• Roof - four layers of roofing strippedoff the roof to get back to originalrafters with a new cedar shingle roof(as it had in the Architectural

Recordphotos), and new copper flashingsand gutters installed.

• Brick - all mortar joints were ground down and redone in accordance withacceptable national landmark standards.

• Chimneys - all had to be rebuilt in order to restore functionality to thefour existing fireplaces and one new fireplace. (The original brick

fromthe chimneys was used for the columns of the new loggia addition, withnew brick used on the rebuilt chimneys, making the loggia

addition looklike it has always been there.).

• Exterior painted woodwork - all was removed from the house, repairedwherever possible or replaced with exact replicas where woodwork

was beyondrepair, then all repainted. (New latticework and soffits were included in theadditions that are exact replicas of those same details

on the existing home.)

I N T E R I O R E L E M E N T S

• The exquisite antique woodwork on all trim and paneling was hand-strippedand restored to its original luster throughout the home. All

floors werestripped of carpet, repaired where required, sanded and refinished. All doorswere also stripped. Rare antique woods restored

include mahogany,quarter-sawn oak, butternut, pegged oak and pine.

• All walls and ceilings were taken down to the wire mesh and then re-plastered,so that you have virtually new walls, with the old world feel

you can't get fromdrywall. Even the groin vault in the foyer's barrel ceiling had to be recreated,as its lines were no longer straight.

• The living room had a faux front and small fireplace which were removed toreveal the original brick facing and outlines of the much larger

fireplace andhearth that have been rebuilt in the room today. The beams in the ceiling are replicas of those called for in Shaw's original

plans for the room, and the custom woodwork tying the beams into the mantel were outlined by a "ghost" visible on the plaster beneath the

removed drywall.

• The family room was gutted and restored with large windowed walls to recreatean originally-designed "indoor/outdoor" room that

links the expansive front lawn with the sculpted gardens, terraced patios and swimming pool in the back yard. By replicating arches that

had been hidden behind soffits and by incorporating other exterior architectural detail into the custom paneling, this oversatile room

harmoniouslyintegrates with the outdoorliving space through slidingglass doors to offer exceptionalentertainment of family andguests in

a serene setting. Allthe moldings and paneling inthis renovated family roomreplicate the detail in theoriginal paneling in the library.The

travertine flooring, whichcontains in-floor heating, servesas "patio flooring" for this"indoor/outdoor" room.

H I S T O R Y

This exceptional example of Shaw's country homes was designed in 1908 as a Georgian Revival brick home, with English and American Arts &

Crafts movements reflected throughout the interior. The home was showcased in The Architectural Record in 1912.

Howard Van Doren Shaw was an accomplished commercial and residential architect in the late 1800s through the early 1920s. His residential

work encompassed over 60 homes in Evanston, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Forest and Lake Bluff for the Chicago-

area's most influential citizens. Shaw's homes are known to be traditional and elegant, yet comfortable, with European-influenced settings for

his clients' sophisticated lives, and reflecting their graciousness and culture.

I N S P I R A T I O N

The inspiration for the additions and exterior rooms was Shaw's own work on his other country homes, where the L-shape of the house was

used to form two walls of the outdoor living areas of the home.

The original home, as documented in the Architectural Record in 1912, and Shaw's original drawings were the inspiration for interior

restoration and renovation work. Jens Jensen's gardens were the inspiration for much of the landscaping and grounds layout. (Jens Jensen and

Howard Van Doren Shaw collaborated often on client projects.)

R E S T O R A T I O N H I G H L I G H T S

All surfaces of the home, interior and exterior, and most

of what lies between the interior and exterior, have

been renovated to the level of a brand-new construction

home or better. Many of the elements that were restored

(customized plaster walls and ceilings, radiant heating)

are scarcely found in new construction.
