowling of Seb Holbrook, it caused a major collapse.

e Miners then proceeded to lose their fi nal seven wickets – with their fi nal four

batsmen scoring ducks – for just two runs to eventually be all out for 96.

Allard and McIvor were the only two batters to score over double fi gures for the Miners with 30 and 34 respectively.

For the Devils some tight bowling in the middle overs from skippers Rein Geraghty and Holbrook saw them claim three wickets each to be the pick of the bowlers.

In reply OD got off to the worst possible start by losing opener David Kaminski in the fi rst over for a duck bowled by McIvor.

However, this would prove the only stum-bling block for the Devils in their chase and, despite some good bowling from McIvor, Craig Nicholls and Hill guided their side home with the loss of just one wicket.

Hill fi nished just short of a half century with 47 not out while Nicholls fi nished un-beaten on 39.

e pair passed the total in the 24th over with another 16 overs to spare.

McIvor was the only wicket taker for the Miners with fi gures of 1/14 off seven overs.

is week will see a rematch of last year’s 40-over grand fi nal with Hornridge taking on OD on Saturday night.

Andamooka will take on the Miners in the Friday night fi xture, with both sides looking for their fi rst win of the 40-over competition.

So l i d c o m p e t i t o r numbers and a larger-than-anticipated crowd

turned out for the Roxby Desert Motocross Club’s (RDMXC’s) eighth-annual Night Meet on Saturday.

Competitors made the trip from all over the state to be a part of the meet, with riders who had competed at a na-tional level also racing on the night.

“Rider numbers were well up from last year and it was great to see a few classes with full gates of riders,” said RDMXC president Clint Gow-Smith.

“ We a t t r a c t e d m o r e high-profile riders this year than any other, which was re-ally pleasing. We had fi ve to six of the state’s best and a few guys that compete at a national level also.

“That confirms with me that the event has got a lot of respect within the industry, and it’s just so important the community supports it to keep these guys coming back.

“ ere were also a lot of lo-cal riders – both juniors and seniors – competing, which was also great to see.”

Gow-Smith said he had heard “huge praise” for the new course that the club set out for the Night Meet, and he was thrilled with the “nu-merous accolades” the overall event had received.

Adelaide rider Luke Arbon took out fi rst place in the Scott McKay Memorial Feature Race, the night’s main event, ahead of James Booth-Elliot in second and Mitch Norris in third.

Arbon praised the RDMXC and its Night Meet during award presentations at the end of the night.

“ ey always put on a great event,” he said. “It’s always a lot of fun.”

Gow-Smith said a lot of

work had gone in behind the scenes to make the event so successful.

He said the highlight of the night for him was seeing so many diff erent businesses come together to create a “cool event with a genuine country vibe”.

“So many things make an event like this a success,” he said. “It’s not just bikes turn-ing up and selling a few drinks.

“I think this year, more than years gone by, a lot more people were actively involved in con-tributing, which in the big pic-ture just makes co-ordinating the event so much easier.

“Having people take on re-sponsibilities and seeing them through certainly made my life a lot easier this year, and it’s just great that so many locals just want to get involved and help any way they can.”

With the Night Meet organised in a shorter period of time than previous years, Gow-Smith said he was pleased to have the support of major sponsors Mine Tech Engineering, TopLine Resources Pty Ltd, Coates Hire, Red Mulga, Roxby Earthmoving and Paving and MPS.

Gow-Smith said he was also grateful to other local busi-nesses that came on board to help get the event up and running in time, along with local paramedics for being on standby despite no injuries oc-curring on the night.

“Also massive thanks to Tammy Feltus, Heidi Lynch and Bel Swanson for catering, all the extra volunteers on the gates/bars/canteen, the fl aggies and all the guys that helped me at the track leading up to event,” he said.

“Special mention to Matt McDonald, Kurt Murray and Damien Southon for their ded-icated support on track chang-es and prep work leading in.

“I think this year’s night was the most enjoyable. It was hard work but there were plenty of laughs and a really good crew of people working together.”
