Q Academy Prospectus Version 14.1 Modifi ed 16.05.2014

Welcome to Q Academy

Thank you for considering Q Academy as part of your plan to become a nationally qualifi ed Remedial Massage Therapist.

We understand that embarking on a new career is a major decision and there may be many things that you would like to know before you start, including:

• What is it like working as a massage therapist? • What career options are there? • Can I make a good living from it? • What qualifi cations do I need to be competitive and employable? • How much does it cost?• Where can I get the best training and qualifi cations to reach my goals?

On the following pages we’ve provided as much information as we can, but no document can anticipate every question. Each person has a unique set of circumstances and requirements, so we always recommend talking to one of our Career Specialists to get a full understanding of your options and choices.

If you’re unfamiliar with the massage industry, the fi rst step is to identify which specialisation most appeals to you. We can help you with that. The major specialisations are remedial massage, sports massage, infant and maternity massage, resort and day spa, corporate and mobile massage.

The second step is to plan your ideal training program. We offer a wide range of industry short courses, such as Refl exology and Sports Taping, that will expand your massage skills and help towards your chosen specialisation. Most of our 1 or 2-day short courses do not require the Certifi cate IV in Massage as a prerequisite and may be completed while you’re studying.

With our advanced learning techniques you’ll be surprised with how much fun we have in class and how quickly and easily you learn. Forget boring lectures, we make learning hands-on and interactive!

Our objective is for you to have a new career in the massage industry that you absolutely love. We don’t just teach you how to massage – we actively support you every step of the way. There is a big difference! To do this we will help you choose your preferred career path, provide you with the most up to date nationally recognised training courses and then, once you have graduated, we offer our unique and totally free “Student for Life” support program.

Our “Student for Life” program means that as a Q Academy graduate*, you can come back and get help at any time. You can even re-sit any part of your course again, for free, and always keep your skills up to date. This includes your First Aid, saving you thousands of dollars during your career. We can also help you register with the key industry association the AAMT, apply for professional indemnity insurance, and as a qualifi ed Remedial Massage Therapist, help you apply for your health care provider numbers.

Finally, we can help you fi nd employment. We list almost all the massage positions advertised in Queensland on our web site and frequently host industry nights with local employers. You can access and receive all that information as part of our “Student for Life” support services. Approximately 80% of the 100 plus massage positions currently being advertised in Queensland require the Diploma of Remedial Massage [HLT50307] qualifi cation that we deliver.

Our goal is to help you get started on the right career path in massage and support you throughout your career. That, together with having fun whilst learning, is what our students say makes us so unique.

We hope you will fi nd this prospectus helpful and please feel free to call us on 1300 20 40 80 if you would like any further information, or to meet the team and see your campus. We look forward to welcoming you to one of Australia’s premier massage colleges.

A little history...10 years ago the Certifi cate IV in Massage was the benchmark qualifi cation to have as a working massage therapist. While the Diploma of Remedial Massage existed in varying forms it was not needed by most clinics. Step forward 10 years and things have changed!

The Diploma is now needed to get employment in most clinics. Employers want a knowledgeable therapist who can better help their clients and offer access to health fund rebates for their clients.

Will the same happen in years to come for the Diploma of Remedial Massage? Only time will tell. However you have the unique ability to step into the future now with a qualifi cation that will set you apart from most therapists.

KnowledgeThis is one of the biggest reasons for a lot of the successful, self driven therapists who undertake further study. The development of skills and knowledge drives a lot of therapists to continue training and improving the service they offer their clients. With the Advanced Diploma you will learn a lot of great new skills, helping to understand what is wrong with your client and how it can be treated.

Employability or Business Success

With most therapists only having the Diploma you will set yourself apart from the crowd.

Want the fl exibility and earning potential of working for yourself. This will increase your client base and earning potential. The results that your clients achieve will keep them as a loyal client and telling their friends!

Diverse Client BaseThis qualifi cation bridges the gap between a Remedial Massage Therapist and Physiotherapist. You will learn the skills of rehabilitation as outlined in the subject description. This means you will have a wider range of clients you can help.

Mobile and Corporate MassageIn this fast-paced world, clients may not always have the time or opportunity to visit a massage clinic, so why not go to them! A mobile massage business only needs a car and a table. Corporate massage is very popular in the major metropolitan areas with large numbers of offi ce complexes, as well as hotels. Whether it is to keep their employees happy and stress free, or to entice employees into a competitive market, many employers contract therapists to come to their workplace to give their team a 15 to 20 minute seated ‘Stress Buster’ massage treatment. Many people working in the corporate environment have issues with their posture from long hours behind a desk, sometimes in quite stressful environments. This is primarily a daytime operation where you will have a number of corporate clients in your location.

Day Spas and Relaxation MassagePeople are becoming increasingly interested in looking after themselves, not only with regards to their physical health but also their mental and emotional well-being. What better way to achieve this than with relaxation massage? The opportunities to work within this area of the industry are endless.

You can work in a holiday resort or day spa, either locally or abroad. You may fi nd employment in many exotic locations, ranging from tropical havens to overseas snowfi elds, or even on a cruise ship. There are also many opportunities to set up your own practice; all you need is a room and a table.

Your industry specialisation is achieved through incorporating our advanced short courses into your training program.

We currently provide the following short courses, please check our web site for the most current information:

Q Academy gave me the knowledge and confi dence to get out there into the business sector and open a very successful business in massage.

On Campus Advanced Learning

So what are “Advanced Learning Techniques?”

Remember back to school, college or university, when the teacher stood at the front of the room and just talked for hours on end and you nearly fell asleep? We don’t do that!

To help you absorb as much as you possible, we have regular brain breaks to get you up and moving and to stay alert. Brain breaks are a great way to interact with other students and staff, and have fun learning!

Have you ever wondered why you fi nd it diffi cult to recall the headline on yesterday’s paper, yet if you hear a song that your haven’t heard for years, the words come fl ooding back as soon as it starts?

Our philosophy is that learning should be made fun, because if you’re laughing you’re listening, and if you’re listening you’re learning!

People learn in different ways; some are visual learners who remember pictures and create linked images in their mind, some people are auditory learners who prefer to listen and read, and the kinaesthetic learners love to get physically involved and just give things a go.

Our coaches utilise ALL of these learning styles throughout the course, to teach everything from remembering the names of your classmates, to the elements that comprise each living cell in the human body.

At the start of your massage course you learn about effective communication skills, how to build great relationships, and how to identify the different behaviours and characteristics that people exhibit. We continue to encourage you to practice your advanced communication techniques every day, because making people feel special, important and worthwhile is vital to the development of successful relationships and ultimately a great business.

After graduating from one of our massage schools, it is often the fun kinaesthetic environment our students remember most. Our blindfolded massage class is always a favourite.

If you like fun, laughter and a hands-on approach to learning, you’re going to love it at Q Academy.

To laugh is to listen, which is to learn!

Q Academy’s Advanced (FUN) Learning Techniques are fundamental to the delivery of our Certifi cate IV in Massage Therapy Practice [HLT40312] and Diploma of Remedial Massage [HLT50307] courses.

6. How do you teach the practical components of the massage courses online program? All the practical skills are demonstrated by our lecturers in great detail through DVD video sessions showing various views of the techniques as well as through detail slides in the supporting course material & manuals coupled with online assessments and quizzes.
