Mi-Light Mission Statement

Mi-Light serves as the focal point for the photonics industry in Michigan by bringing together professionals from companies, academia and organizations to mutually support and promote photonics-related business.

Mi-Light’s mission is to promote and grow our internationally-recognized talent pool and leverage our strong industrial and academic capabilities in order to expand the (photonics) industry, attract funding and stimulate innovation in Michigan.

Mission and Goals

• “Mi-Lights Messaging Committee’s mission is to oversee

communications and branding to ensure that Mi-Light is

properly represented to the world.”

– Identify, prioritize and focus communications and match

them to the states objectives for Mi-Light

– Compile a library of messages that can be used by Mi-

Light members when communicating benefits of

Michigan’s photonics community

– The Messaging committee will work in close

collaboration with other Mi-Light committees

implementation), e-mail accounts and e-mail groups,

collaborative applications, blog / bulletin board (LinkedIn),

contact management services (SalesForce), online shared

storage (Copy/Barracuda, Box.com, Dropbox), etc. May include

online SQL style database for Supply Chain Management, if

needed.

OSA/OIDA Cluster Membership

– Mi-Light is a Member!

Here are the benefits Mi-Light can pass through to our members:

• Discounted 6 month membership for Mi-Light members – half the regular rate for the appropriate tier plus an additional 20% off;

• OIDA’s Tom Hausken will make one annual trip to give a talk to your members on a topic of interest – members may also receive a copy of his presentation if they are interested; date around July 21 (Members Meeting?)

• Mi-Light may send an abbreviated Market Update Report once or twice annually to your membership. An example is attached (but we would be sending an abbreviated version – not the full report). (See example)

(Also can do webinars for Members –cost is $3k, needs 8 weeks lead time, 1/month now, but plans to increase to 2/month)

Michigan Advanced Technician Training MAT2 Program

• MEDC initiative modeled after German apprenticeship program, competency based

• First cohort of students started in fall 2013 in Mechatronics

• Program expanding to 3 areas in fall 2014 - Mechatronics, Product Design, and Information

Technology

• Photonics initially proposed for fall 2014, under consideration for fall 2015

• Program combines studies with work at the company

• Year 1 - 4 study periods (7 weeks each), 2 work periods (9 weeks each)



• Cost of 3-year program is ~$60,000 out of which tuition is about 1/4 and the rest are wages and

stipends to students

• All participating employers and colleges agree to same wages and tuition

• Grads commit to minimum 2 years of work for the company after completing program


Short-Term Training Courses - Baker

College of Flint

• Topics: fundamentals of optics, photonics, lasers or

customized content

• Duration: from 1-day to 1-week or several weeks if needed

• Flexible schedule: day, evening, weekday or Saturday

classes

• Option of remote delivery through Webex, coupled with on-

site lab sessions
