1.2. Historical background

The site of future LMTA study town at the Olandai street is located at the exclusive place in the context of Vilnius town – at the northern slope of Kalnai park. According to the presumptions of some historians, in early Middle Ages lower part of the Kreivoji castle, was situated here - dense-ly populated, become one of the points of formation of the city of Vilnius. Nevertheless no trace have remained of any settlement ever existed in this place (none comprehensive archeological research has ever been made).

Some information about the existence of a ravine at the territory, which might have served as functional com-munication way, can be found. Ravine is a characteristic element of this part of Vilnius. Due to the complex terrain ravines had major impact to the development of the city.

In accordance to the known iconographic data, urbaniza-tion of the territory started relatively late – at the end of XVIII century, when the street at the slope of The Kalnai park(formerly called Parakas street, currently known

Olandai and T.Kosciuška streets, was paved. The curve of the street was changing during centuries, although main change was made in mid-nineteenth century, when, after setting up barracks and gunpowder warehouses, formerly a public street has become a dead end, used exclusively for access to military site.

Terrain has been smoothened. Currently there are several more or less plain terraces with 3-4 meters of height differ-ences between them.

Such urban situation with slight changes has remained to this day.

Several buildings of XIX-XX century, not included in the List of Vilnius Cultural Heritage, have remained at the site. One of the buildings – chapel situated at the slopes – is preserved and adapted to the needs of designed LMTA complex. Other buildings in the site of little value and due

Shielding-off from busy streets and neighbouting sites. The result is private, quite, safe and attractive pedestrian space dedicated for LMTA needs - a true oasis in city centre.

3.1. Territory plan

Functional convenience, sequence of the construction and correspondence to the common architectural and urban concept of the complex are the three guiding parameters making impact to the solutions of the layout of the territory. Due to these parameters public buildings (hall, manage-ment) are placed closer to Olandai street, faculties – at the outermost place of the complex, students dormitory – close

3.2. Transport

The territory is accessible from 2 provided driveways: the public access for visitors and administrative staff is planned from main Olandu str., whereas the staff and students would reach the campus through S.Vainiunas (Parako)str. Both driveways are also used for service needs. The connection between them is not designed in order to avoid

The demand for parking places according to normative regulations:

Block of halls (public function) – 1 parking place for 10m2 of hall area, approximately 143 places in total.

LMTA (private function) – 1 parking place for 10 students, approximately 100 places in total.

Altogether 243 parking places are required.

It is proposed to establish 160 parking places as followed – 1 parking consisting of 100 places entirely for LMTA needs, additionally 20 parking places along service driveway from S. Vainiunas (Parako) str. side (as well for LMTA needs – for administrative staff and disabled people convenience) and 40-place parking lane along Olandu str. for visitors and guests. In case of shortage of parking places for visitors during the public events, it is proposed to use other parking places along Olandu str.

Structural design & sustainability

5.1. Structural framing

The load bearing construction is the grid of reinforced concrete columns together with reinforced concrete walls of staircases and reinforced concrete slabs.

It is planned to use durable construcions which will be reli-ably resistant in case of emergency of progressive fall, in which one or more elements of load-bearing constructions are damaged.

Foundations. Earthwork The foundations under the building load-bearing construc-tions will be designed according to loads and character of their effect as well as the characteristics of basis for the

5.2. Building systems and sustainability

Designed buildings must match requirements for class
