Patients undergoing chiropractic care received adjustments to the vertebra at top of spine, called the atlas.
Study authors speculate that vertebral subluxation of the atlas restricts blood flow to the brainstem, causing hypertension.

Vertebral subluxations are areas in spine where movement is restricted or bones (vertebrae) are slightly misaligned.
This common condition can be triggered by physical, chemical, or emotional factors.
Doctors of chiropractic treat vertebral subluxations with gentle and safe maneuvers called chiropractic adjustments.

Earlier studies also link chiropractic adjustments to lower blood pressure as quickly as 10 minutes following adjustment.
Research suggests that chiropractic adjustments to the spine of the upper back (thoracic spine) also significantly lower blood pressure.
