Facts about Denmark
Danish decoupling / Towards 2050
Where it all started…
! 1973-74 oil crisis ! 99% dependent on imported energy ! Pollution caused by fossil fuels ! Growing public concerns about
environmental policy
! New policy based on energy efficiency and renewables

! Our economy has grown by more than 70% since 1980
! Our energy consumption has remained the
same - while CO2 emissions have been reduced
! Total water consumption has been reduced
by 40%
Denmark – fossil fuel independent by 2050
March 2012: New Danish energy agreement The agreement is characterised by its ambitious scope, the broad political agreement and long time horizon The target is 100% renewable energy in the energy and transport sectors by 2050 50% reduction target of energy consumption in Existing buildings by 2050 (compared to 2013 level) Coal to be phased out in heating and electricity by 2035
Transition to a green growth economy
What we will have achieved by 2020 > 35% renewable energy in final energy consumption ~ 50% of electricity power to be supplied from wind power > 7.5% reduction in gross energy consumption (compared to 2010 level) 37% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (compared to 1990 level)
Challenges ahead Transition to be undertaken in weak economic climate Large, upfront investments needs for the green Transition How to create solutions that will not weaken the global competitiveness of Danish business and industry

Key drivers in green transition
! Danes ready to pay cost of green transition – 53% clearly in favor acc. to 2014 poll (source: Danish Energy Ass.)
! Unbiased information campaigns on true cost of green transition – and cost of doing nothing (carbon footprint)
! Broad political support for long-term energy agreements – based on public acceptance
! Stick and carrot works!
! Engage and involve the public – example: by law, 20% of ownership offered to local residents
! Remove barriers to green transition
