Full-time assistant architectArkitek Maju Bina,

Jan 2013 - March 2013Internship

RESEARCHCompleted personal interest projects of Ar. John Koh such as the Reconstructive Documentation of the Banyan Tree Hotel, Ringha. Reconstructed drawings of the vernacular Tibetan farmhouse were drawn in accordance to research, images and sketches provided.

DAILY OPERATIONSInvolvement in day-to-day work within an architects office beginning with documentation. Actively involved in detail and tender drawings under supervision of a senior draftsman. Involvement in site visits and meetings with the architect allowed for observer participation.

COMPE TITIONSParticipation in competition submissions and completion of presentation drawings gave further insight into layout and design. Among the submissions I participated in were :Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) Awards Palazzio Sri Hartamas and Rymba Hills ArcAsia AwardsRymba Hills

BRAND MANAGEMENTInvolved in the rebranding of the company from Arkitek Maju Bina to John Koh Architects. Involved in design and documentation of the logo, name cards, letterheads, envelopes and greeting cards as well as submission for the Architects Directory.

EXHIBITIONSParticipation in Venice Bienalle 2014. Involvement in Concept Design and Development, Model making, Booklet Design as well as communication with the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) and a publishing company.

01. EXPERIMENTAL ARCHITECTURE // STAGE 6 SUSTAINABLE CREMATORY LANDSCAPE

The project is a means towards addressing issues of the changing environment in terms of pollution and death of coral reefs using alternate means and methods. A rich narrative of the elements of Venice have been weaved together to inform the thesis. Using Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities as well as various artworks as a starting point, the project will behave as a synthesis of literature, design thinking and experimentation. The aim is to evoke the magical aspect of walking through the labyrinth that is Venice extending the artificial boundary of historical Venice across the lagoon and onto the regimented San Michelle cemetery.

The sustainable crematory landscape expresses itself architecturally through an evolution that takes place over hundreds and thousands of years, deteriorating and growing with time and blurring the boundary between life and death. Addressing the realms beneath and above the water as well as the point of interface between both mediums, the proposal does not only solve issues pertaining to humanity. It is an all-inclusive design proposal that takes into account other life forms such as marine life beneath the watery Venetian lagoon.

This is the sustainable crematory landscape.1000 years 2000 years 3000 years

In ESMERELDA, City of water, a network of canals and a network of streets span and intersect each other. To go from one place to another you have always the choice between land and boat: and since the shortest distance between two points in Esmerelda is not a straight line but a zigzag that ramifies in tortuous optional routes, the ways that open to each passerby are never two, but many, and they increase further for those who alternate a stretch by boat with one on dry land. And so Esmerelda’s inhabitants are spared the boredom of following the same streets every day. And that is not all: the network of routes is not arranged on one level, but follows instead an up-and-down course of steps, landings, cambered bridges, hanging streets. Combining segments of the various routes, elevated or on ground level, each inhabitant can enjoy every day the pleasure of a new itinerary to reach the same places. The most fixed and calm lives in Esmerelda are spent without any repetition.

02. HIDDEN WATER // STAGE 5.1 WATER PURIFICATION AND DESALINATION FACILITY

Upon study of The Lijnbaan, it is observed that all reticulation is hidden from view. Hidden aspects of the city become a driving factor in this project.

The project is meant to create a stronger relationship between Rotterdam’s inhabitants and the watery world that it sits within. Through the proposal, issues of flood and drought are tackled. There is intention on creating awareness on the changing environment besides creating a vibrant communal space that engages the street as day transitions to night.

Conscious effort has been put into adapting and reusing available space. This carved out space addresses the disruption of traffic flow between various busy streets besides acting as a water collection point. Seats and steps move and float, expanding and contracting the space according to the conditions of the environment. The function of the space changes from a water collection point in times of flood to a collection point of people or outdoor theatre and plaza in times where there is no excess in water.

03. URBAN SPIN CYCLE // STAGE 5.2

The process of doing laundry is often overlooked in the design of urban hubs due to its preconceived ‘dull’ nature which is unfortunate considering its potential in bringing people together. Once a communal affair, the advancement in technology has made it a solitary chore. This scheme intends on glorifying the mundane, highlighting its potential in acting as a communal space. With the intent of reintroducing housing back in the city and creating a mixed use environment, this proposal goes against prior zoning plans by Van Traa which prioritised businesses within the city. The saying ‘It takes a whole village to raise a child’, hints towards the benefits of living within a larger network. Situated in Westersingel the neighbouring park has been engaged and redesigned to address the lack of safe play spaces for young children. Doubling as a learning facility, the scheme is meant to create awareness on the preservation of water and to instill good habits at a young age.

This experimental proposal explores the ideas of passive drying using alternative methods and means. In celebration of Dutch housing design, certain spaces are exposed to the street. Layout of spaces are arranged to allow for views outwards and inwards, further extending the space besides acting as street decoration. Prominence for views were given towards engaging spaces such as living rooms and kitchens rather than bedrooms. The design’s intention was to create a programmatic function that revolves around communal development.

04. KUALA LUMPUR LEARNING INSTITUTE // 3RD YEAR • BSC (HONS) ARCHITECTURE

The reintegration of target users become the focus behind the project. The embodied movement of individuals that initially gather to support each other ultimately disperse from the acupuncture point of the institute into the surrounding community. There is a unique educational direction that is used which addresses the gaps traditional systems fail to answer. The structure and design of the vocational courses focuses on practical application unlike traditional education that focuses on theoretical synthesis. Thus, the knowledge gained in courses are directly accountable to its user and is easily accepted for its relevance in an individuals life.

05. WORK EXPERIENCE // VENICE BIENNALE JOHNKOH ARCHITECTS + ARKITEK MAJU BINA

A house dedicated to an artist is renovated around the main theme of fundamentals and sufficiency. In the current day with increased costs of living, it is suitable that the idea of the generational home is revived. A home should be one that grows with the family according to its size, functions and interests.

Living in a garden was one of the main themes of the project, illustrated in how the project sits lightly on the hilly terrain.

Assisting in a personal interest project of Ar. John Koh, drawings were reconstructed from photos and sketches made during his stay at Banyan Tree Ringha Resort.

Other work included rebranding and graphic design resulting in the production of the Venice Bienalle booklet for Johnkoh Architect, a set of name cards, letterhead as well as greeting cards.
