Now, as director of Tintype, she is offering a picture show of a different sort, a screening of a series of short films back- projected onto the window of her contemporary art gallery in Islington. Essex Road III is eight short films by artists Susan Collins, Lynne Marsh, Jennet Thomas, Amikam Toren, John Walter, Alice May Williams, Joby Williamson, and Andrea Luka Zimmerman. Teresa says: “It’s very much to do with Essex Road, the street, which I love being able to look onto as I’m working. That’s in fact how the whole idea started.” The brief to the artists was to provide a film of about five minutes “that in some way relates to Essex Road”. As the title suggests, the project is now in its third year, and the daily screenings for passers-by run on a loop, from dusk until midnight, and will continue until January 14. Tintype was formerly in Clerkenwell before moving to its present location three years ago. It currently represents 11 artists and mounts eight exhibitions a year, from paintings and prints to “sculptural installations”, performance, special events and more. Teresa stresses: “We are a contemporary art gallery, we are not a cinema”, but while the films are running, the gallery itself is in darkness. She adds: “I’ve had some lovely dialogues with people who, when I’ve just popped out, are watching the films and just start chatting. “There have been quite a few people who have lived in this area a long time, so they tell me their old stories and vignettes, which is nice.” The artists have produced very different works with wide-ranging subject matter. There’s “a search for wildlife in Essex Road… from a stuffed rabbit, ornamental horses, and deer paintings, to pet dogs and pigeons”; a juxtaposition of a helicopter’s rotating blades and a young man pacing up and down a section of the road swinging a key ring on his finger; themes of resurrection, entertainment and death, inspired by the Art Deco cinema, once a bingo hall; a personal story of love lost on Essex Road “thwarted by the excessively efficient 38 bus service”; and the less personal examination of the local shops “…an assortment of independent businesses that clamour for your glance, your attention and your engagement.”. As they say, watch this space. Arts Council England and Islington’s Local Initiatives Fund are supporting Tintype with the project.
