A Letter From Your Representative
Texas ICES Sept 2014
Sept 2014
Dear Texas ICES Members,
It was such a pleasure seeing so many of you at the Convention
in Albuquerque. We proved just how strong ICES is in Texas.
We had a delegation of 70+ in attendance, and I can assure you
everyone knew “TEXAS WAS IN THE HOUSE.”
Congratulations to Helen Osteen who received the well de-
served Wilbur Brand Award. This is an award to recognize and
honor people who have given exceptional service to ICES.
Congratulations to Carley King who was elected Vice President
of ICES for 2014-15. She also continues to serve as Representa-
tive Liaison and is a member of several committees.
Congratulations Sharon Briggs (3rd year on the Board) ICES
Chairman of Property and Record Management (Historical)
and Recording Secretary.
Congratulations Charlotte Hare for being one of 29 recipients
of a $250 Hank and Betty Jo Steinman Second Chance Award.
Team Texas ( Yvette Humbert, Cinthya Rommriel, and Suzy
Zimmermann) took home 3rd place in the Live Team Cake
Challenge. It was truly a fun experience and all who partici-
pated definitely learned a lot. Who’s up to be a member of Team
Texas for 2015 Omaha Convention (the 40th Anniversary of
ICES)?
Before we focus on 2015, Texas ICES still has 2 great events this
year. Area II DOS in Tyler on October 5 and Area III “A Day of
Hands-On Fun with Susan Carberry and Peggy Tucker” on
November 9. More details in this newsletter or visit
www.TexasICES.org. I hope to see you there!
Decorate On,

Being a home baker in NY, stor-
age space is limited. After a few
years of going through ziploc
filled drawers I decided to Take
full advantage of back to school
sales And revamp my silicone
mold/onlay storage. All you need
is a large zippered binder and
some heavy duty sheet protectors
and you can store and organize
all your small
lace/impression/letter molds effi-
ciently. :) enjoy!

These great tips are from Texas ICES member Debra Lawson…
To clean several greasy tips at a time boil in soapy water on the stove top
or heat in soapy water in the microwave with a high ratio of water to metal tips
in a glass bowl in the microwave.
I always carry a box of babywipes to sugar art classes.
Makes it easy to keep my hands less sticky between washings.
Buttercream (made with shortening, colored or uncolored), fondant and
gumpaste can all be frozen.
Re-use styrofoam dummies by soaking in hot water to remove fondant
or simply place fondant covered dummy in dishwasher!!

More Tips & Tricks from our CT ICES friends...caring & sharing
If your hands get stained with food colors, squirt with Windex before washing them;
the color will come right off! Diane Burke, CT
A metal seam gauge, used for sewing with an adjustable arrow, is handy for measuring
the height dowels should be in tiered cakes. Place the gauge in the cake, bring the arrow
down level with the icing, remove and place it next to dowel to mark it. Cut all dowels
this same length. Carolyn Mathewson, CT
When decorating cake with floral designs, a simple filler is to use “coil vines”. With ei-
ther brown or green buttercream and tip #1, place the end of the tip under a leaf or
flower on your cake. Exert a lot of pressure on the bag of frosting, pulling away from
the leaf or flower into the open area of the cake you want to fill. The frosting will be
forced out of the bag quickly enough through the very thin opening causing a “coiling’ ef-
fect. Thus, your vines!, Beth Lee Spinner, CT

Sugar Art Gallery
From Beginners to Professionals,
everyone is invited to share their creations in the Sugar Art Gallery.

with hot summers and no dry season. The month of August is characterized by gradually fal-
ling daily high temperatures, with daily highs around 85°F throughout the month, exceeding

ICES is more than a Newsletter…
ICES is more than a Convention…
ICES is more than a DOS…
ICES is a network of Sugar Friends who embody the mission to
preserve, advance and encourage exploration of the sugar arts.
ICES promotes and provides opportunities for continuing
education, development of future sugar artists, and enjoyment
of the art form in a caring and sharing environment.
