14th Korea National Jamboree
3 - 9 August 2016
Nakdonggang Riverside, Dalseong-gun, Daegu-city, Korea
A contingent of 29 participants and 4 adult leaders led by Mr Tan
Kay Kerng attended the 14th National Korea Jamboree at Daegu
city, Korea. The theme ‘Building Scout’s Dream’ encouraged the
youth to build their dreams
The Singapore Scout Foundation subsidised four deserving
scouts who attended the Jamboree:
Muhammed Faiz, 14, a Secondary 2 scout from Tanjong Katong
Secondary School reported, “I am happy to meet people from
different countries and find out more about their culture. I have
learnt new things from the Koreans that we did not learn in
school, such as new scouting skills from pitching a tent to setting
up a campsite. I have also tried new food such as ginseng chicken.
I hope that more will benefit from the Scout Foundation subsidies
to attend future Jamborees and I am looking forward to more
international scouting activities.”

Another Scout, Lim Yi Leo, 16, a Year 4 scout from River
Valley High School said, “Although there were language
barriers, I was still able to communicate with scouts from other
countries and gain insights about their cultures. I was able to
make new friends and have stayed in contact with them,
including one from Jeju Island and another from Seoul.
I have also made a new friend from Indonesia. It happened
during the closing ceremony. I turned around and she waved at
me. We exchanged gifts and were friends since. In the evening,
we went around the various campsites to watch performances
and took pictures together.
The subsidies really helped me a lot to attend the Jamboree. I
would not have gotten the chance to attend the Jamboree if not
for the financial assistance. I thank the Singapore Scout
Foundation for the subsidies.”

President’s Scout Award
On Wednesday, 14 December 2016, fifteen Venture Scouts and seventeen Girl Guides were conferred the
President’s Scout Award and President’s Guide Award respectively by President Tony Tan Keng Yam.
The award ceremony was held at the Istana.
Lau Wai Soong, a PSA recipient from Hwa Chong Institution wrote, “I am extremely grateful to have
received this award, and this only marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of scouting. We should always
strive to live outside our comfort zones to improve ourselves continually and to have a more fulfilling
life”.
Natasha Sarita Vincent, a PSA recipient from Stallion Scout Group (Open) shared, “I am humbled to
receive the prestigious President's Scout Award. In my view, the PSA is not just an award, but also a
culmination of all my experiences thus far as a scout. It signifies that challenges can be overcome, if one
commits his or her mind and spirit to it. As the only female PSA awardee this year, I hope to use the award
as a testament that girls are equally as capable as boys. I accept the award as a form of empowerment and
hope for other aspiring female scouts in Singapore.”

Singapore Cuboree & Camp Possible
The Singapore Cuboree and Second Camp Possible was
held at the MOE Jalan Bahtera Adventure Centre from
26 to 29 Nov. 2016, in conjunction with the celebrations
of 100th year Cub Scouting in Singapore. 235 Cub
Scouts, 36 Scouts from Special Education Schools and
10 youths with special needs, attended the camp that ran
alongside the 9th National Patrol Camp.
The participants interacted and engaged with one
another, enhancing their self-awareness and confidence.
They prepared for future-ready citizenry through
participating in empowering activities such as outdoor
challenge, role playing at KidZania, NPC Open House
and Values-In-Action (VIA).
The VIA boost the confidence of the youths with special
needs as they were able to contribute to the community
with the new skills that they learnt at the camp. In
partnership with Public Health Council (PHC), the
Scouts and youths with special needs served as Anti-
littering advocates. Their primary duties were to educate
and advise the public to discard their waste or rubbish
into the proper designated bins.

Appeal for Donation to the SSA Building Fund
We are appealing to you to make a difference to the scouting movement in Singapore - by making a
contribution for the expansion and retrofitting of the Singapore Scout Association HQ building at 1
Bishan Street 12.
The Singapore Scout Association has an illustrious history of more than 100 years of scouting in
Singapore. It is part of a word-wide scouting movement dedicated to the holistic development of youth
by myriad forms of indoor and outdoor activities for the purpose of developing youth into good,
responsible and reliable individuals. Since the establishment of the Association, generations of youth
had participated in scouting activities, which have transformed them into able, committed and dedicated
leaders in all segments of society. In the context of an ever-changing ethos of a multi-racial and multi-
religious Singapore, scouting activities are constantly evolving in order to maintain their relevance to
the prevailing times and to foster international understanding and harmony. There are now more than
200 scout units in Singapore – located in the schools and in the larger community.
To benefit the community at large, the Association is expanding its range of activities to further reach
out to the larger community, including youth who have not had the benefit of scouting experience and
the less privileged members of the society. Towards that end, the Association has established an outdoor
education leadership centre to organize camps for school children as part of their school curriculum.
The Association has also been organizing camps regularly for many years for the physically challenged
children along with camps for Scouts. Later this year, the Association, in collaboration with the
Singapore Kindness Movement, will launch a programme to promote “doing at least a good deed a day”
within the family and the community.
Construction of the HQ building was completed more than 20 years ago. Plans are now afoot to convert
the building into a hub for activities for youth and the larger community. Not only will the general
public have easy access to the HQ building, the capacity of the building will be increased from 1,920
to 2,963 square metres. There will be a new rock-climbing wall, a new reception area cum visitor’s
lounge, more office space, more training space with better equipped training aids, an expanded Scouting
heritage gallery, and a new café, roof terrace with BBQ pits. An artist’s impression of the expanded
and retrofitted HQ building is featured herein.
The expansion and retrofitting works will commence in mid-2017 and will be completed by end 2018.
The cost of the works is about $5 million. All donations towards the costs would be eligible for 250%
tax deduction. We hope that you would make a donation to realise the objectives of the Association to
benefit the youth and community at large.
