Usually Phase 4 Trials are done in the United States and are required just before FDA approval,” says Dr Julian Theng, Medical Director of the Eagle Eye Centre. “We are delighted that we had the opportunity to conduct these trials here in Singapore. I believe that through conducting these trials in Singapore, on Asian eyes, allows us to provide better treatment to patients in Asia.” The announcement of the results of the Phase 4 Clinical Trials for the Aspheric Restor +3 Lenses coincide with the launch of Mandarin edition of “A Long-Sighted Look at Presbyopia (老花眼面面观),” which is written by Dr Theng. Book on Eye-Care

Asia‟s Cataract and Presbyopia (Lau Hua Yan 老花眼) patients can now look forward to

receiving much better treatment thanks to the latest designed multi-focal lenses, which

were revealed to the Singapore public on the 15th

of October 2008 at the Eagle Eye

Centre in Mount Alvernia Hospital, Singapore.

The new Aspheric Restor +3.00 lenses have been undergoing Phase 4 Clinical Trials at

the Eagle Eye Centre. The centre, which is the only centre in South East Asia to conduct

the trial for these lenses, is also the first centre in the region to implant the lenses and it

has reported promising results.

“Usually Phase 4 Trials are done in the United States and are required just before FDA

approval,” says Dr Julian Theng, Medical Director of the Eagle Eye Centre. “We are

delighted that we had the opportunity to conduct these trials here in Singapore. I believe

that through conducting these trials in Singapore, on Asian eyes, allows us to provide

better treatment to patients in Asia.”

The announcement of the results of the Phase 4 Clinical Trials for the Aspheric Restor +3

Lenses coincide with the launch of Mandarin edition of “A Long-Sighted Look at

Presbyopia (老花眼面面观),” which is written by Dr Theng.

He says, “I believe that better eye-care and health care is a combination of having the

right technology and the right education. While it‟s important for the medical profession

and industry to provide patients with the latest technology like these lenses, we also have

to provide knowledge about eye-care to the public. The book is a culmination of my

experiences in treating presbyopia and other eye ailments and provides patients with the

knowledge of how to look after their eyes. The English edition was launched two-years

ago and I like to think it has helped to equip the public with better knowledge. It‟s now

time to reach out to a larger audience in Singapore and beyond and that‟s why I decided

to launch the Mandarin edition along with announcement of the Phase 4 Clinical Trial

results.”

Proceeds from the English edition of the book were donated to the Straits Times Pocket

Money Fund, and Dr Theng presented a cheque for $13,738.50 to Mr Peter Khoo,

Chairman of The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund at the launch of the Mandarin edition.

The Mandarin edition of the book will be distributed by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH)

and it will be available in all major bookstores. Dr Theng will be donating the proceeds

of his book to The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund.

Dr Theng, the Medical Director, of the Eagle Eye Centre and Consultant at the Singapore

National Eye Centre, is one of Singapore‟s leading eye-specialist and has spent the last

few years treating patients who suffer from cataracts and presbyopia with multifocal

implants. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in the field of multifocal implants

in Singapore and he has given talks and teaching courses for ophthalmologists on such

implants both regionally and in Singapore.

Mr Kuntal Joshi, General Manager of Alcon Singapore and Regional Director for Alcon

Southeast Asia said, “Julian is a gifted surgeon with a lot of talent. More importantly,

he‟s passionate about helping people see again. His dedication to helping people made

him an ideal choice to conduct these trials and I congratulate him and his team for the

launch of the Mandarin edition of „A Long Sighted Look at Presbyopia.‟”

Presbyopia, a condition that involves the hardening of the lens and blurring of vision, also

known as „Lau Hua Yan 老花眼,‟ usually affects those over forty-years of age. The Eagle
